100% chance most officials think it's a desert because arabs

[–] axont@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago (4 children)

One time I mentioned to a coworker there's a ski resort in northern Iran and he said, "They have snow there? I thought they were Muslim."

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 25 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's a well known fact that any place a Muslim touches becomes a cartoon desert and anyone doing anything recreational gets killed on the spot /s

I met a Canadian couple in Vietnam who expressed surprise at seeing so many Russians there. They said that they didn't think communists had holidays.

To their credit they allowed me to completely rewrite their world view over the course of a couple of weeks. They were alright, just very naïve.

I've seen people say the same shit about Afghanistan, WHILE we were actually at war with them.

Sid Myer's civilization level understanding of the world.

Yes, the terrain gets generated based on which civ you choose.

And also think Iranians are Arabs.

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 21 points 3 days ago

Because all Muslims are arabs!/s

Honestly I'd kind of assumed it's arid just because of where it's located, but y'know, I'm not an official of a country at war with them. In no way did I realise it extended far enough north to be partly outside the arid band north of the equator.

80% of Iran is arid or semi-arid in the koppen system, but because of their latitude and mountain ranges they do have a pretty unique weather system consisting of hot arid deserts sitting right next to cold arid deserts. Near the coastlines though it becomes humid subtropical. Iran has a very neat climate I've always liked researching

just learned that the usa is kinda big, thought it was the size of luxemburg

[–] Utter_Karate@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The US has larger land area, but Luxemburg has more people.

[–] booty@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

Common misconception. There are actually more people in the US but the ones in Luxembourg are bigger so it looks like there's more of them. They're like 12 feet tall over there.

[–] axont@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This is also a misconception. Luxembourg has a unique mineral density in their soil that causes light diffraction within the fog to make people look smaller or larger. Furthermore the 12 feet tall thing is just an average. Most luxembourgish people are under 3 feet tall, while a scant few are well over 1000.

There are actually more people in the US

Common misconception, Americans aren't actually people

[–] cmhickman358@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

So Luxembourg is more people per capita?

This man has not learned the immortal science of looking up countries on Google Maps and making basic observations.

the full image seems to be fine, but I guess twitter decides to cut off the edges when generating the smaller version of the image to fit in the post?

So I guess you gotta leave a bit of buffer room at the edges of your images when cropping in order to prevent them from being butchered

There were good crops during the Irish famine it's just they were just exported while allowing the locals to starve.

Ignorance like this should be legal grounds for immediate firing from any job (even if it has nothing to do with the subject of geopolitics)

This is the Greek concept Amathia made manifest, and it should be considered a social evil and punished accordingly

[–] red_giant@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

Lucky for Johannes being a “geopolitical commentator” isn’t a job

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (3 children)

That’s like not knowing Hawaii is an island

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

Ummm askcually, it's a chain of islands nerd

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

I thought Hawaii is a toast

[–] Sickos@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

trump-who-must-go it's an island?

sad-boi Wow, I didn't know that. You're telling me now for the first time.

I for one love Twitter links to Twitter screenshots without any link to the actual tweet. It's how the site was meant to be used

the "persecuted by the Dutch government" in question? https://www.jmk.info/about

Though I was acquitted of sedition (risking 5 years in prison), I was sentenced to 40 hours of community service for having insulted one Moroccan-Dutch politician. That politician had called for the destruction of half of all Dutch livestock in 2019 at a national farmers’ protest in The Hague.

metaphysician

Not metaphysicist?

[–] Calfpupa@lemmy.ml 21 points 3 days ago

Geopolitical, not geographical ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ

"geopolitical commentator" is somehow less serious than me putting "ceramic sanitation engineer" in my LinkedIn profile for my time as a dishwasher.
