Biometrics, I already do, via my passport. Digital passports, maybe. I don't have a smartphone, so if the government wants me to have one for all kinds of digital shit, they'd better get me one.

[–] etchinghillside@reddthat.com 16 points 3 days ago

Am already in a few systems. I think when I have to start handing over unlocked devices I have issues.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 days ago

As a valid work visa holder in multiple countries, they already have my biometrics as they were a part of the visa process. Having the same data in my passport just speeds things up.

As long as I can enter/exit without showing more than my passport, I'm OK with it. My JD Vance memes stay locked the fuck down.

Biometrics are already forced, unfortunately. No idea what "digital passports" are. What are they?

I just wish we got rid of passports altogether. Borders are dumb, IMO.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Digital passports would be like forcing you to download an app on your phone because they wanna "save paper" or something...

[–] mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

would just travel with a burner

How would you better define and manage the different zones of consolidated, shared resource management and ensure no fair-weather cheats skim benefits from each instead of committed to one and paying their part? No no, I'm curious.

What's this "still do traveling"?

I've never been able to afford to travel, so in that regard nothing will change.

But, living off-grid as much as possible sounds appealing. I don't know about the reality, though. Ironically, being an introvert would make it harder to live off-grid, methinks.

Inb4 they start doing internal checkpoints...

ahem China ahem

(You have to present your ID before being able to purchase long distance train tickets...)

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Well, I suppose if they put a checkpoint between here and the grocery store...

I haven't been more than 30 miles from my house in 15 years. I'd love to, but I can't really.

[–] Luminous5481@anarchist.nexus 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

that's a throwback to peasants needing travel papers to leave the lands of their lords. good to see china has come so far from their imperial roots.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

No permission to go to public school in Guangzhou even though me and my older brother were born in Guangzhou and grew up native Bilingual Cantonese & Mandarin... :(

I cant even call myself a 广州人 (Guangzhou-er) since I never got Guangzhou Hukou...

It's somehow easier to get American Citizenship than a Guangzhou Hukou... lmfao wtf

Travel does not have to involve lots of money. I live 9 km from the French border and 25 km from the Swiss border. Travelling there costs me the price of a train ticket.

I take my biometric passport with me, of course.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago

everywhere i travel does this now, often along with fingerprints etc

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 3 points 3 days ago

Japan has required fingerprints and photo for at least a decade now. Korea required the same when I was recently there.

[–] FRYD@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

I can’t really afford international travel right now, but I’d tolerate a good bit of security fuckery. I don’t really care if some foreign government has my biometric data if I can get in and get out smoothly.

[–] lonefighter@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah, part of me is like "the government can't have my fingerprints" but I work a job that requires criminal background checks so I've been fingerprinted and run through police and FBI databases more times than I can honestly remember... They've got my fingerprints. They all have my fingerprints. It's a little late to start worrying about it.

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You know there is a lot of options between travelling to other countries and going off-grid?

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

Don't you know? This is Lemmy, here either you support the militant revolution, or you are a fascist, there's no in-between.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 days ago

My government already has my biometric data and im not shocked or upset that they do. I fully expect my government to keep a record of all its citizens.

When i travel i dont mind other countries verifying my identity and my preference is for it be digital and fast.

I dont expect my privacy to include hiding who i am from my own government and a foreign government when im traveling to their country thats absurd.

[–] quediuspayu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

They are already everywhere. Quick, you need to go off grid ASAP, or at least offline just in case.

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm not going to be traveling again. And if birthright citizenship is revoked, I'll end up stateless.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Apparantly the executive order is not retroactive so if you were born before January 20, 2025, you're fine... (Unless donnie gets mad again and signs another executive order, then you're fucked)

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I might have to renounce due to a feeling of decency, tbh. And there's no country on earth except maybe Liberaland or Sealand I'm okay with.

A Citizen of the US is supposed to be loyal to the principles of the Constitution, not the President.

You can be a moral person while remaining a Citizen of the US.
