LemmyNSFW was the perfect example of a single subject instance. So much so that it was the only NSFW instance and another one is needed
Sounds like a big opportunity if anybody ever wanted to start up and run a big, popular instance...
Though it might be a bit of a nightmare to moderate.
I suspect the bandwidth and storage costs are considerably higher than your average instance as well.
Plus the additional crap you have to deal with. I wouldn't be surprised if the mods and admins of Lemmy.NSFW had to deal with a lot of CSAM
I remember that was an issue discussed in the first days, not sure how big of a problem after that though.
We need more than just one big instance, we should have many.
There was another one once, pornlemmy. Not sure what killed it, but it also no longer exists.
I just migrated my comms to Reddthat and Piefed.zip (!NikkeNSFW@reddthat.com and !BigAnimeTiddies@piefed.zip).
From reading their rules, they don't prohibit NSFW content.
We should use the death of LemmyNSFW as reminder to spread communities across as many instances as possible so something like this won't happen again at the same scale.
Because right now, if Lemmy.World goes down, then we're absolutely fucked.

If we all move to different instances though it's going to be hard for people to find their niches. We might need a porn community aggregator community.

I actually thought your instance was dead for a while. Kind of funny finding out it's still around on a post about another instance disappearing.
I'm just playing around with the thought of it at the moment, so don't anybody get their hopes up, but here are ~~a question~~ three questions.
I have 1Gbps bandwidth and about 4TB of storage to contribute with.
- would people be more interested in an NSFW meme community or rather just a porn sharing one - regardless of orientation?
- can one person run a community alone or is it not feasible - referring to how quick one has to be to act on infractions?
- are there legal aspects to consider if I were to setup an NSFW community? As in, for instance, would I be liable if people posted illegal content - considering that I'm hosting?
If you're otherwise tech savvy, the legal ramifications (and preventing them) are probably the biggest headache. It depends on where you are, but where I'm at, the owner of the server is responsible for everything on it.
There likely are tools which scan for naughty stuff and remove it, but I don't know the specifics.
Right, I was afraid of that. Also, while maybe it's the only feasible option for a hobby/volunteer project, automoderation has often ruined the fun of some subs over at Reddit when I was still using it.
It's in a different category than an automod bot IMO. It would basically be looking for the worst-of-the-worst highly illegal "you know it when you see it" type content and making sure it never reaches your storage or the instance. There would of course be the occasional false positives and things that slip through, which would have to be reported and dealt with on a case by case basis. That is just one way to do it though.
Thanks for the input! :) I'm starting to really appreciate (more than otherwise) those that do contribute with hardware and instance hosting.
Regarding question one, lemmynsfw had at least one meme community.

Hmm... Interesting! But then, what if there is a matter/post that needs immediate attention (CSAM, revenge porn, what have you...) and action or else the owner of the server faces legal actions? If I'm away at work or whatever, can't that be tricky?
Yeah I can't say. Lemmynsfw didn't have a bot but you could have a bot that removes anything with that kind of flag until a human reviews it.

Looking at Lemmy Explorer, and using the "Only Show NSFW" filter, it looks like it's pretty much just Lemmy.world at the moment.
I browsed a few sidebars and these instances didn't rule out NSFW: lemmy.org, lemmings.world, reddthat, lemmy.blahaj.zone, hilariouschaos, and of course Lemmy.world.
Ideally the priority would be one that doesn't require email verification.

I didn't even realize it had died. Something if that's why I've been seeing more porn crop up between regular posts in my "normal" Lemmy lately.
Anyone know why NSFW died? Not enough money, admins, or did somebody take it out?
There was a post from one of the admins saying that the other admin was the only person with server access and has gone mia. Apparently one admin did setup and rented the sever space to host and the other was responsible for day to day maintenance. They didn't know why the admin with server access had stopped responding to their messages.
Oh. That sounds not good for lot of potential reasons
