how tf do you activitypub live multiplayer games, separate http request per packet?

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 26 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Minecraft and Minetest (now Luanti) let you host your own server, so you wouldn't really gain anything from federation. Honestly, I'm not sure what benefits ActivityPub would have for games, except maybe Newgrounds-style sites.

I actually remembered that when writing this! (though I couldn't remember what it was called) It's definitely cool, but more in the "Doom running on a pregnancy test" way.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

You could make a federated mod database (aka NexusMods replacement) that uses torrent for distribution to reduce stress on the servers. Could work a bit like PeerTube.

[–] KiwiTB@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh no.... No games aimed at exploiting children on fediverse. Good.

This guy didnt experience having a potato PC growing up.

Even a low-end PC at the time on my birth country was pretty much expensive - 6 digits (one at 300 000) worth of our own currency

Now I'm in southernmost Ukraine (no effects of war there) the prices are cheaper but is still pretty expensive

In short this guy may be fun at parties - while I'm suffering on the PC prices

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Digits of currency is a completely useless measurement - typical hours of work required to buy would be universal to understand. Though "low-end PC" also varies a lot depending on who you ask.

Pi zero is 45 mins of labour here, the zero 2 is around 75 mins. Could compile and play CDDA on those easily, no chance of playing anything else modern though. Could play some browser games. It has a whole 512MB of RAM, for comparison UT1999 recommends 32MB. Obviously, its more than powerful enough to run Doom.

You're saying that from a high-salary j*b perspective - most of them have low salary including ours (mine is 39 in our currency an hour) so the device costing 15000 will take 48 days (!) just to afford it

Digits of currency is a completely useless measurement

Words from someone richer than us

Never reading your ragebait again. Bye

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 6 points 3 weeks ago

48 days would be useful if you had specified what the device was. Units of currency without even specifying the currency is useless, 500 in one may be 4 in another.

My fosh I'm sorry you had to take the bait before I did... but thank you anyway

[–] KiwiTB@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There are thousands of better games to play on potatoes than these.

[–] hankskyjames777@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you sure about that (you think you can fool us with that)

All paid, all terrible, nothing worth it

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

Are you shitting me? Computers are the best tool for having access to literally thousands of fucking games for free that can all run on garbage.

My family didn't have anything top of the line, held onto what we had for 8+ years. I had (and have) more free games than I could ever possibly play.

There's source ports of classic old games, there's emulation of the hits from decades kd previous consoles and handhelds, there's plenty of open source games out there, there's the entire back catalog of old browser games (mostly flash) through flashpoint, US game development college students release their projects for free all the fucking time, there's fan games for stuff like sonic, and lastly there's easy as hell piracy.

And by waiting or playing older stuff, you let time and other people sort out what's good from the trash, so you can better rely on what people say is good.

I was living out of a low powered business laptop released in 2011 until 2021. In 2018 I upgraded it to 8GB of RAM and an SSD. I gamed so damn much on that thing, just not whatever the latest popular game was. I still use it occasionally for chilling on the couch or my porch.

Damn this hits me more than than I've experienced

Like my father beat me with the nails on his belt

Anyway for mine the potato PC was low 5 digits (one was 15,000) of my currency

[–] Wrrzag@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

Anyway for mine the potato PC was low 5 digits (one was 15,000) of my currency

This is meaningless. 15000 pesetas are 90 euros, but in Spain the actual cost would have been the same before and after the Euro (if prices had been converted 1:1, of course) independently of it being 5 or 2 digits.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] NataliaTheDrowned2@fedia.io 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Even worse than you think, those can't run - also that would need me to setup a payment service in Steam which I don't have yet

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

Huh? Those are both free - steam doesn't require a payment method for account creation.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 20 points 3 weeks ago

This doesn't make any sense

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 15 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

"Minetest says naur" what are you trying to convey with this gibberish?

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's the word no with an accent

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah I know how australians "talk" but what does minetest says no mean

[–] NataliaTheDrowned2@fedia.io 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Okay. So what does federation mean in the context of a videogame? Will I be able to craft an iron toothpick from my piefed account?

[–] NataliaTheDrowned2@fedia.io 2 points 3 weeks ago

That would be a 3D engine thing not a social media thing

But depending on both of the instances with different software (a game and a forum platform, in this case PieFed if they both support OAuth (the stack that lets you sign in on one platform with an account on the other)) you can sign in with that PieFed account

[–] BladeFederation@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What? Apples and oranges. Game servers are centrally hosted. You can already host private servers in some of these, like Minecraft, it's just not federated with other servers because that kind of defeats the point of private servers.

[–] hankskyjames777@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Not for the account servers. Account servers can connect to the game server and merge the data from the payers in it. If multiple accounts from the account server join that same game server the data from those accounts get merged before being sent back to the game server to lighten the load on that server. Like multiple users from other instances to a community on one instance in PieFed/MBin.

For private servers it internally can be secured with an auth token, encryption and/or its literally just a whitelist

This and the game server will be a part of an instance which does both (game server for one, account server for the other)

Timberborn just came out with automation that includes an HTTP API...

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 weeks ago

okay I might have to get that game if these are the kinda shenanigans they got

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I had so much hope for that but from what I could see in testing it only outputs true or false values

[–] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Considering that they surprised us with it rather than including it in the public experimental branch, I think there's a reasonable chance they'll be updating it once they get some player feedback. It definitely feels like a stub that'll get expanded in the future.

Also, even if each lever or adapter can only transmit one bit of data, with enough of them you could encode whatever you want...

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I want the source code for fortnite so bad. It could set millions free of windows. Also I'm morbidly curios what their network stack looks like.

[–] NataliaTheDrowned2@fedia.io 1 points 3 weeks ago

It would be like this but for Minetest/Minecraft:

You have an account on one server (mt.foo1.bar) butwant to join the other (mt.foo2.bar), with it you can join the other server using the same account by giving the link to the account server.

And youre in that server, one of the differences is how players' identifying pseudonyms are shown, your identifer is still only the username (just user1) but other players from other servers will have handles shown on top of their avatar to you (user2@mt.foo2.bar (local to the server youre joining in), user3@mt.foo3.bar (other account server)).

On other players' perspectives your avatar has your full handle being shown (user1@mt.foo1.bar)

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is pixelfed active? When I used it I was alone

[–] hankskyjames777@piefed.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

For development yes. Depends on the instance youre in

[–] SpatchyIsOnline@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Minecraft has Drasl, a replacement account/authentication server which isn't federated, but if there was demand for it, I'm sure it wouldn't be impossible for the developers to introduce 🤔
