People who signed up for a US ‘self-deportation’ scheme say their payoffs were delayed, misdirected or never arrived – leaving them empty-handed in their home countries

Interesting how they heard the news about the self-deportation but didn't hear the news about how Trump never pays people.

[–] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's never an issue until it affects them personally.

In all seriousness, I'm more surprised that anyone got the money at all

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 56 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah, that's the real takeaway. I expected them to send them out them say come and get it.

You should pay the first few marks so they’ll help establish the veneer of credibility. That’s Conning 101.

I forget the corresponding Ferengi Rule of Acquisition number.

Gotta do just enough payments that people won't think it's a lie, and that's when you pull the (insufferably obvious) switch-a-roo

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

Well you start it to fool people, then you cut it off. (The only reason it was offered was because it's cheaper than sending an agent after you.)

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 48 points 3 weeks ago

What?! The administration run by a man who is famous for not paying people didn't pay some people?!

[–] shittydwarf@piefed.social 47 points 3 weeks ago

A trump never pays his debts

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 3 weeks ago

👏TRUMP👏NEVER👏PAYS👏HIS👏BILLS👏

(Unless it's the hush money bill, or the raping little girls bill, he's always got cash for those)

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 32 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Trump didn't pay his bill?!?

[–] zergtoshi@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Last time I heard, he did different things with his Bill.

[–] random_character_a@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

So you're saying some DID get the $1k? That seems more amazing.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 19 points 3 weeks ago

Trump rarely pays people he looks upon as “the help”.

The man is such a ghetto trash human being.

[–] polysexualstick@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago

Everyone in here going like "What did they expect lol?" needs to get their fucking moral compass checked. People in a probably very desperate situation (because for everyone else, $ 1000 wouldn't be enough for this) were scammed by their own goddamn government. Governments are not supposed to do this, and we rely on our governments to do what they say every single day for a lot of things. Blaming the victims for this is wild to me.

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I warned when they announced the program that Trump never fucking pays.

Anybody who took that deal was asking to get scammed.

tbf, I'm assuming a lot of people who accepted that deal is not because they wanted 1k, it's because that are fleeing this hellhole.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I was promised epstein files today. What's happening with that?

[–] LefterShark@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 weeks ago

They tricked you.

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Also we were all getting 2k checks in. The mail from the teriffs. I think those are the checks he just gave to the troops lol

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

if you don't pay the first wave, there is no second wave

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Atrocious, but also if you are stupid enough to believe these fuckers would actually give you that money, you deserve what you got, I guess?

[–] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 23 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

if you are ~~stupid~~ desperate enough to believe these fuckers would actually give you that money, you deserve what you got, I guess?

Yeah I'm not with you there

[–] Zizzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah. Its $1000, these people are desperate. Compassion should be shown.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 3 weeks ago

$1000? Do you know how many billionaires that would bankrupt? Nearly all of them, I'll bet. /S

[–] stiffyGlitch@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

desperation

[–] sunbytes@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

He just said about that the "warrior bonus" or whatever it is called that the "cheque is in the mail".

For sure doesn't sound like BS.

I mean, they'll probably get it. But still he has the brain of someone who would be doing cheque fraud if he hadn't been born into money.

[–] Catma@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

The "warrior bonus" is just money they had for housing stipends. Its literally money they probably were already getting. So it is real but fucking dumb. It has the air of delaying the first covid checks to make sure his name was on them.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That tracks with Trump's reputation.

You literally can't believe a single word a MAGA administration releases.

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 2 points 3 weeks ago

It isn't just the administration

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 weeks ago

People lured away with the promise of deportation anyway only to turn themselves in to get something out of it only to then by scammed inhuman.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

$1000 is absolutely nothing for that. My own move out of the US ended up in the multiple multiple thousands

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I never understood this, maybe they just need the money that badly or are outright threatened.

Why would you believe they would give you money once you’re out of their country. You are no longer their problem.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

Believe you are going to be deported anyway but have some trust in "law" so do this so you get something to help you and your family out of it.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 weeks ago

Shocked any received it, honestly.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Of course they haven't. Noem is as much a facetious liar as her evil lord and master drump

[–] treesquid@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

She's not facetious at all, that means humorous or witty. What she IS is fecetious, which means she's totally full of shit

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Enjoy counting your nothing, idiots.

[–] stiffyGlitch@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh, honestly, did you not read the colony policy

That defines you as company property

That waivers your say in autonomy

The conglomerate's got you in lock and key

We put the "dollar" back into "idolatry"

If you're upset, you can rent an apology

We are a ~~family~~ government forged in bureaucracy

No "I" in "team" but there's "con" in "economy"

Were you expecting adventure

Were you hoping for fun

My friend, you're indentured

And pleasure's exempt from your tenure

So venture back down to your slum

That's provided at generous prices

Your worth is determined by your sacrifices

A small term of service when down on the surface

Internment's a freebie that comes with the purchase
