Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Trump himself appeared to echo that sentiment when he acknowledged the stakes at the onset of the operation, saying "the lives of courageous American heroes may be lost." "But we're doing this not for now, we're doing this for the future, and it is a noble mission," Trump said in a video address announcing the start of major combat operations.

Did they swap him out for Biden when we weren't looking? Holy shit. brump

"Your lives may be lost, but that's a risk I'm willing to take" farquaad-point

"Operation Epic Fury"

Trump must have loved that.

Evil pro-military think tanks are - of course - evil. But I hate "peace" think tanks even more. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a great example. They are just as ghoulish but they add lies about peace.

Trump called on Iranians to topple the government but that is easier said than done, said Nicole Grajewski with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "The Iranian opposition is pretty fragmented. It's unclear what the population is willing to do in terms of rising up," Grajewski said.

If there is a power vacuum, it's going to be filled by the people with the most guns, as per usual.

During the height of the genocide in Gaza - one of MSNBC's go-to guys was a guy at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. I hate watched him. His appearances were like something out of seventh-rate fiction. A "peace" guy spewing nonsense comments in defense of an apartheid state literally committing genocide in real time. I bookmarked him because I'm super-terrible at names: Aaron David Miller.

I ended up having to stop watching whenever he was on. You can only hate-doing something if there's at least a minimal level of amusement. But as the genocide dragged on - I couldn't watch anybody like him with any sense of amusement at all. Instead [redacted].

Months later because it was destroying my soul - I entirely stopped watching cable tv news coverage of the genocide. We have new "peace" related horrors so I'm sure MS NOW will choose a couple of go-to "peace" ghouls to pontificate the wonders of stuff like regime change. It hardly matters if Miller is one of the ghouls or not. They're all basically the same. I wonder how many times I can hate watch them before - again - [redacted].

I'm sure you don't need someone parenting you about this, but taking a step back is more than valid. Its necessary. It feels like shit - I'm sure the people of Gaza wish they could 'tune out the news', but there's no use wrecking your mental health either.

global thermonuclear exchange is also "high risk, high reward" as a gamble.

like maybe you nuke everybody and they all just capitulate and then earth is renamed "the united states" and everybody loves you for finally unifying the planet under one nation.

alternatively, maybe 6 billion people die and the luckiest suits get to live in a cave in west virginia for a few years, arguing over who gets the last Lasagna MREs before the water filtration fails and the toilets clog.

He does own casinos. But he's not the house in this case.

Is it easier to bankrupt a casino or a country?

We're about to find out in 2 weeks I guess
