fact: League of Legends used to work on Linux via Proton until R*ot games added anticheat.

    [–] Saprophyte@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

So the community got so bad the developers had to intervene to take measures to prevent them from cheating each other out of fake internet points and people still play? Hrm... Doesn't sound like something I'd want to get into anyway.

    [–] MasterOfProton@lemmy.zip 1 points 17 hours ago

Yes, Steam have a good games for playing in Linux, no needs this game.

I was just gonna say "LoL players tend to be fucking awful people", but, seeing that there are many recovered addicts in this thread...

...unironically challenges my assumptions and gives me hope that people in general can change.

Now we just need to make Warthunder not work on linux...

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Not everyone who plays it is toxic, or addicted. There’s this gamemode right now, aram mayhem, queues are instant, everyone plays it constantly and it’s just a for-fun mode with ~15m games. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone actually be toxic in it.

    [–] Fanmion@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

My sweet summer child... I played aram only for years and my blocklist grows constantly. To be fair: for me, toxic begins by "EZ" and those player will instantly geht mute and block

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 0 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

This has nothing to do with league, this will happen in literally any pvp game. If you can’t stand it, it’s not the game’s fault. They give you the option to disable chat and emotes, it was your choice to keep them on.

    [–] ClamDrinker@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

It is actually the game's fault. Mutes and blocks are a last-line defense, not a first-line defense. Others games do proper moderation and will properly foster a positive community, and while they might have toxic people in them, they cannot be toxic as freely as LoL allowed them to be. Unless you are like, comparing it to a Call of Duty lobby, which is a meme on it's own for the same reason. League is starting to get around to banning people more actively but they should have started over a decade ago.

Player to player interaction is very important for people to enjoy multiplayer games and it's one of the reasons for people to prefer them over single player games. You can't always know who's an toxic moron ahead of time, and it's unreasonable to cut out all of the primarily positive interactions with people because of a few idiots who act like schoolyard bullies and try to put everyone else down at any moments and create a negative atmosphere. Trash talk is fine, but the kind of people that say "EZ" often do so at times where they've already won. In other words, they're punching down, and they're bad winners.

If you do that at a real life event, you're not going to be welcomed back. Because if you ain't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. And for multiplayer games to survive you need both good winners and good losers, otherwise the only people that eventually stick around are the toxic ones, and the game will die or just be known for it. Like LoL is.

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

What, you expect the game to punish players for saying “EZ” at the end of a match?? Not a single game will ever do that.

    [–] ClamDrinker@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Plenty of games will actually ban people that consistently act toxic yes. Maybe not if you do it once or twice. I'm not sure why you think that's so crazy. Even LoL itself if you do it enough and people consistently report you for it.

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I will never believe anyone will be banned, on any game, for saying EZ at the end of a game. I’ve known plenty of people who acted like this on every game they played and they never got any sort of punishment. This is not toxic, it’s acting like a child, which will never be bannable. Normal people aren’t bothered by that.

    [–] ClamDrinker@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

Well, if you've never heard of it, then it must never happen! You should know this if you play LoL, because they give your messages that your report has resulted in a penalty. Unless you never report anyone toxic.

This is not toxic, it’s acting like a child, which will never be bannable. Normal people aren’t bothered by that.

Normal people aren't bothered by it. But that doesn't mean it isn't toxic, on top of being childish. Besides, children too need to learn that behavior isn't acceptable. Pretty sure you can easily survive getting spat in the face too, but I'm sure you don't think we should normalize that either if some brats do it.

Is it said purely to attempt to denigrate other people's self worth? Yep. Is it not said in a situation where it could be considered trash talk and your words could come back to bite you in the ass? Yep.

Congratulations, that's pretty simply toxic, and cowardly, and childish. And you should really wonder if you want to be defending it in this thread of all places.

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

And you should really wonder if you want to be defending it in this thread of all places.

I agree. Lemmy users tend to be offended by just about everything, even a post game “ggez”.

    [–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

so basically a casual gamemode? i always thought there was already one and people just didn't tell me...

(i've played LoL twice, couldn't understand it either of those times, and i didn't like the pressure of it being so competitive, so i just never got into it)

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 hours ago

There was always regular aram (where you get a random champion and its perma 5v5 fighting, basically no strategy) but now the mayhem version gives you “augments” which is kind of like roguelike modifiers. It takes literally all the skill out of the mode so its pure RNG. That means all ranks play together and everyone gets to have fun.

    [–] ghen@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I love playing League of Legends, it's a great game. I just can't play League of Legends because of all the other people that play League of Legends

    [–] WhiteRabbit_33@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is how I feel about most PVP games. I used to love playing smite and overwatch too, but then the player base ruined both of them.

    [–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

I have not played in a while, but the last time I did play, Squad is essentially a milsim-lite, and it has an actually decent community.

Though I may be biased, as I was an early tester for Project Reality, way back in the day.

To make a long story very short, basically, a good chunk of the original PR dev team founded Offworld Studios, and basicslly just remade the same concept of a game, in Unreal 4, and more recently they apparently switched over to UE5.

I can at least guarantee that an average Squad playing experience is not going to be as suicidal ideation inducing as an average CoD playing experience.

Now we just need to make Warthunder not work on linux...

Gaijin devs have us all by the crotch lol.

I would kill for a competitor game. I'd even be happy with a proper DCS arcade mod that let's you do the same stuff as WT realistic battles.

People keep hating on LoL, but there is one really great thing about it: it keeps a lot of the worst gamers ring-fenced away from other games.

    [–] verstra@programming.dev 39 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Linux really is the reason I dont' play anymore. Thank you linux.

    [–] lukalix98@programming.dev 14 points 2 days ago

    Same, never been happier.

    [–] ttyybb@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (10 children)

I have met one person that plays LOL and does not actively hate it.

    [–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 10 points 2 days ago

    I honestly don’t believe you 😂

I tried LOL 10+ years ago and it felt like my input didn't matter, my hero was just watching those minions fighting.

It's more fun playing CS at least I have a chance of winning when I play with someone that's as bad as me.

    [–] lukalix98@programming.dev 5 points 2 days ago

    Then you woke up?

Linux: Able to play DotA... Also a win for Linux

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Having played lol for years, I tried so much to enjoy Dota, but honestly it feels like they don’t care to keep the game modern. On league when a champion gets old, they rework it. When visuals are not clear they make them clear. Usually all AOEs you can tell exactly where they end. Dota did not do this, so half the roster feels like all they do is variants of auto attacks.

Also the fact that every hero feels like a disgustingly OP version of a league champion (though in truth it’s probably league champions that are nerfed dota heros). Sniper has like 3x the range of Caitlyn, everyone wants BKB/Blink dagger, CCs last absolutely forever.

Maybe I’m just not used to it, but playing dota tilts me more than league ever has. Honestly even ranked league is chill these days.

    [–] Darcranium@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah once you have soured on one, I can imagine it would be really hard to enjoy another, since they are so incredibly similar. Dota came first so the game and nearly every hero in league is somehow based on a Dota hero. I'll grant it's a more accessible (shorter learning curve) game which is why the player base is higher, but the reason the pro scene is so much bigger and more established in Dota is precisely because it is so meticulously balanced and rebalanced each month.

    [–] onnekas@sopuli.xyz 0 points 9 hours ago

    Dota came first

This is true. However, League was the first 'big' moba that was a standalone game and it quickly felt more polished/modern than the Warcraft mod to me. If dota 2 came out earlier I think I would have never left it and I would have never even tried league of legends.

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

but the reason the pro scene is so much bigger and more established in Dota is precisely because it is so meticulously balanced and rebalanced each month.

What do mean it’s bigger? League pro play has over 4 times the viewers. It also has more players and more tournaments. League’s final last year had 6.7M viewers, and 6.9M the year before, a figure that has never been beaten by any other esport in history, not even close. Dota’s peak for comparison was only about 2.7M, same for CSGO.

As for balance, well, every game tries their best and you won’t convince me that any is much better balanced than the other. League also has a balance patch every two weeks and I’m sure dota players complain about balance as much as league players do.

    [–] Darcranium@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

My bad I was just looking at the prize pool from those old TI tournaments ($12 million). And my information is outdated. Suffice to say a larger audience doesn't mean a better game. In my experience, for every big pop culture phenomenon in history, there's always been a better version of it which goes underappreciated because it appeals to a smaller audience base. Most of the LoL or FPS player base is just a little bit too stupid or impatient for Dota 2, so they can't handle the two year learning curve

    [–] irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Switching to Linux did break my addiction to gaming, though usually I play single player stuff. And then Steam started working, but fortunately crypto came along and made graphics cards shoot up in price and now LLMs have made memory and storage shoot up, so I haven't upgraded my PC in a long time. So that's kept me from going back. Now I just play little games on the Switch periodically. But I can't use those controllers for anything that requires lots of detail control or for long periods., so I don't play too often.

Gotta have a healthy relationship with a hobby.

Its one thing for it to be an important part of your life and you as a person... its another thing when it becomes your entire life, when you start throwing away other things, opportunities, relationships, finances, etc, to keep being intensely dedicated to it.

As dumb as it may sound, I’m disappointed I cannot play Halo Wars 2 anymore, makes no sense why it’s a Microsoft store exclusive.

    [–] wendyz@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The only person I know who played League of Legends was entirely toxic, now she's nice to me, but still, quite immature and a bully towards people she doesn't like.

    [–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So... still toxic. Just marginally less.

Don’t forget Fortnite and pubg. Best thing that’s ever happened to Linux.

    [–] pewpew@feddit.it 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Wait there was a workaround to play League Of Legends with a dedicated version of Proton GE

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

That died real quick when they added their kernel anti cheat.

    [–] ghen@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Does that work for the fighting game 2XKO and how do I gain this power?

    [–] pewpew@feddit.it 1 points 1 day ago

No idea about that. That version of Proton was made specifically for LoL
