Iran said it had shot down a United States Air Force fighter jet over its territory, and footage released by Iranian channels appears to show the wreckage of an F-15E Strike Eagle from the U.S. Air Force’s 494th Fighter Squadron.

Iranian outlets initially claimed the aircraft was an F-35, but a closer review of the debris shown in the video points to a different aircraft. Visible sections of the airframe, including parts of the fuselage and external mounting points, match the layout of the F-15E rather than the stealth design of the F-35.

Begun the Epstein Wars has

The more high-profile losses there are for the US early in this war, the lower the chance of things escalating.

Counting on the Trump Administration to do the right thing is pointless. Counting on them to cave and avoid doing the unpopular thing is possible.

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

See I get where you’re coming from and in a normal sane world you would be correct, but two things about this scenario worry me; the first is obviously that Trump is wildly unpredictable and prone to emotional decision making, especially when he thinks he might look bad or weak, and the other is that this sort of scenario and the bombing philosophy they are embracing is the exact reason to want to get nukes as soon as it was considered scientifically possible.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

IMO, one of the key reasons that Trump jumped into the war in Iran is that things went so well with the kidnapping of Maduro. If a few soldiers had been killed in that operation the Iran war might not have happened.

He's unpredictable and emotional. It's true that in some ways he hats to be seen as weak. But, he takes offense at absolutely everything, and everything makes him look weak. So, it's hard to say that any one thing will be the deciding factor. He seems to chicken out a lot more than he seems to double down when things don't go his way.

Agreed.

As much as one might want their country to win, as an American who is 100% anti-war, incidents like this are definitely helpful to slowing the march to war and make it exponentially harder for Donald and Keg-breath to justify what they're doing.

Strange way of putting boots on the ground.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

‘chutes on the ground.

[–] herseycokguzelolacak@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

In Trump's defence, he did not say how the boots would come down.

... Did Trump just preside over the first F15 loss in history?

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Allegedly Kuwait shot down 3 of them before in a "friendly fire accident". ~~Though the friendly fire story is getting a tad dubious.~~

[–] Krono@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What makes you question the story?

Certainly the Trump administration had been lying about it losses, and they are releasing many face-saving coverup stories. It would be foolish to give them the benefit of the doubt.

But the Kuwaiti friendly fire incident actually has lots of evidence to back it up. You can watch video of the "dogfight"- a Kuwaiti jet is clearly attacking US jet at very close range. The US jet appears to be surprised, as they fail to deploy most counter-measures.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

I hadn't seen the videos of it but you're right that one was probably a true hero going rogue.

[–] AlDente@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Maybe it's normal to arrest those involved in friendly-fire incidents on criminal charges, but this author doesn't think so.

The military authorities in Kuwait have arrested the Kuwaiti Air Force Pilot, named the “Ghost of Kuwait” on charges of ‘criminal negligence’ here Tuesday

The charges and the arrest points at deliberate act on part of the KAF combat pilot.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Remember, Kuwait would be inclined to arrest anyone that embarrassed them or messes up in some way. So, the fact that they were arrested doesn't mean it was deliberate.

[–] zqps@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Also US allies like to placate their imperial master at the expense of their own people and dignity.

[–] herseycokguzelolacak@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

That Kuwaiti dude probably has the highest kill ratio in this war.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

He finds new ways to fail and embarrass us all.

Didnt kuwait shut down two of them ? F15 never lost an air fight, but getting shot down by aa is something else

[–] criscodisco@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah, two were shot down by Iraqi AA during Desert Storm. One was AAA, one was a SAM.

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

Well - I mean - it's a war. Fair game to self-defend against the aggressor.

[–] herseycokguzelolacak@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And also an A-10. Keep it coming Iran, you do us proud!

If you’re gonna start a war you’re gonna have to break some eggs.

These are the consequences, the western media is going to complain about every fucking shutdown plane or vehicle and soldiers is gonna be a long fucking war.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So he's just feeding strike fighters to the coyotes at this point, huh?

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They're doing a "blackhawk down" and sending in tonnes of airforce to rescue the downed pilots and losing even more aircraft in the process. It's a complete clownshow.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Got any good sources on that? I'd be really interested in seeing the details.

[–] perestroika@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

One viewpoint: in-flight refueling over Iran in plain view of civilians. If even a single air defense unit sees a procedure like this, it will be carnage (possibly 3 aircraft down with one shot).

Good, don't attack other countries for no good reason then!

[–] xenomor@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Good. Hope they got the pilot.

Edit: pilots

Further edit: fuck these pilots, they deserve endless scorn.

[–] BuyEU@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 days ago

If you join a military that has been doing war crimes, and starting illegal wars since before you were born, I have no sympathy if you die.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 days ago

Being a US Air Force pilot is like being a gas chamber operator during the Holocaust.

[–] rf_@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

In the words of Trump to a soldier’s widow: “he knew what he signed up for”

[–] rwrwefwef@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Edit: pilots

F-15 has 1 pilot, one weapons officer.

[–] xenomor@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Got it, thanks. Next time I’ll just refer to them more generally as baby killers.
