Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) was called out on social media for sharing an AI rendering purporting to be the U.S. airman who was rescued from Iran just before midnight Saturday.

A U.S. F-15 was shot down over Iran on Friday. Although both airmen successfully ejected, only one was rescued immediately. After a massive search effort both by Iran and the U.S., Donald Trump announced the successful rescue of the second airman on Truth Social.

Later Sunday, Abbott shared the image of what looks to be a U.S. service member holding an American flag and surrounded by a smiling rescue team. The original post says, “Here is the photo of the honorable Colonel being rescued yesterday—God bless him— our soldiers are ALL doing God’s work! HAPPY EASTER!”

These idiots believe anything.

Greg Abbott is unamerican because he refuses to stand for the national anthem. I also hear he is a little piss baby.

Remember when doing something like this would totally get you fired and your constituents would never believe you about anything ever again?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 4 hours ago

It reflects the truth they want, so that's good enough.

these things don't happen in developed countries

[–] stoicmaverick@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not saying this is good, but which one? Name ANY country, and I'll tell you something insane they're doing right now. We just suck more than average right now with no signs of improvement in the near future.

[–] BouteilleBrune@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

haha I'm not saying all other places are perfect, simply that the US isn't a developed country

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 37 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

So they definitely did not rescue him if they’re sharing AI photo… right?

[–] stoicmaverick@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Iran is claiming the didn't.

Here's the details I catch if I really look:

Backwards flag patch on chest (flag patch should only have the stars at the top right when worn on the right shoulder, if that's even a thing), flag patch crooked on upper arm when it should be perpendicular to the arm.

And from a broader point of view, why would an ejected pilot be carrying a full-size American flag?

Anybody see anything else wrong?

Those smiles are all really cringey to me. Not proof of AI but I seriously doubt highly trained special ops soldiers would sport such shit-eating grins while the operation is still underway. Real rescuers would celebrate only when safely back on the ground in friendly territory.

Looks like the picture is from the helicopter or even a ship after rescue judging by the background. I mean its does not seem to be taken outdoors. So presumably someone gave it to him. That being said it does not correct the patch thing but I would have to trust other peoples things on that. Although that flag on the gul jus to the my left of him seems glaringly wrong. I mean even if the soldier put it on in a hurry like that there is so much time during rescue im sure someone would rib him about it. I guess you can take the super unlikely it feel off just a bit before and he quicly popped it back on. I mean that would be assuming its velcro and not sewn on. I don't know how those things are. I would think we would hear from the family eventually if it had not happened. Do journalists no longer run and do those kind of checks anymore I mean in the past they would be high tailing it to get that kind of confirmation.

Maybe if that lazy God character got off His ass and did His own work, we wouldn't have these problems.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 16 points 8 hours ago

Conservative authoritarian lying fuck lies. Details at 6.

[–] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world 12 points 9 hours ago

Doesn’t Texas’ Christian God™️ disapprove of outright lying?

Where are the religious zealots when they act against THEFAITH?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 10 points 9 hours ago

Generating shitty propaganda, another reason we need AI.

[–] lazynooblet@lazysoci.al 2 points 6 hours ago

If that is AI then it's now beyond my abilities to detect easily.

We are fucked.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

And all of his supporters are unaware and don't care

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 4 points 7 hours ago

It's a post-truth world for many people and maybe always has been. Feelings are the only things that matter. The "facts don't care about your feelings" line was, as always, projection.
