Turns out she has been on the Venezuelan political scene for quite some time.

October 10, 2025, María Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize for ‘promoting democratic rights’. The Nobel committee congratulated her and praised her "tireless work" for democracy in Venezuela. Ironically, on April 11, 2002, Machado signed away democratic institutions in an attempt to overthrow a democratically elected government, and twenty-three years later, she is the flagbearer of Western democracy.

Pretty short article, worth a read.

You telling me this whole fiasco is because of oil AND he's mad he didn't get the peace prize? And the Epstein files?

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 51 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It appear that she was not that relevant. Since Trump said she won't rule the transition government

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 36 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Things would be very different if she had declined the Nobel Prize and made a statement that Donald Trump was the rightful recipient.

[–] Earthman_Jim@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 days ago

People really believe this?

She did dedicate her award to him...

And like every other Trump ass kisser, she got fuck all for it.

Nah. The US has been scheming on Venezuela for better than two decades. The powers behind the throne manipulated Trump into thinking it was his idea.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I heard that she is not popular in Venezuela. A doubt the prize has anything to do with it

[–] HurlingDurling@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But didn't she win the elections?

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Edmundo González was the candidate

[–] HurlingDurling@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

So then is he now president?

Before you click on this link, understand that it is a hugely biased website with a stated "anti-imperialist" agenda:

https://orinocotribune.com/poll-majority-in-venezuela-do-not-approve-of-right-wing-opposition-leader-maria-corina-machado/

I've seen other stories on Lemmy about how most Venezuelans do not like her pro-Trump stance, but this is the first link I found in a search. All other stories are a day or two old talking about how Trump is excluding her from power, so I'm having a hard time finding more. This could very well be a bullshit poll from a clearly biased source, but this might be where people are "hearing" that she is not popular.

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Maybe it's not too late for her to trade the prize for the leadership.

[–] GrammarPolice@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Sucked that d all to still get shot

TBH the nobel peace committee awarding their prize to one party in an already tensioned environment was like pouring oil in fire.

They might not have started the war with it, but significantly contributed to normalizing actions that left 40 civilians dead, the violation of UN charta by abducting a foreign leader and now threats to Greenland, Cuba, Columbia etc. they literally sparked a global crisis.

Usually they need like 5-50 years to award someone their stupid prize, but this time it was only weeks after Trump started talking about Venezuela.

If we had any spine left we would sanction the shit out of this disgrace of a committee. Honestly they need prison time and all their funds for 100 years taken from them and invested into stabilizing everything again. Maybe then in 2125 they are more careful not to award war criminals.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Machado the peace prize on October 11. Even though this is not as disturbing as that of Henry Kissinger and Aung San Suu Kyi.

Hol up.

Yea the Nobel peace prize is a much of a joke as "times person of the year"

Spoiler alert Hitler won times man of the year.

[–] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Although Time's Man (now Person) of the Year is about who has had the most impact in a given year, it's not meant to be an honour or endorsement of the person chosen, or at least not officially. Not is it something Hitler "won". He was named it.

In their wording, he was "the newsmaker who most influenced world events for better or worse” in that year (1938), which tbh is hard to argue with.

From this article about it,

Time named Hitler 1938’s Man of the Year in its Jan. 2, 1939, issue, whose cover illustration, did not feature the portrait of Hitler in the circulating posts, but rather a black-and-white drawing depicting Hitler as a small figure playing a large organ with the caption: “From the unholy organist, a hymn of hate.”

So did you, Mr. Sgt. Choke and Stroke. An interesting coincidence, I'd say

They literally give that thing away to any politician who manages to not doze off during the nomination talks.
