I am happy to see them earn light treatment and maybe even an ounce of respect against all odds, but that is their mountain to climb.

This is worth at least a PS4 in his room

rat-salute to everyone involved in maintaining and operating Jmail, it's so well-executed. I'm amazed it exists at all.

But isn't Vercel fascist? I thought I've read that on Lemmy/hexbear before

yeah I feel like taking free money from this guy or his company is a bad idea for a project's independence. It's bad enough that they've been hosting it on this guy's cloud service.

You can't accept anything for free without compromising it. That's how the entire NGO world works.

Not paying 50k a month definitely beats paying 50k month.

Cloud service providers give away their service for free to non-commercial projects and startups all the time for marketing purposes. I wouldn't read too much into it.

But yeah best to still look for hosting alternatives.

yeah the dude is definitely doing it mostly for advertising purposes for his company (and personal reputation).

$1 per thousand pageviews seems really fucking high, no? Feels like Vercel is ripping this person off

[–] Moidialectica@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

That is because vercel IS ripping you off, it's about 4 to 5 times more expensive minimum compared to a VPS

Your math is off by 10x. $45,000 divided by 450,000,000 is $1 per 10,000 page views ie $0.10 per thousand. Also you should consider that website is hosting files that are fairly big. If the page size average 1MB, then that would be $0.10 per gigabyte of traffic. If page size average 2MB, then that would be $0.05 per gigabyte.

I don't know what rates usually would be considered fair.

Also the website was launched 3 months ago and it seems like he is saying that the website has had 450m in total. The bill would be for the current month probably? I would think most of the traffic came in the last month, but some of the traffic would have been on a different billing cycle.

Without more data, this is all speculation.
