i live in a tropic place. whenever i see tourist admiring an open door hotel in bali, all i think about is the million of undocumented species crawling in your bed sheet and mosquitoes buzzing all night long

[–] Hansae@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yet another reason im very happy in my cold grey windy home country.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah. Those winters might get old, but I'd much rather be a little cold outside than constantly getting swarmed by dangerous critters.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 31 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

last time i did that i just got covered in snails

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 32 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

god i wish i had snails. all i ever see here is slugs. homeless snails :(

[–] HoneyMustardGas@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago

Slugs will evolve into snails with a moon stone lol.

[–] puppycat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 weeks ago

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

What the fuck is the green thing on your leg? Carpet padding?

[–] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 34 points 3 weeks ago

Tape but sticky side out

[–] dmention7@midwest.social 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I thought it was green painters tape wrapped sticky side out. Almost as if this masochist wanted to see ALL THE TICKS.

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well, if you're not seeing the ticks, they're already biting you.

[–] ascend@lemmy.radio 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Its OK, they just find a home in your butthole

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago

That happened to my mate lmao

[–] SuperPengato@scribe.disroot.org 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Some plants have seeds with little hooks to be disseminated by animals, that must be this.

[–] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Nope, it's tape wrapped around the ankles to stop ticks from crawling up your leg.

[–] SuperPengato@scribe.disroot.org 4 points 3 weeks ago

Aye, I got mixed up in the comments, genealogy, the seeds I talk about are in another comment to which I thought the parent comment was replying...

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

Pair of green elasticated trousers?

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

NE near coastal fresh wetlands of the US are absolutely crawling in ticks. Ughhhhhhh. Nature has rejected us

[–] EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Apparently turkeys eat ticks. We just need to keep the wild turkey population up and they'll help cull the infestation.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

Sorry, the only species we'll conserve are bloodsucking insects and jellyfish.

[–] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Possums do too! And they're immune to rabies. Awesome little cute scary looking creatures.

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Opossums don't really eat ticks. The 'study' that said that was pretty bad science. If I stuck you in a room with nothing but dog food for a while, and then said that humans eat dog food at X rate, would you consider it a true statement?

[–] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago

Interesting. I wasn't aware of the controversy around that assertion. The 2021 study doesn't necessarily seem entirely definitive either in my opinion, the total absence of ticks in the stomach contents despite the presence of many other insects seems suspicious, and they only examined 32 possums from a single area. Nonetheless you're right, the other study doesn't seem to have had the best methodology. I'd like to see more information but a search really only turns up those two studies and a bunch of shitty articles on them.

Around here you'd just be covered in these little fuckers

Image

[–] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 8 points 3 weeks ago

Around here you get both. Lots and lots of both...

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Just FYI, you can vaccinate yourself against ticks these days.

Still don't want them on me, but at least you don't have to worry about borrelia

[–] bob_lemon@feddit.org 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I envy people whose problem with ticks is borreliosis.

Ours have the fun stuff: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick-borne_encephalitis

Luckily, there also a vaccine against that. So I'll expand the PSA to that (especially for those that moved here from abroad)

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

The vaccine against it also needs to be refreshed regularly

[–] bob_lemon@feddit.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

Central and eastern Europe. The Wikipedia article has a map.

Although you should always check the official vaccine recommendations of your country/area, like this one for Germany

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Still waiting for the lyme vaccine to finish and become available.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 10 points 3 weeks ago

Self immolation. It's the only way to be sure.

Also you’re supposed to tuck your pants into your socks

[–] blackbrook@mander.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago

Kevlar socks, ideally.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 6 points 3 weeks ago

Depends where you live

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You can't spell sticky without...

[–] grahamja@reddthat.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Deet works just fine.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We need to cull the deer and stop burning fossile fuels.

[–] Blackout@fedia.io 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Agent orange the forests and ban sucking blood

[–] albbi@piefed.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

Drain the swamp! Oops, wrong Agent orange.

[–] qualia@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I wonder if an adhesive was involved in collecting so many lil ticklers.

Gun to my head I'd have to call those shoes hiking loafers. (paradox)

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'm not sure what I'm looking at exactly but I think it's an ankle wrapped in "tick tape", so I'd say yes

[–] wieson@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago
