That's it.

You'd never see it reach 0 because its a warning

You'd be dead before the scientists have a chance to convene to make a decision to change it to 0

Its not a stat in a video game lol, it's a human intepretation of the current geopolitical tensions, intepretations does not necessary mean reality.

Yeah midnight 00:00:00 represents that doomsday has happened. Even if 100,000 nuclear missiles were already in the air hurtling to their targets, that still technically wouldn't be 00:00:00

HOW ABOUT A NICE GAME OF CHESS?
[–] lemmie689@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Something like in this movie maybe?

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

I'd recommend the movie Threads (1984), if you don't feel like sleeping for the next week or so.

I love that it has the test trails to measure the shockwave.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Don't let a little thing like nuclear annihilation get in the way of science. Might be the last opportunity we have to measure the effects for a while.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

For a very, very brief moment, humanity did good science

Thats what I always thought but it always makes National News and everything just got me to thinking why the hell does it keep track??

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 13 points 2 days ago

It doesn’t. Its a metaphor.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

OP, the clock is created and moved my humans. Its not actually something that counts down on its own.

Trump: since you have indicated 0.5seconds to Doom's day I gone ahead and waited 0.5 seconds before pressing the big red button they told me not to press. Thanks for your attention to this mat.....

100,000.5 years later.... Yes, I have in did identified the source of "the signal" that ended all life on this planet.

[–] Patnou@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Well If it is the end of the world just want to say to all my fellow Lemmy Heads. So long and thanks for all the fish.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 2 days ago

Doomsday. Duh.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

We'd already be in ww3. It's an indicator, not a mechanism that does anything on its own.

[–] L7HM77@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Trying to recall the purpose of the clock from memory, it's supposed to be an estimate of how far away are we from thermonuclear annihilation. Specifically, how tense international politics are, how physically far apart the world's militaries are from conflict, how long it would take for chain-of-command to actually launch nukes. Are we one bad phone call from launching? 00:00:00 would mean the rockets are armed and in the air, no turning back.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's symbolic, so nothing, unless someone happens to move it when the carpet of nukes are on their way or whatever, then it would be symbolic and correct.

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

00:00 is supposed to signify doomsday so my theory is that we would never actually see the time set to 00:00. Figure it gets down to 00:05 due to increased global issues so we know everything is super on-edge. In that scenario, nuclear war would probably kickoff and the last thing on anyone’s mind would be setting the clock to 00:00. After the kickoff of nuclear war, I doubt anyone is going to care enough to update the clock so it would forever be set to 00:05 until an advanced race of aliens send their exo archeologists to earth and make the discovery.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 5 points 2 days ago

Would make a good premise for a Fallout-style post-apocalyptic RPG. The quest is to reach the Doomsday clock and set it to 00:00.

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Nothing instantly. It's more symbolic. It's an indicator of how we are doing. Clock forward: worse, clock back: it got better.

Some say it's the point of no return and we're fucked from that moment on, regardless what we do or stop doing.

(It's all explained in more detail here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock )

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Same thing that happened when the Mayan calendar reset.

Nothing. Nothing would happen.

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 1 points 2 days ago

There would be so much other news that this slow-new-day story wouldn't be covered by anyway. Assuming it even moves - the idea that at 0 it is too late and so it can't reach zero because nobody is left to move it is reasonable.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

CERTAIN DOOM!

no but really, the doomsday clock is a reaction to global politics and affairs, not the other way around. And total annihilation would coincide with it reaching midnight.

[–] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Someone would have to write a song about it.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

It's the Last Midnight?

[–] FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Total thermonuclear annihilation

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

I'd rather watch that during christmas than another 99 hour fireplace video.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As I understand, this clock measures how habitable the world remains for humans. If we get to the end, we'd say that humans can't easily survive anymore.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 2 days ago

It's about nuclear weapons and how close they are to being used and annihilating the world because of MAD.
