Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image is of military and civilian sites across Caracas which were bombed by the United States as of last weekend.

As everybody has already known for a couple days, the US has abducted Maduro and his wife in a massive operation (of which the exact details are not currently known, but involved hundreds of aircraft and at least some bombing of military and civilian targets), and has threatened Venezuela and the socialist party with further abductions and widespread murder if they do not hand over control of the country directly to the United States. In a statement that really says it all, Trump said that Machado is not being considered for the colonial viceroy position due to her sheer unpopularity. Various parties and countries around the world - and inside the US - have expressed their disapproval, which, as we all know, will not shift US foreign policy a single iota.

A few months ago, when the pressure campaign on Venezuela began, I speculated that Maduro was going to be killed or captured eventually. Flagrantly illegal and violent American military campaigns in Latin America are not new. The US has been invading land, looting banks, assassinating democratically elected leaders, and otherwise overthrowing countries in the region for their own economic benefit for the better part of two centuries, under both Democratic and Republican parties. Unfortunately, we all know that Russia and China are unlikely to do anything meaningful to contest the US in their attempt to more violently assert hegemony in Latin America. I doubt very much that the China of today will come out to bat for Venezuela and start meaningfully pressuring the US economically. For better and worse, we are far from the days of the USSR.

However, Latin America has, historically, met the US in its radicalism, committed to wars of anti-colonial nationalism, and carried out successful revolutions against the dictators placed in control from the US. As history continues ever onwards and conditions develop, I can only assume that we shall once again enter that radicalizing cycle. In that vein, the big question on my mind, and everybody else's, is: what comes next? Does the Venezuelan socialist party have the social and military cohesion to wage a years-long guerilla war against occupying troops? Can they quickly transition from a conventional to guerilla force as their military facilities are bombed, or will it take several years? Can they prevent the theft of their oil resources and make the attempt at foreign occupation more costly in both the manpower and economic costs than what that war will generate? Can Venezuela manufacture weapons for this guerilla war in a state of blockade? Will this military campaign begin immediately upon soldiers landing, or will it take a period of relatively unopposed occupation of months or even years? Will Cuba, Colombia, and even Mexico be in the same situation by the end of the year, with abducted leaders?

Yemen is the very recent proof that seemingly weak countries can force the American military to retreat in defeat. Can Venezuela follow? We shall see what Maduro has done to prepare the country for this war very soon. The only certain thing is that the murderous violence propagated by a trembling and dying empire shall be defeated eventually, whether it takes months, years, or decades, and the end result will be a socialist victory.

The dialectics of history ------> sicko-speeeeen

https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/venezuela-mobilizes-army--puts-oil-sector-under-military-con

Venezuelan authorities have announced the full mobilization of the armed forces across the country in response to the recent US military attack. In a newly issued decree, the government imposed a temporary military regime over the oil industry and other key sectors deemed vital to national stability.

In a parallel move, Venezuelan security services have been ordered to pursue and detain individuals suspected of involvement in the US attack. A second decree, also published on the official legal portal, directs police forces at all levels to carry out immediate arrests nationwide.

PFLP:

The Popular Front condemns in the strongest terms the continued American bullying and blatant threats against Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine condemns in the strongest terms the continued American bullying and blatant threats targeting sovereign states, particularly Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico.

America is the "mother of terrorism" in this world. The kidnapping of the free and progressive Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife is a criminal act that falls under the umbrella of organized state terrorism, and a clear declaration of the law of the jungle prevailing over international law. In light of this American rampage, international institutions and the United Nations lose their meaning and value unless they take action to deter this tyranny.

The Front expresses its full and deep solidarity with the Cuban and Venezuelan peoples, and with the fighters who have risen up against American crimes and confronted the brutal aggression targeting the president and Venezuela's sovereignty. The Front affirms that the blood of dozens of Cubans and Venezuelans who have risen up to resist American aggression, defending Venezuela's dignity and sovereignty, is a badge of honor for every free person in this world and a living embodiment of the unity of international destiny.

Confronting this American bullying is a major global responsibility. The peoples of the world and their living forces must rise up against the war criminals of the world, led by "Trump and Netanyahu", who continue to commit war crimes and piracy without accountability.

The Front affirms that Venezuela will remain free, and that its kidnapped president, Nicolás Maduro, will remain its legitimate president. Venezuela alone has the right to determine its own destiny, choose its representatives, and protect its wealth from colonial plunder. In the face of this piracy and aggression, resistance in all its forms becomes a moral duty and an existential necessity.

From Palestine to Venezuela, and from Cuba to Lebanon and Tehran, the battle is one, and the international struggle must continue and escalate to confront colonial, imperialist, and Zionist oppression, until rights are restored and imperialism and Zionism are defeated.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

The most important thing if Trump annexes Greenland is that any Democrat that comes after won't give it back.

I know, liberals will be physically incapable of remembering the event, let alone processing the contradiction, but it will still be an extremely visible example of imperial interests superceding every trapping of the US's sham democracy.

And I also think, as the US gets more overtly brutal in winning its gains, even if the total body count is lower than in previous wars that had better PR, it will be harder to justify keeping those gains after the bloodied glove of the previous president is discarded and a fresh one put on, especially if they want to keep doing their cyclical Dem/Rep good cop/bad cop routine. Then again, we might just be heading towards the endgame now where the facade of pretending to care about international law is discarded by both parties.

The vibes are off folks. 2026 is gonna be a hell of a year. Feels like we're deep in the shit, 1937-type Nazi Germany seizing Czechoslovakia and Japan about to formally invade China, with no off ramp or end in sight, and nobody opposing any of it. I really have no idea what's gonna happen next, but there is a major shift underway. Another Israeli strike on Iran feels appropriate, they're usually quick to get in on any action, but who knows what this year has in store for all of us.

Who is President Delcy Rodriguez?

Her father was Jorge Antonio Rodríguez (1942–1976), a liberal turned Marxist revolutionary and founder of the Socialist League. He was arrested for his role in the 1976 kidnapping of American businessman William Niehous. He died at age 34 while under torture, he was killed by the goverment of neoliberal Carlos Andrés Pérez, the same guy Chavez would try to coup in 1992 and who escaped from Venezuela in 1994. Delcy and her brother, Jorge Rodríguez (President of the National Assembly), view their political careers as revenge for their father's death.

She graduated with a law degree from the Central University of Venezuela in 1992. She studied labor law in Paris in 1993 and later in London. She worked as a professor and was active in the Venezuelan Association of Labor Lawyers during this period. She joined the Chavista goverment in 2004 (she was living in London in 2002 and went to the Venezuelan embassy to protest the coup that had happened), first as Vice-Minister for European Affairs and then as General Coordinator to the Vice President under her brother Jorge who was Vice President at the time.

In 2013 Maduro appointed her as Minister of Communication and Foreign Minister shortly after he took power. Around that time she also took control of SEBIN, the Venezuelan inteligency service. She became Vice-President in 2018.

Trump just told Sean Hannity that the US is going to begin conducting strikes on ~~American workers~~ "cartels" in Mexico.

We are now going to start hitting land, with regard to the cartels. The cartels are running Mexico. It's very, very sad to watch and see what's happened to that country, but the cartels are running it. They're killing 250-300K people in our country every single year. The drugs, it's horrible, it's devastated families. You know, you lose a child, or a parent, I mean parents are dying too with drugs.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro pleaded not guilty at his first hearing before the US justice system in the Southern District Court of New York, where he is accused of narco-terrorism. “I am innocent, not guilty, I am a decent man, I am still the president of my country,” said the president, who spoke through an interpreter before Judge Alvin Hellerstein.

The president mentioned that he had seen the indictment but had not read it and that he had discussed it partially with his lawyer. Maduro's defense attorney is Barry Pollack, an experienced litigator who defended WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Previously, Maduro, who was brought into the courtroom without handcuffs, wearing a black T-shirt and headphones supposedly for simultaneous translation, told the judge: “I consider myself a prisoner of war. I was captured at my home in Caracas.”

Following the president's statement, his wife, Cilia Flores, proceeded in the same manner and pleaded before the judge: “Not guilty, completely innocent.”

The charges:

Maduro and Flores are facing their first hearing before the US justice system after being kidnapped in Caracas last Saturday.

The US government accuses the president of conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess these weapons in support of criminal activities. In short, he is charged with leading the alleged Cartel of the Suns.

Finally, the president and first lady of Venezuela face charges of collaborating with criminal organizations classified as “terrorists” in the US, including Mexican cartels. These and the rest of the crimes carry penalties ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment.

NYT: Justice Dept. Drops Claim That Venezuela’s ‘Cartel de los Soles’ Is an Actual Group

https://archive.is/EbLvr

Prosecutors still accused Mr. Maduro of participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy but they abandoned the claim that Cartel de los Soles was an actual organization. Instead, the revised indictment states that it refers to a “patronage system” and a “culture of corruption” fueled by drug money.

Where the old indictment refers 32 times to Cartel de los Soles and describes Mr. Maduro as its leader, the new one mentions it twice and says that he, like his predecessor, President Hugo Chávez, participated in, perpetuated and protected this patronage system.

But they then snuck this in:

the indictment added as a defendant — and a supposed co-conspirator with Mr. Maduro — the head of a Venezuelan prison gang called Tren de Aragua.

There was story told by Vijay Prashad during one of his lectures that always stuck with me and elucidates the nature of Iranian state shortcomings

Vijay was once interviewing an Iranian official sometime in the late 90s I believe and he asked the official pointed questions about Iranian agricultural policy, specifically why Iran refused to buy high quality and cheaper wheat from India and instead insisted on buying low quality yet more expensive wheat from the United States, giving the US sanction leverage over the country's food supply

The answer the official gave shocked Vijay; the only excuse the official could come up with was "Everyone knows American wheat is better"

LMAO, Danish State media has been on a roll tonight after Trump and Miller's comments about taking over Greenland (again). Also, apparently Denmark is still trying to offer security guarantees to Ukraine, which is even funnier now that the yanks are coming to take our colony from us.

US defense against ballistic missiles is psychological. To make the enemy believe that their missiles will be intercepted and that their attacks will not be effective. So part of the doctrine is to over report intercepts and under report damage to make the enemy believe their missiles are not effective.

BMD systems create an environment where threats are deterred from use of ballistic missiles by eliminating their confidence in the effectiveness of an attack.

General deterrence targets the behavior of threat actors by focusing on the credibility of defensive actions to defeat a ballistic missile attack. BMD can undermine a threat's confidence in their ability to achieve their intended political or military objectives through missile threats or attacks. ... By shaping a threat's decisions in this way, effective defense diminishes the perceived value of ballistic missiles as tools of coercion and aggression, thus contributing to deterrence.

(couldn't find from which one this came)

Additionally, in armed conflict, we directly target the enemy's will to fight by using aggressive disinformation and propaganda to manipulate their perceptions of self, trust in their leaders, one another, and their ability to endure the hardships of battle.

Lindsey Graham's "bone crushing sanctions on Russia" bill is a go. I don't expect there to be any issue getting the votes to pass it through congress.

If this actually goes into effect, it means negotiations on Ukraine are over, permanently.

These are the sanctions that mandate a 500% tariff on any country importing Russian oil/gas. Mostly aimed at China and India.

Anders Samuelsen (former far-right libertarian Danish foreign minister) being interviewed by state television as a neutral expert: "What happened in Venezuela will not happen in Greenland. Unlike Venezuela, Greenland is not run by a drug lord dictator, neither in Nuuk or Copenhagen. We are members of NATO"

These disgusting euro freaks never learn. They still think they are protected by their honourary Aryan status. They deserve to get black-bagged and to have their colony taken from them by force. The Greenlanders doesn't deserve it, they deserve economic development and national liberation, but NATO ghouls all do.

Maduro's wife, Cilia Flores, is a professional specializing in labor and criminal law. She was the lead attorney for Hugo Chavez following his imprisonment after a failed 1992 coup attempts and she was the first female president of the Venezuelan Congress. Maduro during the 1990s was just an Union Leader who wanted to meet Chavez, rumor says he kept begging Cilia to let him see and talk with Chavez and after that the two ended up going on dates (Maduro was at the time a tall young man with a mustache) and getting married in 2013.

Can someone help me out here? Russian authorities can issue a warrant and seize a Norwegian ship sailing in international waters? Is that legal? Can they just do that?

Oh, the US and UK just did that. It's all fine then.

US forces boarded the Russian-flagged Marinera after a pursuit lasting almost two weeks as it travelled through the waters between Iceland and Scotland. The UK Royal Navy gave logistical support by air and sea.
