Usually these bills follow current events, what’s prompting this one?

Probably trying to get ahead of any more would be Luigis

I mean, it seems a little late. I guess it could coincide with government acceptance of ai for policing and many ai service providers fishing around for contracts now that subscription based stuff sold directly to individuals seems to have plateaued.

I guess we’ll just see what 3d printed gun crime “happens” to occur as this legislation advances.

Preface: I am really stupid.

Isn't a bullet fired by a pin pressing into it? Banning 3d printing stops the easiest, white collar office worker type way to launch a projectile. But there's plenty of pipes and nails and duct tape in every hardware store.

It's so silly to worry about 3d printed firearms when lathes exist.

[–] Runcible@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

lathes are much more complicated to use than printers. The reason this confuses me is that there's not a lot of real barriers to getting a gun if you want one.

CNC lathes are definitely less complex than 3D printers. They operate in 2 dimensions and as a result the G-Code is simple enough to write by hand in many cases (while there is NO practical way to program a 3D printer without CAM software). They're just a lot more expensive than an Ender 3.

You can get mired in selecting appropriate tooling and work holding, but there are a million things which can go wrong with a 3D print also. 3D printers typically don't eject projectiles in case of an operator/programmer mistake though.

The only thing that makes 3D printing seem simple is that the slicers are really damn good, to the point of providing a better experience than commercial CAM software.

Yes, this is what my claim was based on. Also I find selecting tooling to be much more complex than it initially seems and it is incredibly significant.

cnc is much more involved and expensive to have though.

Step Away Grom The 3D Printer Of Heaven

Modern laws trying to catch up and close a Pandora's box lol. Files, software, and knowledge base is all already out there, infinitely mirrored across the internet. It's another clear example that our governmental system is beyond outdated for the modern era. It's known that government beaurocracy responds slowly, but the remaining free elements of the Internet will only ever outpace these systems.

My printer is air gapped for this and other reasons, like Bambu Labs locking their hardware. It's a matter of time before other printer companies do the same.

They want you to send everything you've ever designed over to some random server so it can be checked first by proper authorities like Bill Gates...hold on. Wait. Its gonna be a few days he's raping some underaged people. Be patient. Okay good, now you can print your articulated dragon and make some money selling it!

Oh by the way our new AI can design totally rad articulated dragons now! And car doors, engines, blenders, chips, you name it! Its magic! Oh we spent a lot of money training our AI manually. We didn't just train it on all the designs we purchased from the gun control checking company... Cuz that's us too! LOL.

[–] Runcible@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

trusting an AI designed engine isn't really any more foolish than trusting the engine design of any random person with a printer

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Tell that to the translators with no job. So long as it doesn't have to invent anything of its own AI can be made to copy almost anything.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 day ago

Machine translation still isn't good enough to actually replace human translators. The problem is that people higher up decided that the chatbots were good enough and were willing to accept an inferior translation for the sake of cutting labor costs.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

its probably wise to do the opposite of what they want us to

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I see great deals for used enders on Facebook marketplace all the time, for those looking to get started cheap

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 day ago

they can also be built from metal rods, servo motors and arduinos you could find in any hardware store.

in case they are ever actually banned.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 3 points 21 hours ago

wait I'm confused how can a 3D printer have a miscarriage
