I'm looking to switch from Google Photos to an alternative. Looked into Immich and Ente already, which have quite some reviews online. But have found little about Zeitkapsl. Anyone here have some experience?

Putting stuff on the internet you should always assume sooner or later, this will be publicly available.

That's it, the rule of Internet

[โ€“] thesdev@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Do you mean the uploaded images? They are end-to-end encrypted.

[โ€“] slowcakes@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

Sure, but whatever the method they use or how ever your app works, it's only temporary. You have no control of the future of what said company does, or laws they have to follow.

I'm just saying the internet should not be considered private if privacy is your concern.

Not to bash them or something, but just FYI: I got interested in how they've implemented AI client-side, and they use Android MLKit in their Android app for that.

The problem with MLKit is that it phones back to... ta-dam!.. Google, even if it's not actually used by the app, and that telemetry can't be legally (and neither in any convenient and reliable way te technically) disabled, even by the app developer.

It doesn't seem to be sending any sensitive information in that telemetry, but I don't know Rick: changing Google for... Google?

[โ€“] Ruigaard@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

so for me as a layman, what does that mean, the AI training is still routed via Google or shared with them?

[โ€“] lemmysmash@beehaw.org 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No, the actual AI runs locally, on the phone. What MLKit does is two things:

  1. Downloads the actual AI models from Google's servers โ€” not sure, but maybe they can be bundled or downloaded from other sources.

  2. Send the usage analytics about those models โ€” again, don't remember exactly what's being sent but the actual prompts/source images/model responses shouldn't be sent in normal operation.

Why I highlighted the normal operation thing is because Google is kinda famous for collecting data it shouldn't be collecting, e.g. read this README for example: https://github.com/PlqnK/magisk-supl-replacer

Thanks for the explanation, I get it a bit now

I'm using Ente.io and it's awesome. ๐Ÿฆ†

[โ€“] unsettlinglymoist@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've heard it's great, but it's based in the US.

[โ€“] Biobaron@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is it though? I thought their Servers are based in Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam.

Unfortunately it's headquartered in Delaware and it's subject to US law even though their servers are in the EU.

Jottacloud has cheaper family subscription.

[โ€“] Ruigaard@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How do you like their service for photos?

[โ€“] zewerede@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Yes, no issues. Sync is fast, usually my connection is limit. They have separate folder: photos and archive (where I store any other files).

[โ€“] thesdev@feddit.org 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I suppose that's because they're relatively new (one year or so?).

I switched a couple of months ago from Google Photos. They have a guide how to do the export/import, took a couple hours for my library of 20 GB. The app is basic (no face grouping or magic eraser), and the sync of new photos takes a while. They're very active with new features and improving the product though, you can take a look at their Mastodon account to follow the developments.

All in all I'm nowhere near a heavy user and it provides the basics which is providing automatic backups without a fuss so I'm happy with it.

Thanks for your review, I saw they have a developer roadmap as well which showed some nice features for the future. With a young company like this, I hope they make it and don't go bust down the road.

Ente doesn't support subfolders, which is a shame (although it is the highest voted feature request). Zeitkapsl does โค๏ธ

[โ€“] fluffy@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Isnโ€™t Ente US-based?

[โ€“] warmaster@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The company and servers, yes. Devs / Owners are from India I believe.

[โ€“] kungfuratte@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The actual user data is stored at locations in Europe (Germany. France, Netherlands).

[โ€“] djvdKu@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Which changes nothing, because as American company they have to follow American law, which also includes access to servers if needed. It's just EU-washing by them

[โ€“] warmaster@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Really ? That's great to know. I'll give them another look then.

[โ€“] warmaster@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago

I don't remember exactly, but yeah somewhere from that side of the planet.

[โ€“] Reznik@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

Checked Ente and saw that this app comes with an (local) AI installed. And that's a no go for me, especially if I don't know what the AI is used for.

[โ€“] scotmartin@feddit.org 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Am I the only one using Nextcloud for that ?

[โ€“] aldfin@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

For me Nextcloud doesnโ€™t seem to have the performance needed. Not sure if itโ€™s because I have a large library or something related to the configuration, but for me Immich does a better job. I do have the photos on Nextcloud syncing to another device too just as a failsafe.

I am still hesitant to try since i am not clear how much storage i currently use on smugmug...

[โ€“] skeezix@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)
