Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

One of their current leads is huge into Scientology too. I’m all for them taking some flak right now.

If you google “SNL Scientologist” then Chloe Fineman’s name pops up. But most of the articles are just speculation because of her associations with known celebrity Scientologists.

She’s 2nd gen and follows the same patterns other active higher Scientologists show with social media blocking of large anti bullshit creators. It could be a coincidence that a major star whose parents were Scientologists blocks a bunch of folks who are rabidly anti-Hubbard but it would certainly be a very odd one.

It’s just the start off slop

Of all the places I don’t want AI, Saturday Night Live is the least consequential of them. Am I supposed to care that they used AI to illustrate a story?

Yes, they already put in next door to no effort as it is. Sit through a full episode without taking your eyes off the screen and then tell yourself in the mirror that every person involved in the production did they best they could.

SNL bats .040 with a .120 OBP and thumps its chest if it advances on an error

So you're saying you don't enjoy it and don't watch it?

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 months ago

No, those words are not in my comment. I said what I wrote. Be more attentive.

Death by a thousand cuts.

Yeah, this seems a lot more benign than I expected. Generally speaking, I hate when AI bypasses the human element of what's being produced. Assuming the main content of the jokes are good, nobody is expecting a photo shoot at a casino to be used for a 10-second joke. Maybe you can find a stock photo and Photoshop to do the job - I don't think anybody would care. Is AI really a bridge too far and turns the whole thing into slop?

To be clear, I don't want AI to be "the thing". I think it's a matter of time before this over hyped bubble pops. I hate it being shoved down our throat every which way. But it could have some use as a background tool in some circumstances and I'll pick my battles there.

Putting aside factors that it's a human being's job to do that work, AI is always bad. It has stolen the fruits of people's labor and it destroys fresh water supplies. It's mostly drawing energy from energy sources that also harm the environment.

They can pay some kid the equivalent of a taco to pull up a pic of just about anything.
