MODERATORS

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night toggled between being remarkably dull and profoundly racist. During a screed against undocumented immigrants, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) shouted at Trump, yelling, “You have killed Americans,” and “You should be ashamed.”

The confrontation began after Trump scolded Democrats for not standing and applauding during a portion of his speech during which he claimed that the “first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

“You should be ashamed of yourself, not standing up,” Trump said to Democrats in the audience, as the rest of the room rose to their feet and applauded for over a minute. “That is why I’m also asking you to end deadly sanctuary cities that protect the criminals,” he continued. As he spoke, Omar could be heard shouting from the gallery, “You have killed Americans,” and “You should be ashamed,” while jabbing her finger in Trump’s direction. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), seated next to Omar wearing a pin that read “Release the Files,” a reference to still-unreleased Epstein files, also briefly yelled something in the direction of the dais.

ICE and Border Patrol agents killed two people in Minnesota, the state Omar represents: Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, both of whose executions were captured on video. Omar’s guests for the State of the Union were four constituents from Minnesota who were impacted by ICE’s brutal raid on the state. They include Aliya Rahman, a Minneapolis woman and United States citizen who was dragged from her car and violently arrested in mid-January. Thus far, at least eight people have died nationwide this year at the hands of ICE agents or in ICE custody.

Every Democrat should have done something to get kicked out

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

Once again, the Dems blew their opportunity. The SOTU used to be a polite affair, until MAGAs started yelling stuff at Obama. When MAGAs start getting all verklempt about last night's speech, they should be reminded of Boobert and MTG constantly hollering through every speech by a Democrat. They started this.

So why didn't the Dems answer the Traitors chanting "USA, USA" by chanting "Epstein Files, Epstein Files" over and over? When he claimed that the streets were safer, they should have chanted "Murderer, Murderer." When he challenged them to stand up, they should have chanted "Pedophile, Pedophile." And they should have chanted "Liar, Liar" every time he told another lie. THAT would be leadership. MAGA intendS to use film of the Dems just sitting there why he tries to create a gotcha moment (he thought he could duplicate the moment they asked Bondi to face the Epstein victims), so could you imagine if that clip was ruined by all the Dems chanting "Pedophile, Pedophile?" That would have been beautiful.

But Dems are STILL obsessed with being polite to people who are accurately described as traitors, corrupt, racist, mysoginist, violent, stupid, incompetent, and pedophiles. They don't have to be polite to them, and pretend any of their nonsense is worth considering.

MAGA are vicious criminals, domestic terrorists, and the greatest National Security Threat this nation's has faced since the Civil War. They deserve to be excoriated at every opportunity. Elected Democratic should demonstrate a visceral disgust with EVERYTHING that MAGA does, and make it clear to the American people that their behavior is unacceptable, and those who support and participate in it should be shunned by polite society.

MAGA represents only about 30% of society, so the other 70% should be encouraged to turn on them, as harshly as possible. Fire them from their jobs, exclude them from neighborhood activities, shun them at church, make them feel rejected, and unwelcome EVERYWHERE. They are traitors and pedophiles, and we don't have to pretend they aren't. I'm fact, we should remind them to their faces how disgusting we think they are.

Humans are herd animals, and MAGAs are more than most. Cut them from the herd, and most of them will quit MAGA before they lose their herd.

Stop being polite to Evil.

Because Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are the leaders. Need to get those spineless critters out.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

1000%. It's time for the MAGA comedy act of Schmuck & Jeffries to get the hook, and be dragged off-stage. We need Warriors leading us, not cowardly putzes.

While I applaud her bring it out on the house floor and making it public, I wonder at the general impact apart from making Trump face his responsibly directly and publicly.

For those of you who can stand it, I'd suggest reading what the conservative side is portraying it as. I say this as around 40% of the voting public seems to swallow this without question. They portray Minnesota as:

The theft of billions of dollars in welfare payments in Minnesota by primarily Somali criminals became an overnight political liability for Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and other state officials who, at best, ignored the problem. Trump has designated Vice President JD Vance to lead the fraud investigation; you can be sure that Democrat-run states like California and New York will be in the crosshairs.

So no mention of the killing, among the many other things that the guardian article did discuss.

It makes me wonder what the swing voters read and believe.

[–] Doubleohdonut@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

I mean it says right there that they're only targeting "Democrat-run" states, and they don't seem to have any evidence of the alleged crimes, or they'd be talking about how other states are impacted too.

To read this and not see how biased and one-sided it is? You'd have to be pretty deep down the rabbit hole, cause it's not like they're trying hard to hide it.

In the Renee Good case, 61% of voters say the shooting was unjustified, while 27% say it was.

In the shooting of Alex Pretti, 65% say the shooting was not justified, while 16% say it was.

As previously reported, the Department of Homeland Security blocked state investigators from the scene of the Pretti shooting and shut them out of the investigation of the Good shooting.

Poll results show that 72% of voters believe the state should be allowed to investigate the shootings independently from the federal government.

https://kstp.com/kstp-news/top-news/kstp-surveyusa-poll-results-most-voters-say-good-pretti-shootings-were-unjustified/ (arc)

Also, same poll elsewhere showed more people concerned about taxes and healthcare than fraud in government spending, so I think the racist bullshit machines are losing their effectiveness as affordability becomes as undeniable as the murders of Pretti and Good are.

ICE and Border Patrol agents killed two people in Minnesota, the state Omar represents: Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, both of whose executions were captured on video.

They've killed many more USians than just these two white ones (not saying that to diminish their killings but to point out that it only ever seems important when it's white folks.

[–] Xbeam@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Its not because they are white. Its because we have video of those two murders.

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 5 points 2 hours ago

And they were in her district.

[–] Ava@piefed.blahaj.zone 12 points 5 hours ago

To my knowledge, those two are the only citizens known to have been killed in her district though. Which y'know. Is what the article is talking about in this particular instance.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) shouted at Trump, yelling, “You have killed Americans,” and “You should be ~~ashamed~~ be in jail.”

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 16 points 8 hours ago (5 children)

I would have preferred if the Dems just held up signs in silence like “You killed Alex Pretti” and “You killed Renée Good“ and “Release the Epstein files”. Yelling at him just plays into Republican hands and makes these congresspeople look like MTG or Bobert.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 27 points 6 hours ago

Politeness and going high have already failed miserably. People want to see someone speak out for them, not hold signs and pat themselves on the back.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I disagree entirely, the entire party should be so bold as to yell.

[–] stormeuh@lemmy.world 9 points 4 hours ago

Yes, 100%, the Democrats should have been taking turns disrupting until thrown out. Fuck respect for these institutions, it's not like the Republicans are showing them any respect for institutions, with their executive branch constantly breaking laws.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 15 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

They did the signs last year and were criticized for that strategy too. Point the finger where it belongs.

[–] ClownStatue@piefed.social 6 points 3 hours ago

Anything they do to interrupt the speech will be criticized. That should never be a metric in deciding how to protest. Effective protest must be disruptive.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 16 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Should have just boycotted like AOC did.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 30 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

One congressperson standing up and walking out every five minutes would have made a nice statement as well.

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 21 points 7 hours ago

Maybe every 8 minutes because thats how long Renee Good was alive between being shot and when ICE finally allowed her to be seen by medical professionals.
