Canada paid for the entire construction and will be giving 10% of the toll revenue to the US until the 90% cut of tolls pays for the construction cost, at which point the tolls will be split 50/50. The ownership of the bridge is equally split.

It's a ludicrously good deal for the US already. This likely comes down to the billionaire Republican private owner of the only other, old-ass bridge wanting to stall this one opening so he doesn't have to lower his own tolls.

Still though, burgerland got a free fucking bridge and finding a way to fuck it up.

Blocking a bridge named after Mr. Hockey in a city who’s nickname is Hockeytown, in the largest city in a vital swing state is going to really hurt republicans, both is state and federal races.

No he’s actually right. President Xi told me personally that China will eliminate ice hockey once and for all

I had hoped they were going for football, but i'm not gonna be picky.

A bridge for which Canada footed the entire $5.7 billion bill, and is jointly owned along with the US.

How tf does it cost almost 6 BILLION to build a bridge? What, is it make of Gold-plated Bitcoin?

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 5 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 35 minutes ago)

Cynical me thinks that, since they will keep the most of tolls collected until the building cost paid back, it was in their best interest to tack on a few zeroes to it.

Also the other Detroit-Windsor bridge is privately owned for some fucking reason, and it's owner Matty Moroun (rot in piss bozo packwatch) fought to stop the Gordie Howe bridge from being built because he didn't want to lose his monopoly.

Where’s that meme of the bro visited his friend cinematic universe characters where one of them just shotguns himself for no reason?

Is there a page in Kapital where it talks about how capitalist leaders are adult children?

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 9 points 8 hours ago

There's a comment Engels makes in Socialism: Utopian and Scientific that Calvinism is the perfect religion for capitalism because it's based on the idea that who is saved and who is damned has nothing to do with human agency, it's just decided by a higher power, which is rather like how the market works. While I don't entirely agree with his assessment, it's definitely funny.

Well, see, under capitalism, you don't have to be smart, or good at running anything, to get into power, you just have to have capital, and most capitalists don't earn the capital they own in any meaningful way. I'm putting it a lot more concisely and crudely than Marx did, but that's the short of it.

How do you set up your comments to add the stuff at the end? I've seen it a few times.

[–] MayoPete@hexbear.net 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

And here I thought they were copy-pasting these every time as a bit

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe? Idk I thought it was automated.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, mine's not automatic. The standard cat one might be, IDK, I've only seen one kitty do it and she seems like the type to paste it in every time for the bit.
