This headline is bullshit. He isn't cutting anything. If you look at the actual budget proposal (https://www.nyc.gov/assets/omb/downloads/pdf/feb26/perc2-26.pdf) and take a look at page 43 (Police Department totals), you'll see that the budget proposal for 2026 (as approved by the last mayor) is $6,162,977,467 and the proposed budget for 2027 (as approved by Mamdani) is $6,400,777,947, which is in fact a budget growth of $237 million!

He is just not growing it by as much as the previous mayor had wanted, and people are calling that a cut (the people calling it a cut are Fox News, by the way, who want to portray this loser who is actually not anti-cop as some evil socialist cutting police budgets). Why anyone here would read Fox at face value is beyond me.

The NYPD budget is the most obvious budget to cut in order to make social programs that improve people's lives.

Improving lives will reduce crime and NYPD will be required less anyway. It's an extremely obvious shift of priorities to make. Instead of treating the symptoms with that money it can be used to treat the causes.

This is the natural and obvious progression of the state withering away that Marx talked about too. Shifting the state resources from symptom treatment to cause treatment reduces the state.
