When I was younger and TNG was coming out, I thought "oh wow this is so cool, every 20 years we go another 100 years into the future of Star Trek!" And here we are almost 40 years later, still rehashing the same characters from the same eras over and over. The only breath of fresh air is the last bit of Discovery and Starfleet Academy. Give me a flagship show set in the 26th century or a show about the Temporal Cold War. Something new!

I recall that feeling!
I also recall that there were many TOS fans my age for whom the Kirk-Spock-McCoy triumvirate defined Star Trek.
I never thought that way myself but it’s been a dividing line in the franchise from the start.
I love SNW for what it is but I have to say that I was disappointed that Akiva Goldsman — who said he was himself disappointed when he joined Discovery’s writers room in season one to find out that they originally had no intention to include Pike — turned out to be more focused in telling the pre-TOS backstory of the TOS main characters than in telling the story of the Enterprise under Pike’s command.
I was surprised how much I liked Paul Wesley's portrayal of Kirk. Wouldn't be upset by this.
Same. I really liked him.
This was an problem that Picard showrunner Terry Matalas ran into when he pitched his Star Trek: Legacy spinoff series set on board the USS-Enterprise-G (formerly USS Titan), as all of those sets were destroyed immediately after Picard season 3 wrapped up, adding significant startup costs to recreate everything for a new show.
Ah so that’s why that sets are relevant. No sets no spinoff.
Oh, so that’s why…
Picard was produced in California, seemingly a condition of Patrick Stewart.
Paramount was able to get a one-time California state grant to defray costs but it was produced on leased soundstages rather than Paramount’s own.
This meant that there was a very short window after production ended before the sets had to be broken down. Some of the set elements and properties were packed and shipped (perhaps to Toronto?) It seems that the Enterprise D bridge reconstruction was transferred to the Roddenberry archive.
That's some serious clout to swing around, but I hope it wasn't medically advised. 🥲
It seems that CBS senior executives really wanted a show with Patrick Stewart as Picard.
Many attempts to pitch a show were made but it wasn’t until Chabon flattered him into reading a concept that Stewart would even meet with the creators.
CBS and other studios had access to the state grants to incent the major streamers to keep production in California and made the choice to blow theirs on Picard.
Ok, phew. 😅
I had this idea over a year ago.
Let SNW transition into a new TOS. I'd like to see it. I'm happy that they're considering it.
The SNW co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers have been chatting up this idea for almost a year it seems.
The announcement that Thomas Jane was cast as McCoy, and appears in the SNW series finale at the end of season five, suggests that, unlike Matalas’ Legacy concept, there was some series buy-in at senior levels prior to the merger.
Meh...
Oh for fuck’s sake. Can we end the prequel train already?
Strange New Worlds is great. Prequels can drag a franchise down if they're low-effort cashgrabs but SNW is the most consistently good Star Trek has ever been.
I do enjoy Strange New Worlds. It’s almost what I want out of NuTrek, I just wish it was a new crew on a new ship. Keep the cast, I like them, but I don’t like that NuTrek is 82% based on nostalgia
Indeed.
Strange New Worlds has been some of the best Trek we've had in 35 years.
I'll also put S2 of Prodigy in there as well. It is patiently criminal that show got canceled.
Agreed. I want more Prodigy! And more Lower Decks. Starfleet Academy is pretty good so far too.
Personally I'm happy if there are no more pre-TOS series. And I really am "meh" about Paul Wesley's Kirk so I don't need a series with him in the lead.
I mean if they make it, I'll check it out. But I'll be perfectly fine if they just don't.
