1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

    That shit is funny

    [–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 15 minutes ago

That comment was basically Microsoft's business plan ever since like windows 8 until they made it no longer true by making windows so bad "what OS should I use" did become a topic, at least with the nerdier segment of the population.

Though on the other hand, that 90%+ segment of the population still doesn't gaf other than "why are computers so hard?" style complaints.

Even if we assumed Windows was worth using, I'm not sure I would need to explicitly recommend "use the thing that's everywhere already". If we're talking about Linux distros, we've already moved on from the standard and into the realm of other options, but the norm generally needs no advertising.

How likely are you to recommend using computer?

Hello fellow kids, I highly recommend using computer.

    [–] Captain_Baka@feddit.org 18 points 2 hours ago

Never before have I been so offended by something I one hundred percent agree with.

Do you have a few minutes to talk about our Lord and Saviour, Linus Torvalds?

The meme said Linux users, not GNU/Linux.

    [–] nkk@programming.dev 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

It also said operating systems, not kernels

    Ex-pedo? I’d half believe it.

    [–] lime@feddit.nu 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

ex-apologist. he's gone on record saying that his statements were based on ignorance and that he had talked to a child psychologist to learn more.

    [–] ulterno@programming.dev 0 points 58 minutes ago (1 children)

What kind of statements were his?

    [–] pmk@piefed.ca 1 points 40 minutes ago (1 children)

That if someone freely gives consent but is underage, it's not immoral.

    [–] ulterno@programming.dev 1 points 36 minutes ago (1 children)

    Ahh right.
Perhaps he didn't consider the kinds of mind games people can play on kids (which even other kids can), which you don't need to worry about if you are just a random guy, but do need to, if you are controlling a community/country.

    [–] lime@feddit.nu 1 points 29 minutes ago (1 children)

my theory is that he simply assumes nothing bad will happen from any situation until someone tells him otherwise. i will give him this though, he instantly changes his opinion when presented with new data.

    [–] ulterno@programming.dev 0 points 7 minutes ago

Honestly, I too had similar thoughts ~ a decade ago.
But then I looked back at my childhood, realised how much of a fool I was and how many times I was manipulated and understood how that could have worked in this context.

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

    Filthy heretic!

    [–] j4yc33@piefed.social 16 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I think if I were to spend the time analyzing my conversations over the last 6 months I would probably find I spend a lot of time having conversations about why people should explicitly never use a Windows OS.

    [–] username_1@programming.dev 13 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

So at least you would mention Windows in conversation? It's a win! Thank you, grateful (consult EULA and pay fines if you're not) customer!

    [–] j4yc33@piefed.social 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

    Oh damn, you're right!

On another note: have you spent any time considering how to install Linux on ... literally everything?

Puppy Linux will just about run on a potato.

    [–] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 0 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

    and probably like, really fast.

    all that sweet potato ram

    You mean yam?

    [–] Limerance@piefed.social 6 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

They are using the wrong kind of Linux! My kind of Linux is superior, because it’s broken in a different way and more difficult than yours.

    [–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

To be fair I wouldnβ€˜t feel comfortable recommending a specific distro to someone. At least not long term. I do recommend giving Linux a try though and Mint is a good starter to see if you can imagine using Linux full time. But I really canβ€˜t recommend using Arch to everyone. Other people have entirely different needs than I do.

I remember seeing this meme a few years ago before I started using linux, and I showed this to a buddy and we were like "yeah lmao who the fuck goes around recommending OSs to people?".

Today I think "who the fuck goes around recommending Windows to people?"

Twelve years ago, when XP released, there was legitimately a decision to be made what with nine distinct versions of the OS available. That still hasn't stopped even in the modern day. So I could see people discussing exactly which version of Win10/11 they needed and then recommending others based on their experience.

But it's sort of like the BMW that comes with a subscription to heated seats and ABS. Like, why would you subject yourselves to this kind of abuse in an OS?

I'll talk Linux installs at a party but not windows. fellers gotta have standards.

    [–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

"How likely are you to recommend putting your hand up to the elbow in this wood chipper?"

Like, if you're in the business of building PCs? I definitely understand swapping build tips with friends and colleagues. Even strictly within the "No Linux Allowed" space, there's no shortage of online tutorials and consultants recommending this or that version of Microsoft.

But Win10 is going away and Win11 is so fucking bad...

I try not to recommend Linux to everyone all the time, I’m trying very loudly.

    [–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

What timing, after seeing the news about Windows 12 yesterday, this morning I was considering starting a conversation with the researchers at work about pressuring the scientific instrument companies they buy from to support Linux. The one facility in the building that has Bruker instruments runs AlmaLinux, and they've been spared from all the pain.

    [–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 2 points 2 hours ago

How did you hear about us?

i like when doctor offices ask this question. It seems so stupid to me.

    [–] ulterno@programming.dev 0 points 59 minutes ago

When I am talking about Linux, I am not discussing my choice of OS with others.
I am discussing my hobby with others.
