90s/early 2000s Civics were great. Comfortable ride and well maintainable. WTF is mom on about here, an ‘04 Civic is a great car.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I dunno. My mom was in a wreck with one and bit off her bottom lip when she hit the steering wheel because the air bags didn’t go off. We later found out that was a surprisingly common problem for that model year.

[–] Darkenfolk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 44 minutes ago

Damn, can they reattach stuff when something like that happens?

[–] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Never been in one but they definitely seem nice. driving any 90s/2000s sedan would definitely make me like a date better, especially given how many people I know drive horrible modern SUVs

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

Definitely. I miss driving sedans and small hatchbacks, up until a few years ago they’re all I’d ever driven.

I currently have a Kia Sportage only because I moved to a rural area and needed something that could deal with country roads and off-road. Otherwise I’d still be driving my old ‘07 Accent, that thing gave me zero problems in well over 100k miles.

[–] officermike@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I sometimes miss my '01. Don't miss the leaking taillight seals causing humidity problems.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

My '10 Versa's having the same humidity problems from so many rear end collisions. The cabin smells so moldy and nothing seems to work. It's a shame really because that thing can drive for another 100k miles easily.

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

Get some of these and it should take care of the moisture issues. One should last at least 3-4 months. Replace as needed. Then just find some kind of fabric cleaner and air freshener and you should be good to go.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 17 hours ago

Oh it's worse than that. The rainy season just ended and for a long while I could hear water sloshing around in the undercarriage by braking too hard. It's not something than can be easily fixed with some dessicant at this point. I sprayed the shit out of the cabin with room deodorant and left the windows open for a while. It helps a little but it's like coating shit with sugar.

What's wrong with a Civic?

[–] BorgDrone@feddit.nl 18 points 18 hours ago (8 children)

Are ‘muricans really this obsessed with cars that the model or car you drive affects your dating prospects?

[–] redhorsejacket@lemmy.world 3 points 57 minutes ago (1 children)

Are you really so arrogant as to believe that perception of socio-economic class is exclusively an American consideration when it comes to dating?

[–] BorgDrone@feddit.nl 2 points 44 minutes ago

No, but the fact that a car is seen as an indication of socio-economic class is.

Plenty of people who drive really nice cars who are broke as fuck and plenty of people who could easily afford a luxury car who drive a 20 year old piece of junk.

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 hour ago

Only for shallow morons

[–] whiskers165@lemmy.ml 12 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Yes and it cuts both ways. Prior to transition when I was driving an Infiniti I got female attention but driving beat up Hyundais and Fords the only attention I got was from the police, like driving around with a sign that says, "pull me over".

Post transition my life circumstances are much better but the cars affect my dating prospects totally differently. Driving a brand new performance model EV in 2022 I had at least two dates where the guy would lose all interest in me once they saw I was driving a car that costed several times their annual income.

You could literally see all interest melt off their face, "my car is the white sedan, can you drop me off there?"

Immediate flip from being warm and engaged to this cold, "gtfo out of my Nissan" vibe

You can't have a shitty car as a man and you can't have a nicer car as a trans woman

Sounds like you dodged at least 2 bullets.

Wait "performance model EV" wasn't a Tesla, was it? They may have been in fear for their lives.

[–] ratel@mander.xyz 14 points 18 hours ago

Decades of propaganda by the auto industry, especially through cinema and TV, has programmed people to think that if you don't have a nice car you won't get laid.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 points 13 hours ago

Yes, but mostly if you're trying to attract men.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago

It's less about the car specifically as it is about what the car says about your level of wealth and spending habits

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

It’s a class war thing more than anything. Cops will pick on you more if you drive certain models of cars or a car that’s a total clunker with a busted window that’s taped up. Most people here don’t really care what you drive in the dating world unless you come from a wealthier background and are a snooty dick about it.

[–] wideopenarms@hexbear.net 1 points 13 hours ago

Sorta related, but I live outside of America without a car or any intention to get one now - dating like this would be impossible in America.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 17 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

Those are some nice fat cookies.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 9 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

They don't even look baked

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

meema needs to learn how to bake

[–] Malgas@beehaw.org 3 points 17 hours ago

They look suspiciously unbaked to me.

[–] proudblond@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I know right? I’m desperate for the recipe

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago
  1. Cookie dough

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

That's a classic car by today's standards

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 5 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

a lot of street cred too, depending on which 99 nissan you are driving.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I forgot straight people exist and was confused why a 2004 Honda Civic would be a problem

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 24 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Unfortunately classism is ever prevalent amongst us queers too. Typically more tolerant though which is nice.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

a 2004 Honda Civic is like a personal green flag for me, it's actually hard to wrap my head around that being a bad thing

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

You live in an appearance obsessed fantasy world full of people who say that "YouTuber" and "Influencer" are their #1 career choices.

Sensible people don't see anything wrong with a Civic.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I also realized if OOP is a man, that sometimes women will judge men on their financial status because the traditional path assumes "the woman" will need to depend on "the man" financially as a stay-at-home mom, and so a desirable man to a traditional, straight woman is usually a wealthy man.

Since I'm a gay woman and I accidentally assumed OOP was also a gay woman, I found it really confusing why she was worried the girl she is going out on a date would judge her for her old but reliable car.

The whole meme makes more sense to me with OOP being a straight man 😅

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (2 children)

My ex and I were joking about that. I asked her what kind of car would instantly cause her to nope out if someone came to pick her up... "PT Cruiser." No hesitation.

I am inclined to agree.

As for the "assumed OOP" thing - we all do that, I think. I know I do constantly and have to check myself, even though I think it's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. That is, of course, as long as we can all agree about PT Cruisers. ;)

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I think a Hummer would give me the ick faster; I feel like a PT Cruiser is ugly and poor taste, but I would at least find out if like they inherited the car or someone gifted them the car before nopeing out, whereas a Hummer wouldn't probably get that level of benefit of the doubt, I would be looking for the quickest opportunity to nope.

I think I would also feel that way about Corvettes and certain other luxury cars. BMW is also a red flag. Lexus is borderline.

But yeah, I'm also not a typical person who actually went on dates or participated in much courting. At some point it was my goal to never have a romantic partner, and I see it as a fluke (even a failure) that someone found me anyway.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Sometimes a joke is just a joke. I get your meaning.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 22 minutes ago* (last edited 21 minutes ago)

oh, I'm dumb then, oops 😝

[–] quips@slrpnk.net 1 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Why its just a car? The only red flag with a car I could think of is like a super expensive or impractical choice. Why would you judge a pt cruiser? Very reasonable car.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 20 minutes ago

They're not the only person who thinks a PT Cruiser is poor taste ...

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Whats impractical? Like a giant pickup or '60 mg mga or similar era italian sports car you need to carry special order parts in the trunk in case it breaks down? 20 year old sports bike?

[–] legopika@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I'll judge over the extended swingarm

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 23 minutes ago

Like it? Did it myself, keeps the bike on the ground, since it goes so fast now I straight-piped the cat, removed the mirrors, and the license plate holder.

[–] quips@slrpnk.net 1 points 12 hours ago

Exactly, emanates financial responsibility

Perfect reason to drive an 04 civic lmao
