Dark meme, but it’s a good reminder to zoom in on what we can control today—check in on friends, take breaks from doomscrolling, and do one small useful thing.
I think that every single day: this is going to get way worse, long before it gets better.
I've never been a Prepper, but I'm getting some stuff in order. There may be a Civil War ahead, and there may be some fighting, so right now I'm concentrating on losing weight, and getting in shape. I'm also starting to get some self-defense gear together.
I've decided that dying an old man in my bed would be a waste, and my life may have a twist ending I hadn't anticipated. If it all goes sideways, I intend to get my licks in before going out.
I’m getting in shape too. Recently got a manual labor job to speed up the process. If Civil War happens, I’ll at least be strong and fast enough to kill some fascist scum.
I’ll at least be strong and fast enough to kill some fascist scum
If a major civil disruption were to happen in the US, we simply do not have clear ideological or geopolitical lines that are defined enough to create two different sides. How do you know you're fighting fascists and not just some dumb father of four who literally thinks ISIS-funded Antifa-members are coming to kill his kids. Do we really want that kind of endless murder like we've seen in the middle East? we should be thinking about every possible way to avoid that, because there's no ending for that scenario.
You're going to see many, many years of escalating, isolated violence and "insurgence lite" type events long before we get to an actual "civil war" and we would need actual opposing armies, and right now the military is loyal to the US and the constitution, which means office of the president, etc.
We are going to be served a lot better in the next several decades with people exercising community and political involvement, we can still turn this boat around but if everyone defaults to some dumb Tim Pool narrative that there's going to be "civil war" people are not going to want to do the logical and reasonable thing.

I was an anxious doomer all the time until I went to therapy. Something they said stuck with me.
The world is not binary, it is not going to be the best case or the worst case. Out of a range of infinite outcomes, focusing on the worst case scenario doesn't make sense as probability says it won't happen. What will likely happen is somewhere in that area between best and worst.
Eh they said it better, I'm having trouble remembering exactly. Point is, doomer'ing is a waste of time because it probably won't happen.
One that got me in the 2010's were the "Water wars". People told me constantly only a few more years and we'll all be at war! I legit had panic nightmares about it. Climate change worries me, and it set off anxiety. Turns out the doomers were wrong then, and continue to be wrong. Will it happen? It might. It might not. It's impossible to know, but focusing on the worst case scenario is a waste of time.
It's easy saying everything is going to hell, and to some it makes them feel better. It's much harder to accept the weird grey area we continue to live in that's neither good nor bad. So, if you're like me and things like this immediately spring up a fear response, carry that with you, and focus on you the individual. Maybe this will be the year you get that promotion, or a new job, or start a new hobby, or meet the special someone.
Syria was a water war.
It started after farming collapsed in the drought and the farmers started the revolt.
There’s still going to be wars over resources like water (and now the oil again, for no apparent reason that isn’t power hungry distraction tactics).
Nearly all wars are about resources.
It took me way to long to realize how I fucked my psyche by consuming all the apocalyptic nightmare movies, tv shows, books and videogames and of course the endless doom and gloom in the news.
Optimism is in short supply nowadays sigh
When full anxiety takes over it's very hard to go outside and just live normally, I was definitely like that. I had to look up movies ahead of time to see if they were apocalyptic and if they'd be triggering. They still are a bit, but I can enjoy things again. It's absolutely a thing that Hollywood and big media loves playing up the end of the world and playing on those anxieties.
I have a similar story with anxiety and I got mostly rid of it in steps, including therapy. I wish more people realized feeling constant worry about the world is not normal.
It’s not that the world is doing great, but that you or me worrying about it doesn’t have any benefit, so it’s unnecessary. We can’t control everything, so we should focus on what we can.
E.g. I live in the EU, so I didn’t vote for or against Trump. His crazyness does affect my life, but I literally cannot affect his behaviour in any way. So no need to obsess over it - I might roll my eyes over some headlines, but that’s it. I remember when I felt devastated in 2016 after he was first elected, and I felt paralyzed with fear and the lack of control I have. I’m so happy I’m not at that mental place anymore.
And again, I’m not gaslighting myself that the world is perfect. I’m accepting I can’t control everything, and focus my attention on the things I control in my life, and stop constant worrying on the million things I was anxious about. It’s very hatd to explain, took a lot of introspection and some therapy, but it’s possible. Therapist said I had general anxiety disorder (GAD) that I developed due to my mother’s constant negativeness and worrying. Now when I talk to her it’s so obvious, but I never realized it back then. Interesting how big an impact our childhood has on even those of us, who are lucky with regular middle-class upbringing.
Interesting, mine also came from my parents, I guess that's more common than I thought!
I think 2016 is when it started for me too actually, and it was probably because of the upward trajectory we were on that then became obvious that we werent, at least not how I thought it would be, and I had to learn to cope with that
Thanks for sharing your story
I mean, hopefully to bring perspective, the water wars are happening now. People are fighting corporations who are draining the aquifers for alphalpha and such to send abroad, there are faucets running dry and everything
It's not going to be mad Max... These problems still exist and are on track, but they way they present themselves is as a slow burning down of the infrastructure that our country is built upon
The people will remain. There will be hard times, we will have to come together to solve problems. We might have to relocate as areas become untenable
There will be unrest and disorder, but not mass murder. We just don't have it in us without years of indoctrination and drug use
Yeah, we are fed news to make us sad an angry all day. And we come here to comments to get more sad and more angry.
The world is not as it seems here in the Lemmy comment section though, not even close. You can most definitely still be happy, and you should be.
Three dictators controlling about 11000 nuclear warheads.
Not a doomer, but that looks suspiciously like the Great Filter solution to the Fermi paradox.
Fun fact: great filters don't necessarily have to wipe out the species, they just need to be obstacles unsurmountable by our current resources, mental capacity and evolutionary state.
It may be that for any species that develops spatial reasoning and language while still carrying survival instincts, that they can never get past a certain point where their tech keeps outpacing their own mental/cognitive capabilities and they keep bombing themselves back to the stone age, or creating some kind of technological wonder that they can't control because they're still unevolved primates/reptiles/insects/cephalopods despite having individual potential for thought and self-awareness.
There may be millions of civilizations out there just like us, who can look out at the stars and dream of a larger universe, but can never make a progress past their own prejudices and fears to ever get out into the universe until eventually their species just evaporates away into the great sea of entropy that comes for every world.
Your idea of a fun fact is different than my idea of a fun fact.

We can solve this problem French style.

Just wait for the water wars...
For people reading "water wars" and still chuckling and not taking it seriously because you're imagining a Mad Max world with gangs of people in dusty leather driving hot-rods with spikes all over them chasing down tanker trucks full of snapple, ya'll need to understand that the term "water" isn't going to be used overtly nor as a primary driver for events, and it will be only one of many compounding factors that drive people to mass-migration events.
The mass-migration events are going to get larger and more contentious, and it will lead to people electing even more authoritarian leaders because people have a deep-rooted fear of outsiders entering their land.
These authoritarians are going to start more fights, provoke more wars, and do horrendous things to innocent people. To those saying "this is already happening" yes, you are right... but it's going to get worse as the climate heats up and resources like water become harder to access in areas of dense population. These are the places that the rest of the world will start to cut off and starve first, either overtly or just as a consequence of nations having to divert resources where they can.
Save money. Have about 3 - 4 weeks of food and water on hand in case you end up having to move or in case there is civil disruption that cuts off services for days or weeks. Buy a lot of rice and beans. Get a gun. Get a plan together in case you need to leave your city. Do these things no matter where you live or how safe you think you are.
Every country that had a Civil War, or was invaded, attacked, bombed, etc. all believed it could never happen in their beautiful country.
Sarajevo held an Olympics, and a few years later was under one of the most horrific sieges in written history. Every German in 1936 would have laughed in your face if you'd described their country less than 10 years later. In old Europe, entire cities were thriving for generations, living their normal lives one day, only to have hordes of Huns or Mongols invade the next day, and kill every single person. English villages were suddenly invaded by Vikings with no warning, the mysterious Sea People ravaged the Mediterranean coasts, the European Crusaders brutally slaughtered millions for daring to not be Christian, a religion many of those Middle Eastern people of the time didn't even know existed.
The point is, NOBODY expects their nation to completely fail overnight, but it happens all the time. Right now, the people of Venezuela have been plunged into an anarchic nightmare with no warning. With no real governmental authority, a lot of personal scores are being settled right now, and it will only get worse for them. When a dictator is deposed, it leaves a power vacuum, and right now, many people are fighting for ultimate control, including MAGA. Until then, robbery, rape, and murder are going to be normal life for a while.
And that is America's future as well, if we don't take the MAGA National Security Threat seriously.
If I get a gun, it's only going to have one round for it.
I'm not going to live in that world.
Well that's just stupid.
You probably live in walking distance of people who have survived forced marches, famine and starvation, deaths of family, military oppression and extreme survival situations that they made it through and went on live in the better world that follows.
You literally cannot know what's going to happen a week down the line in any situation, that's why I advocate for stocking up for a few weeks, because that's generally how long major social disruptions last before things either calm down or get worse. Always bet on the better outcome and prepare for the worst. It isn't over until it's over and you have no idea if what happens after death is better or worse. You might stay dead 10^10^10^56 years and suddenly pop back into existence as a kind of sapient bug being slowly digested by a pitcher-plan type life form, or worse. We lived over a half million years as relatively modern primates, and you could have been born as any of of them struggling to survive, you already won the lottery once, why try again.
I'd you're gonna go all out, might as was all go big (more than one round).
Instructions unclear, I've gone big

It's. Why is that so hard to get right?
It already has.
