This reminded me of the time when I was a kid and woke up at like 3 am to a toy from the shelf that was over my bed landing on me. Followed shortly by a couple other items. I then had to duck and cover and tank it as the rest of the shelf landed on me because my cat was right next to me sleeping like the dead and I didn't want it to hit her.

It's one of those things that makes me question if there's a god or fate or whatever because if that thing had just whacked me in the head while I was asleep it would have really sucked.

I'm slightly annoyed that the red book isn't depicted above the blue, and the picture frame is also not in the side view.

I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder

The arm of the cactus in the first frame is also pointing forwards or towards the position of the second frame. In the second frame the arm is pointing away from the camera.

Somebody rearranged the whole cupboard between the frames.

It may be pointed at an angle. Somewhat to the right in first frame, slightly towards the viewer.

The pictures might have been shot in different days and things rearranged

The picture frame is probably farther back than it looks, still no excuse for it not showing over the top.

The screws don't even reach through the drywall?

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 9 points 17 hours ago

My homeowner OCD kicking in. No way that screw is holding a shelf with that much weight. Should have extended into the stud. I would have also accepted toggle bolts or other anchoring devices.

Thic Drywall

Where'd they even find shelf-putty-uppy screws that short? Seriously those sound adorable.

And what kind of monster doesn't at least use those things that open up on the inside and hold against the back?

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

It's possible to cut a groove in a board so you can drive a screw outwards from it, but that's pretty difficult and also the wrong approach for shelves which should be attached to the wall by supports underneath instead to distribute forces better.

[–] kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 hours ago

Could be one of these.

[–] PlantJam@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

You could make this exact shelf as a floating shelf. It's a 1x2 frame with a thin board on top.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

In this case, the bookshelf is stronger than that poor screw. When attaching things, especially things with variable load and the potential for a lot of touching, you absolutely need to either drill into one or more studs (based on length of said item), or use the appropriately-rated drywall anchor (they are rated based on weight load). Both the anchor and screw must pierce the drywall, and the screw must be tightened so that it collapses the anchor back into the drywall. That’s what gives it the ability to hold up.

The stud is getting screwed.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 7 points 22 hours ago

I dunno, looks like the screw is too short to reach the stud.

Size matters. 🤪

Bolts don't work like this. And the geometry is so easily wrong here. I didn't think a human would be so sloppy
