We’ve been seeing frequent spam waves of targeted harassment from accounts made on programming.dev over the course of several weeks, which has among other unacceptable things contained transphobia, obscene pictures of animals, calling for the victim to commit suicide, and other hateful rhetoric.

For these reasons we are defederating from programming.dev. We may refederate in the future if we have reason to believe there will be no further problems like these from their instance.

Edit: I've spoken with the admins there and I may refederate once I have more details on their application system. To be clear they don't support anything posted by these accounts and are deleting them as they are detected.

Edit: We've refedereted.

Good job mods! Appreciate you protecting this community!

Dang. I'd always used programming.dev as a verification instance to ensure my posts were migrating across the fed. It's a shame to lose them as a resource.

( ( looks at modlog... ) )

Well ok then. No regrets here.

How can you see another community's modlog?

[–] cows_are_underrated@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You can go to programming.dev/modlog

[–] GalacticSushi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

That seems to show every insurance's modlog, not just programming.dev

Have you tried talking to the admins first?

I do intend to send them a DM soon, but defederation happened first so we don't have to deal with the harassment accounts and so users don't have to be exposed to all the abuse.

AFAIK the only active admin (who is also the main admin account) was already instance banned from Blahaj for transphobia - so there wasn't an easy way to talk to the admin in the first place ...

Defederation is not punishment, nor is it permanent. It is a reaction of self defense and can be reversed later.

Same on our instance. It's ridiculous

Based blahaj admins

[–] germanatlas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 month ago

Pretty disappointing from p devs side

[–] randamumaki@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 month ago

Well done.

Please continue the good work you're doing to keep the community safe from these trolls until the admins on that server can find a way to keep them out.

Let us hope the solution is easy to implement on their end so they don't suffer unnecessary sleepless nights over it.

May we soon see them refederated. :)

dang

I'll miss the programmer memes but that's the smallest price to pay for community safety

Thanks, admins!

Hello, its none of my business, but I wouldn't refederate just because the admins seem cool. They might be 'disavowing' rather than giving an actual apology.

[–] Filetternavn@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 month ago

And if the issue isn't fixed, then they can be defederared again. None of this is permanent

[–] EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

If we've defederated with them, then how come I can still see posts at lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/opensource@programming.dev?

[–] will_steal_your_username@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Defederation means nothing new is sent or received between the defederated servers. Anything old remains.
