Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Snip:

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also responded on the same day through social media, issuing a blunt warning.

“That’s enough now,” he wrote, followed by a firmer rejection saying “No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation.”

Nielsen emphasized that Greenland remains open to engagement but set clear limits, saying “We are open to dialogue. We are open to discussions,” adding that any talks must take place “through the proper channels and with respect for international law.”

The dispute centers on Trump’s repeated claims that Greenland should become part of the US, a position he reiterated while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One and in a separate interview with The Atlantic.

Said also:

"We are not in the situation where we are thinking that a takeover of the country might happen overnight," Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said at a news conference in the capital Nuuk.

"You cannot compare Greenland to Venezuela. We are a democratic country."

lmao Greenland not being fucked is the only fantastical thinking I'm seeing on display

[–] somename@hexbear.net 58 points 5 days ago (2 children)

They just saw the farce in Venezuela, and still have the arrogance to think they're safe.

If I believed in the idea of people deserving things, I would say that these people richly deserve what's probably coming their way

[–] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Oh they definitely deserve what's coming their way. Still, as much as i want to see Europe getting a taste of its own medicine, from a geostrategic point of view it is a lesser evil for Denmark (one of the most racist countries in all of Europe by the way) to hang onto Greenland for the time being. Especially if it continues to be a point of contention between the US and its European vassals.

Euroturds think that their beloved AmeriKKKan hegemony won't bite their asses off.

Certainly. Greenland has a very small population (only around 60,000), most of which live in small settlements near the island's coasts. It would not be able to put up any serious resistance to a US imperialist invasion.

What's interesting geopolitically is how this would effect Washington's relationship with its EU puppets. Greenland is a large chunk of EU-controlled territory. The US puppets in Brussels would be super pissed to have it taken from them. Such a move could potentially play a role in causing some kind of split between Washington and its continental European puppets.

Would they be pissed? I think they'd roll over like good little lapdogs

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

I grew up in a suburb not even attached to a major US city. It has a 60,000+ population right now lmao. Absolutely wild there's European countries smaller than NYC or LA in both population and area.

Denmark seriously trotted out that they helped America invade Iraq as a positive and a defense

No self awareness whatsoever

[–] Sauvandu60@lemmy.ml 48 points 5 days ago (2 children)

When the annexation happens, the European Union will be deeply concerned and closely monitoring the situation while doing absolutely nothing about it.

[–] spudnik@hexbear.net 13 points 4 days ago

while doing absolutely nothing about it

Other than continuing to buy American weapons systems financed by extreme austerity

We are open to dialogue. We are open to discussions.

So what then you're gonna relent if Presinald Trunt brings you a bouquet of flowers and a bottle Rosé?

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 36 points 5 days ago

Right what are they even going to discuss? That's the funniest thing you could say.

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 22 points 5 days ago

Trump could have Greenland if he showed some civility☆

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 15 points 5 days ago

I'm coming over with a bouquet of flowers a bottle rosé. So - Denmark - wine and flowers means I get to f— take Greenland. I hope - I hope - the easy way. But the hard way is okay too. I still take it. And I still win. But there will be some dead bodies that way.

Ironically, Russia would be respecting NATO more than the US in such scenario. Russia could've attacked the Baltics, yet they didn't, because they're NATO allies. Also, fears of Article 5. But, America still wants to attack a NATO ally for no reason whatsoever. That shows that America does not respect NATO's borders, nor they fear Article 5.

That would be the greatest propaganda victory to their geopolitical rivals.

[–] WereHacker@lemmy.ml 24 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Don't worry. You already explained you are a democracy.

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 25 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Kingdom of Denmark yeah okay

[–] WereHacker@lemmy.ml 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

No No. Greenland is not a colony. The danes are only there to help. And the usaians just think they can do a better job.

Besides you can be a democracy and have a king. Authoritarian doesn't mean non democratic as recently seen. Authoritarian just means "having oil reserves"
