Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

That isn't a real name. You can't tell me that this is a real name. Though "Wesley Dingus" does sound like the sort of person people would call an "underwear sniffer" so I suppose it is nominative determinism or something.

are there any americans in politics who aren't child molesters

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 17 points 20 hours ago

It's so weird because the guy presumably had a wife omand children. Otherwise why the fuck would a minor be in his house? Which means he had wife panties to sniff to his heart's content. God gives gold to fools. Not only that but women sell used panties as well for a lot cheaper than lawyer fees.

Me, personally? I wouldn't have done that.

Fortunately for Mr. Dingus, this probably won't go anywhere. I imagine his lawyers will argue that he had a reasonable expectation of privacy within his own home, and that as the property owner he did not consent to recording equipment being installed. The case will be dismissed, headlines will read "DINGUS IS INNOCENT!" and nobody will dig any deeper than that, ever.

Justice prevails again. pain

Hard to take the article seriously with that name "A deputy later contacted Dingus and arranged a meeting, but the conversation did not happen after his attorney advised canceling it, local news outlet WKYC reported. Authorities arrested Dingus nearly a month later, an action that took place on 13 February. Dingus appeared in court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty. He was released after posting 10% of a $10,000 bond. Judge Michael Kemerer required him to wear a GPS monitor and barred him from contacting the accuser. Deputies forwarded the case to a local prosecutor’s office on 26 January. After consulting with a member of that office, deputies prepared two court summonses charging Dingus with voyeurism, according to Cleveland19. Those summonses were then delivered to Dingus. Dingus, who is a registered Republican according to public voter records, became mayor of Butler in 2022. Then mayor Joseph Stallard resigned, and Dingus was elevated to the vacant post from his role as council president. Dingus was soon after elected to a full term after receiving 199 votes from the village’s fewer than 1,000 residents."

Village Dingus kelly

[–] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 5 points 18 hours ago

http://www.villageofbutler.com/

although that website says hes a council member, so they probably dont update it. in any case, pretty much anything in Ohio called a "village" is just a scam so a handful of people can have full time govt jobs where they don't do shit.

Whomst amongst mayors?

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 1 day ago (4 children)

*underage teen girl who was “staying at his residence” (emphasis mine)

And while I think he should face the full penalty of the law, why do prosecutors even bother considering the president has done the same and worse? If the law is not applied evenly, it loses its moral authority. And without moral authority, people cannot be expected to follow the law at all. Thus, while what the mayor in this case did was morally reprehensible, it was not morally illegal, since the law is exempting politicians. Therefore, the law must be applied equally to all (this is what is meant by justice being blind) for it to be morally applied to anyone.

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 16 points 18 hours ago

Hippity hoppity, the law doesn't protect people, only property

Maybe if that underage girl would pull herself up by her bootstraps and become a job creator she could get some legal restitution. But if she had bootstraps, fuckin' Dingus would just sniff those too.

[–] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 9 points 18 hours ago

Trump is rich, this guy is not. It tracks with history that they get different penalties.

[–] someone@hexbear.net 16 points 21 hours ago

since the law is exempting politicians

But only politicians who toe the capitalism line. If this guy had advocated for living wages instead of sniffing underwear, he'd probably have a mysterious car accident.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 2 points 14 hours ago

If the law is not applied evenly, it loses its moral authority.

The law is made by the dominant class, for the dominant class. All law enforcement is selective law enforcement, and class always plays in to the application of state "justice".
