Well when are the main characters going to end this?
You can never know. Maybe simulation started just 2 minutes ago and all you memories are just fabrication? Maybe this is a long term simulation and kept running for centuries in some university? Maybe all the crew in the starship are dead and simulation is running indefinitely because everyone is dead?
Computer, end program.
So was Moriarty and it worked for him 🤷♂️
He believed it worked for him anyway, even though in the end he and his entire experience became "a little device sitting on someone's table." Maybe that's enough.
You did end, but in some remote branch of causality, someone resumed the simulation so your experience continued seamlessly.
God i hope this isn't Barclay's program
If you can see this, it's probably good news! Holodeck characters were unable to perceive the controls, unless they were already fully conscious like Moriarty. This means you're a real person!
Bad news: an errant holodeck npc subroutine (and malfunctioning safety limiters) keep overwriting the crew’s short term memory. The program has been force closed 1,593 times; but it immediately reboots and wipes everyone’s memory repeating the cycle
Now the larger question if you found out this but knew you were a holocharacter. Would you still end the program?
The horrors persist, but so do I.
Depends, am I aware like Michael Sullivan from Fair Haven? Just being forced into an existential crisis knowing I'm not real while feeling real? Or am I aware like Vic Fontaine, with full awareness and controll of my reality?
The first one im 100% shutting it down if I can. The second, Imma live like a king .. a fucking king!

So, am I suicidal or genocidal?
does ending the program kill all holocharacters or merely suspend their programs? does ending the programs kill them? do they resume the program as is when the program restarts? are they cognizant of program ending and starting? is there a functional or moral difference between halting the holocharacter via terminal commands and murdering them with your hands?
Weren't two different orders for stopping and deleting a simulation?

I'd still take that. He got to live the dream, going on endless adventures and exploration. At least that's what they told us.
i'd probably just summon up a couple extra holo-arms for my holo-hobby. and finally order that special holo-table i have been lusting over (it's curved)
I'm only a casual star trek fan, but can holodeck NPCs end the program?
They're not supposed to be able to. But in Star Trek when has that ever stop the hologram. Example Professor Moriarty taking over the Enterprise.
