Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
I took up running for a while. "Runners high" is a very misleading term because the only thing that feels good about running is being done running
My whole life I've wanted to be a runner but goddamn... Running is ass.
Maybe one day I'll commit. Doubtful.
Cycling is much more enjoyable.
At least with cycling you get somewhere.
I know this will be unpopular but I prefer running on a treadmill. I can set my pace and get lost in an audiobook.
Cycling is much easier on the knees also.
So true, it’s mostly in your glutes.
Then you've never truly had a runners high. When I was occasionally running while I in my teens, I've had a feeling once or twice where you feel like you're flying and feel like you can go on forever. That's what "Runner's high" is I believe
Yeah it's an amazing feeling it happens when your body switches energy sources so you go from feeling tired to feeling completely rejuvenated in an instant
That's why you bring a spliff with you 😎
Once you get into it you get pretty addicted to it. Like I feel guilty if I haven't run in a couple days. And running after a stressful day of work is like magic for making the tension go away. In the summer my runs are also trail runs so that makes it a lot better.
I ran 3 miles a day for 3 months trying to get that addiction. I hated every minute of it. Finally gave it up.
Every day?! I'm not a huge fan of streak running. I've only done 2 6 mile runs this week and they both felt pretty good. First one was more a decompression run, my heart rate was too high. Second was a proper zone 2 workout and I actually feel like I have more energy afterwards.
All runners are masochists to some degree.
Random overly extrovert person walks by and waves at you. What will you do?

They came from behind, it's a surprise round.
Living in Germany: recoiling in mortified terror and someday telling my grand kids this astounding tale that happened to me once.
This is why I bicycle, it shortens the awkward interactions dramatically.
I am not an extrovert, but I try to say hello or good morning to people I encounter. After the second or third encounter many people say hello back, but some continue looking at me like I have 3 nostrils.

If you are hiking you greet everyone (unless they are in a group, then you only greet once).
If you are on a walk you give a barely perceptible nod of acknowledgement.
Get a dog, the walks become mandatory.
Then there are days when the dog has to sniff every third blade of grass...inevitably, this happens when you're short on time and trying to do a quick walk...
And then there's rain, snow, extreme cold, extreme heat....yeah walking a dog has it all!
I prefer birds. I can train them to go to the stick mounted over a garbage bin to poop, and I can still harness them up and take them out to fly around.
inevitably, this happens when you're short on time and trying to do a quick walk...
I swear, my dog knows....
Dogs have no concept of time. The walk takes as long as it takes, and the human has no idea.
Grumpy walkers for the win!
Pro tip: Get yourself a good audiobook and listen to it while walking. I regularly do extra long walks just because I want to continue listening.
Me pacing around my desk thinking about a solution to my problems 🙈
I'm a pacer when talking on a phone. Back in the days of corded phones, I got very good at repairing phones I pulled off the desk/table while pacing.
Oh my.. I feel this so badly
Oh, I just did this.
