Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Snip:

The overwhelming majority of Greenland residents do not want to become US citizens, The Financial Times reported, citing a sociological survey conducted by Verian.

According to the poll, 85% of Greenlanders do not want to become Americans because they believe that the standard of living in Denmark is much higher. In particular, the island's residents are concerned about crime and expensive medical services in the US.

Don't worry Greenland, they won't actually let you be citizens

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Sure they will, they'll be Bronze level citizens

When they're not on duty at the labor facility, they get to be out and about until 6pm!

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

But their shifts end at 7pm

Just one of the benefits of being free!

American Indians generally weren't citizens until 1924

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 30 points 1 month ago

American Samoans aren't born citizens to this day, despite being born and living in American territory (American Samoa)

What is the damage of 15% of greenlanders.

[–] rootsbreadandmakka@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Supposedly only 6% want to be part of the USA, 9% undecided

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

That's in the range of "people accidentally selected this option"

[–] oliveoil@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The damage may be that they are already colonized by another group of white people, and a new group of white people want to take over.

I.e. maybe this change could improve my material conditions, bring investment, and change the repressive laws.

When you are poor and struggling, and it's not clear if the new situation is worse, and when the new situation will necessarily bring a lot of change, some may bring themselves to accept it.

And as to @rootsbreadandmakka, this demographic is only 6%.

This implies extreme unpopularity of a switch to American ownership. Because it means a status quo in the face of all the nastiness of the Scandinavian supremacists.

A blend of chuds who are going to be chuds no matter what and people who have the (rather delusional) opinion that they can somehow advance their national liberation by having the yanks kick the Danes out.

[–] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's a lot lower than I thought it would be tbh. I would have guessed at least 90%, probably 95%

If I am not mistaken Greenland has the highest suicide rate in the world. To be fair, not surprising a few of them would want to gtfo.

[–] CocteauChameleons@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Highest suicide rate in the US correlates with the states that have large native populations. Alaska, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming.

[–] Coolkidbozzy@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

Unfortunately Inuits share many of the same issues as the First Nations of canada and the reservations of the US. Sexual assault, poverty, substance abuse, racism, underdevelopment, etc. It's just more visible because they make up such a large proportion of the population

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yeah, well I'll have you know some Aussie Youtuber who has never set foot in Greenland thinks Greenland is better off with the US because that would make the Danish so mad.

[–] demerit@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 month ago

We love to erase indigenous people for the sake of owning a section of white people

[–] CocteauChameleons@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago

Privatize all the land, melt all the snow, build condos for rich people on the beach, send ICE to deport the Inuits

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Been pretty offline this week. Is citizenship on the table or is the question itself delusional?

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They're almost certainly getting the Samoa treatment if it happens

[–] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

convinced that in every poll ever theres always a 10%-5% that is just this boomer meme

[–] Torenico@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Since when the US even cares about the opinion of the locals

[–] BannedVoice@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I understand Greenland, I don’t want to be a US citizen since he took office either.

[–] SovietyWoomy@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You were fine with all the racism, social murder, and imperialism before trump?

[–] BannedVoice@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Oh for fuck sake it was a comment to a story let’s not be a bitch about it and try to start a fight shall we?

[–] carpoftruth@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I don't think it was your intent to use a gendered insult but nevertheless please don't.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Respectfully, where do you think you are? And their point still stands, it's not as if there haven't been multiple genocides that the U.S. government has directly overseen.

Wake up and smell the rot.

[–] BannedVoice@lemmy.zip -2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

I guess I thought I was in a place where I could make a simple, one lined comment about how I don’t like this country either without having to defend myself against asshats who just want to start shit because their bored. I never said I didn’t see the problems prior to Trump but because I said anything at all it somehow invites a false sense of entitled backlash. I literally live in the movie Idiocracy with you people. Holy shit

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

Oh no! Someone engaged with the text you wrote

If you felt there was a misunderstanding or that there was something you wished to discuss with the users here, not a single person would mind if you said so. But you're not suffering from oppression or censorship just because your comment was challenged.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Oh for fuck sake they were commenting on your comment, let's not freak out about being asked a question, shall we?
