I'll downvote in an art share community if:

  • The art is politically trolling or otherwise deliberately offensive.

  • An artist is spamming there with too many posts in a short time.

  • The artist is self promoting too hard in the title/comments. (Or includes any sort of 'clickbait'.)

  • The art is really, really, really bad.

[–] Staden_@pawb.social 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There actually is a community for posting bad art only:
!shitty_art_share@piefed.social

Please don't downvote there :v

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 28 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What if the art is too good?

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Definitely downvote there if the art is good.

Followed by a sneering, rude as hell comment that's actually praising them.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Please don't downvote the "bad" art. Some of us well, I know I am not great at the visual arts (I am a performing arts guy, if you manage to catch one of my shows you are in for a treat), especially now thanks to having lost some pieces. Sometimes I have nowhere else to share my shit because let's be real, my friends don't care.

Let's encourage the art and artists we see, I guess is what I'm asking. I know I could use it, so I bet others could too.

As long as you can do better than a toddler dragging crayons across the wall, you're safe from me.

The punishment for Atheists is finding out that there actually is a sexually repressed racist homophobic genocidal infanticidal pestilential old white man who is in charge and will never ever die and get the hell out of the way.

A truly horrific fate

[–] artifex@piefed.social 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh, so this is the bad place.

Well that specific god is an incel, there's no godesses he's the only god as HE is claimed to be ;) Retconned all the ladies. What I really want to know is how big is they junk??? Is god packing heat?

Could American Jesus make a gun so big he himself could not shoot it?

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago

"God damn it, I'm back in america"

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 17 points 3 days ago

While I choose not to down vote in those types of communities because people are putting themselves out there, blanket expectations that any community should only get up votes when both types are options is toxic positivity.

[–] Pronell@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

In Jerboa, and I assume other apps, it is easy to downvote by accident while scrolling.

I still hate when a post gets a downvote and no other response, but ya gotta let it go or go mad.

Yes, I do have such a recent post.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Am jerboa user, apologies for fat fingers

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What if it's art glorifying Nazis? That deserves downvotes.

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

That's a ban.

Because your taste in music is bad and you should feel bad!

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

One person down voted a teto cover of a Spanish song I posted and I shall be forever sad

[–] cokeslutgarbage@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Slightly off topic, but im in school for massage therapy, and just took my midterm exam which involves giving massage to classmates while the teacher watches. During practice, we check in with questions like "is the pressure okay?" And the response is either "its great" "it's too much" or "I'd like more pressure". During the exam, I overheard other students saying "I'd like more pressure" and I couldn't help thinking to myself - unless someone is hurting you and you need them to lighten up, the only thing you should be saying right now while the proctor is grading is "that's perfect pressure!" Like c'mon now, do your peers a solid and say it's good if it's good, worry about the feedback details during practice time.

[–] TheSambassador@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean, isn't showing that you can respond to a change in pressure request kinda a big deal? The person receiving the massage saying, "you're not using the right pressure" shouldn't be considered a negative mark at all, but ignoring it and them needing to repeat it over and over should be bad.

Pretending your peers are doing a good job just because they're your peers doesn't do them favors, especially when they're learning something that relies on communication and responding to feedback.

Yes, you're right. This is mostly a joke based on the OP meme. It's not so serious.

Okay, but I don't think Cloudflare is going to tell me anything.

Votes are public information on Fediverse.

[–] kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you're wtf-ing about votes being public, it's an inherent and necessary part of federation, since there's no central instance that counts votes and decides the score, each instance needs to add them up - and if each instance doesn't receive the full list of voters, there's no way to stop an instance from completely lying about vote counts (they would need to create fake users to attribute the votes to, or attribute fake votes to real users they have)

[–] chaotic_ugly@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Thanks for the explanation.

I guess my only question is: what keeps someone from creating databases of who responds this way or that to this or that category or topic?

Reddit and some others were just accused of handing over to DHS the information of users who had been critical of ICE. Whether that's true or not, I can't say (but I wouldn't be surprised). Can I gather from what you've said that the DHS, or anyone really, has direct access to that information?

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 4 points 3 days ago

Nothing stops anyone from doing that - the fediverse does not claim to be a private platform and anything you post or interact with should be assumed to be public

Let them do what they want, I can't wait for them to blow up half of the universe and themselves at the same time.

Downvotes are literally one of the most, if not most, useless feature in the Fediverse. People who worry about them are ... well I'll be nice and just say that they are The Lord's Special Lambs.

But also, voting IS an art, for art's sake. And down votes are one of the many colors I use when painting an expression of a mood I wish to convey. So if I'm going to hell for my art, I'll gladly do so with pride.
