What's something normal that should remain a taboo?

Fast fashion.

Unconscious consumption in general. People are pouring crazy amounts of money into plastic garbage, "collectibles", general useless and unnecessary junk, lifestyle products etc. Then they defend it with a flippant "lol intrusive thoughts won UwU". I wouldn't even mind so much if it wasn't too often the case that these same people also complain about environmental issues and capitalism.

"but but i'm a magpie, I'm a loot goblin" is just normalizing the behavior, trying to make it cute. It's not. You're very directly contributing to the increasing waste problem in the world and giving money to megacorps (think plastic production in particular). If you absolutely must do this, find products made of natural materials, produced by real people. Yes, it'll cost more. Yes, that's the real price of your obsession.

Yeah, I see a lot of people appropriate neurodivergent lingo to justify it. Being autistic doesn't mean your life literally depends on owning every figure of your favorite anime.

[–] Voidian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 16 hours ago

Careful. This sounds a lot like encouraging people to take personal responsibility of their consumption habits. That's literally fascism. Someone might throw the Mr. Gotcha meme at you.

Apparently being fascist these days.

I've heard incest porn is really popular these days. Not every title needs to be about a step relative.

Tbh porn usage in general should be tanboo, yet is currently normal

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 12 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

No, porn should be normalised. We don't need to shame people for having a sexuality. Repression is bad actually.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world -3 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

It's just bad for you. Sexuality should be directed at humans, not yojr phone screen

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

What if I look at porn with My partner?

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world -2 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

It's still bad for you.... It's really not about birthrates or even religious justification, it does physical damage to your brain and is like buying candy from the cartel (i.e no matter how ethically-sourced you think your porn is, you are supporting a system reliant on coercion, kidnapping and objectification)

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 3 points 19 hours ago

Cite a study.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 17 hours ago

it's just bad for you

Surely you've got evidence to back up such a claim

I don't want to ban porn but I agree that it should be a taboo, with some nuance.

First let's remember what taboo means:

*Taboo:

a subject, word, or action that is avoided for religious or social reasons:*

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/taboo

Again, I don't want to ban porn but I do think it's social acceptance should dial back a bit. I don't think it's good for people to have so little barriers to consume it. Even if the barrier is just a vague, cultural norm. I think porn contributes a lot to loneliness. It's simply a too low barrier band-aid for something that should motivate people to go out, have hobbies, learn to be around people and find an actual human partner. I also think it's another feature of predatory capitalism that sells convenience, instead of human connection.

It's just that we generally lack the delicacy to somehow socially discourage something, without shaming people about it. There are very real issues, neurodivergence etc. which can make socializing very challenging and having some outlet for sexual expression can be good and healthy. But there are a lot of people who will always take the route of least resistance, which tends to just perpetually lower their capacity to tolerate any kind of challenge. Lack of nuance and inability to accept that there are as many differences between people as there are people, is a very real problem. What's good for one person can be bad for another. In the case of porn, it can be very detrimental to a lot of people, while genuinely helpful (and also liberating, reclaiming autonomy of one's body etc.) to some people. Which is why I don't want to ban porn, I just want more consciousness around consuming it.

I've said "I don't want to ban porn" 4 times now and I still wouldn't be at all surprised to be called a fascist for wanting to ban porn. Because people's capacity to handle nuance is just that bad.

A game where you try to make your team guess a word when you have a list of words you can’t use as a clue. That should always be taboo.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

Bzzzt! "Taboo" was on the card. Can't say that.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Killing/kidnapping kids

Ads (they actually were fairly taboo at one point)

Handing over your personal details on the internet

I think you meant to say Bribery

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 1 points 18 hours ago

Cruelty and violence are taboo. Unless you pay someone to do it out of sight, then it's just breakfast.
