Timothee's annoying but in this case imo he's completely right and imo the main backlash he's facing is from people who never watch opera / ballet getting mad that somebody pointed out the obvious that the general population dont care about these art forms. Unfortunately, they've increasingly just become more like museum exhibits rehashing the greatest historical works than a living moving art.

It seemed like he was really awesome but repeatedly kept undoing himself by being an asshole or an idiot. Was made to eat shit towards the end but somehow magically was able to beat Endo (without any practice or study of his technique and equipment). Then he comes home and starts crying when he holds his child. Is he crying because he realised he fucked up or what is going on? What is the message here?
At the end of the movie, he's not redeemed. When he praises Endo and wishes him luck, he really only means it in trying to look gracious and also, Endo winning the tournament after he beat him would unofficial confer him as the best player in the world Marty acts like a complete entitled asshole to everyone in his life, you expect him to be a sociopath, like he's not fully human, he's beyond morality, more like a wild animal. but actually all the harm he causes was by a mundane guy who had the full capacity for empathy and self control as anyone else, which gets hinted at through the film, but the final be scene is the final damning reveal.

Also, he was pretty much right. No offense to opera and ballet but they objectively have an incredibly niche audience now and the experience of becoming one of the best in those fields has to be worse and less satisfying for most people than becoming a movie star.
That's not what he was saying though. He didn't say they have niche audiences he said they're just doing it to "keep this thing alive." Like out of some form of obligation.
I do wish a lot of the money that went to opera would go to smaller theatres instead, but I don't think any art form is worse than another due to the size of the audience. If I thought that I'd love marvel slop and call of duty.
edit: I don't know a lot about opera or ballet, but I know a bit about theatre. In theatre there's still incredible new plays being made, so I'm sure there is also still great new ballet and opera being made. You're unlikely to get a lot of butts in seats in theatre unless you're setting up a widely known play, which is why most big theatres main programmes are shakesspeare and things from 60+ years ago. I assume it's the same reason why opera and ballet mainly does really old stuff - It's what sells tickets. I was once an extra in a Mozart opera, which was a lot of fun.

There absolutely is! I love going to the ballet with my wife, and people are totally making new shows. They are incorporating modern dance techniques, they are diversifying from European traditions.
In fact, one of the best ballet shows I've seen is Pisuwin, a Wolastoqiyik ballet scored by the Wolastoqiyik composer Jeremy Dutcher and directed/choreographed by champion dancer Possesom, and fusing classical ballet and Wabanaki grass dance to tell a traditional Wolastoqiyik story.

The amount of pressure and training and abuse girls have to go through to become professional ballet dancers shouldn't be acceptable for anything. It destroys your hips, knees, feet and fucks with your body image and eating habits like few other things. Maybe there are more modern schools with less abusive methods, but I doubt it. My partner attended one of those. It was about dancing and self expression rather than about the performance itself, so she has a very healthy relationship to ballet. But for professional troupes? Nah those need to be torn down and built from the ground up.

This isn't inherently true for all of ballet, that's just the cultural imprint ballet currently has in the mainstream.
I love going to the ballet, only discovered that about myself a few years ago after coming out. My friend is a ballet teacher at a local dance school, where the kids are having fun, not being treated like trash, and it costs a fraction as much for them to go to ballet school than for a kid to join hockey.
The theatre we have is a historic building, beautiful theatre, amazing ballets come here. And the tickets are dirt cheap. They usually give out free tickets to all the local nonprofits that work with critical neighbourhoods and underserved communities to hand out to people. Newcomers/migrants make up a large amount of the audience whenever my wife and I go.
When a new show comes there are also often a lot of kids--dance is super popular here.
The rich people here couldn't give a fuck about ballet for the most part. It doesn't actually have that type of cachet anymore. Only dedicated dancers and fans of dance go to these performances.
Ballet has influence in a lot of places when you start looking for it. The steps and theory and all that form the basis for a wide variety of dance and choreography. That's not what you were talking about though, so it's kind of a dirty trick of me to bring it up. It felt relevant to the conversation, but I'm honestly just being scatterbrained.
It's only niche in its "purest" form, but if one starts to look for it ballet can be observed in a lot of places, where a great deal of people enjoy it. I know that's a bit of a copout, but I think it's necessary to point out. I generally mean the principles and teachings having wide-ranging influence - Basically most physical theatre and acting has its foundation in ballet, but there's also just stuff like actual ballet occurring and people enjoying it - For example Mads Mikkelsens dance in Another Round^[This became wayy too ADHD punctuated. Forgive me.]

It's a rich people thing because tickets are expensive. Storytelling through dance is pretty popular, when it's presented in the right framework. Theatre is generally a rich people / old people thing, but that doesn't make it inherently bad. It's just a result of the world we live in sadly. Shakesspeare was for the proles originally.
The only thing I agree that sucks about ballet is the insane culture the dancers are subjected to. But if I let that have any significance I couldn't enjoy any weinstein movie, like you alluded to. That shit really sucks though. Fucking hate it. Wish it stopped. There really needs to be a fundamental reshaping of the cultural institutions in the west - if not the world.

tim's whole point was a comparison to audience inattention, that he had concerns about cinema and the struggles and tensions to keep it relevant and popular, worrying that it might become like ballet, an art form he has had a tremendous amount of exposure to through immediate family. frankly, he's got a point. last time i sat through a 3 hour movie, i came away pissed at the medium and incurious at the message.

also, hes a kid. if you recorded everything i said in a 2 hour open interview in my 20s about the state of things, i would have been dropping radioactive takes left and right.
