Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

at this point i pretty much assume that if it's sold in flashy packaging (or the generic version of same), then it's sus

it's not the one chemical-laden ultraprocessed crap meal that kills you, it's decades of eating it every day. same as cigarettes. and like big tobacco, food corps will fight tooth and nail for deregulating, loosening rules, blocking laws, etc., so they can keep putting garbage in your food so it costs them less while they charge you more

And this is the third reason I will never buy American food ever again.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I assume you're not from the US, but it is funny to think about. 'oh darn I forgot to get eggs, gotta cross the border again brb 2h'

[–] Balaquina@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 weeks ago

I'm not from the US, but if I was I would definitely be moving towards locally raised food products and vegetable gardening.

[–] danh2os@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What's the first and the second one?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Threatening countries and economic war with tariffs.

[–] Balaquina@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 weeks ago

The first is that I will never buy an American product of any kind ever again, because I'm not going to support a country that wants to annex mine. The second is that the price is too high because of tariffs.

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

CNN is Ellison News. I don't care who they cite it's untrustworthy.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a shit article. But with nuggets:

A doctor petitioned the FDA to ban BHA in 1990, but no action had been taken until the FDA announced it would reexamine the chemical’s safety in February.

Meanwhile the food dyes RFK wanted to ban are now OK again.

And even if the FDA were informed, no way a senior FDA official would accept bribes.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't think of having 'shit nuggets' as a positive attribute, but uh..

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

There's always pristine kernals of corn...

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yea CNN and CBS shouldn’t be posted any longer as legitimate news

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

It needs to be the social stigma. I don't expect everyone in the country to instantly pick up arms and overthrow a government but for fuck sake pull the plug and just remove yourself from these places userbase. Its easier the more you do it, I promise. At least voice the voice you do have while you still have it.

Who was putting Aminitas in food? Was it some loophole thing to sell magic mushrooms legally?

[–] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Amanitas are not "magic mushrooms" in that they do not contain psilocybin, and are fully legal, just heavily stigmatized. I've tried them and found them to be the single greatest substance I've taken for anxiety, but I've stopped taking them because I have doubts about their safety. Chubby Emu on youtube has an episode about a guy who died after taking them, for example.

So if you are inclined to try them, do your research first. Extensively. And keep in mind that even the science on these fungi is still far from complete.

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've found them in the wild but wouldn't dare eat them. I hear you're supposed to peal the skin off the top and smoke it, but I'm not doing that either.

[–] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

As far as getting them in the wild, you just have to be sure to forage where the air and soil is free from pollutants (as far as that is feasible anyway), then clean and dehydrate them.

As far as safety goes, the conventional wisdom is that you want to decarboxylate them. If I recall, there are two main active ingredients in amanitas: muscimol, and ibotenic acid. It's believed that one of these is safe, and the other not so much. But the whole thing really isn't very clear, and we certainly don't have any reliable long term data on habitual use. Anyway, the process just involves simmering them in a solution of water and citric acid, which converts the unsafe substance into the safe one.

And of course dose is a large part of safety.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wait where can I get these hallucinatory foodstuffs. Amanitas food? Really? That sounds pretty bullshit.

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Probably make you shit through the eye of a needle.

Free Market Small Government Deregulikashun YEE-HAW!

[–] WesternInfidels@feddit.online 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The EWG promoted vaccine/autism links at one point. I'm not suggesting that it's worthless, but it's not infallible.

This CNN article pretty much says that maybe if we love them enough, the president and the HHS secretary will save us from the machinations of the evil food empire, not by getting the FDA to function, but by "sweeping reform."

The truth becomes more expensive every day.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I mean, I half agree with the reporting. I have an unusual allergy. It does not show up on the list of allergens that they list because like, I've met three people my entire life who share my allergy and I've met a lot of people. It sometimes shows up in bouillon and some places include bouillon as an ingredient. And then just list "spices". Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck I hate that, I don't want to get sick just because you are ashamed you don't make your own broth. So yeah, even if I don't agree with their arguments, I agree with their conclusion that even the tiniest ingredient needs to be listed.

Re: the bull testicles, do they come pre-seperated from the bull or do I need to really upgrade my medical and dental insurance first?

[–] WesternInfidels@feddit.online 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

"The only way to be sure your bull testicles are free-range organic whole food goodness is to raise the bulls yourself, which is why we're procuring 1,000 male calves for 4H clubs around the nation" -- RFK jr., probably
