What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.
What are the basic rules of the community?
Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.
This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

This place is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This includes those of mixed heritage and those who may be "white" but are of an ethnicity that is a minority in their area (i.e. Kurds, etc) If you've experienced oppression due to your identity that is not based on sexual / gender identification, you are welcome here.
Moreover, for our American audience, we have people from around the world who are "white" but are oppressed due to being a minority in their country. They are and should be welcomed here.

There's no way for IQ tests to accurately measure between nations because of this. It's all bullshit anyway because you can study/practice IQ tests to get better results, meaning they aren't objective measurements of a person's intelligence. They're just a measurement of how good you are at taking IQ tests.

Today I got coffee from a new place I found on my way home, and the bariata was so pretty, but by conventional standards around here she wouldn't have be considered so. It really drove home to me how very white supremacist the dominant beauty standards here are. I didn't say anything about any of that of course, but it did get me thinking about body image / why I don't understand why people find me attractive.
My struggle from harboring a fuck ton of internalized racism to being extremely proud of being Black showed me this.
The less attractive I began to find whiteness as a system, the less attractive I began to find wh*tes as people.
The more I began to love my Blackness, the more attractive I began to find Black people.

Rare case of this not being race related (probably), and gonna have to be vague about this, but I do get grim satisfaction from seeing people slowly begin to realize that someone I called out as Bad News a year and a half ago is in fact creepy, gross, toxic, predatory. AGAIN. This is like the 7th time this has happened that I can remember off the top of my head. I don't go making this judgement willy nilly so I can have stopped clock moments, it's pretty rare that I'll assess someone this way and warn people. But I keep being vindicated eventually.

That third-party recruiter got back to me and said that the client marked my application as "Qualified" meaning that they'll reach out for an interview soon likely. Because it's around Christmas time, she told me it might be a bit delayed, but she said that she'll definitely work with me to secure my chances of getting an interview with this client and even others.

Due to my androgyny, I have been letting people have a "choose your own adventure" approach to my gender, as I am gendered inconsistently.
If someone calls me a man, okay, then I am a man.
If someone calls me a woman, okay, then I am a woman.
I sometimes engage in gendered code switching with my voice because of this.
For instance, let's say I go into the grocery store, and the cashier says, "Find everything you need, ma'am?" I will respond with an unequivocally feminine voice to accommodate their perception.
Let's say I go into a coffee shop immediately after, and then the barista says, "What can I get you today, sir?" then I might respond with "A large black Americano" with my most bassy, masculine voice.
I got used to it by now.

I do not like being in banks or government buildings and I suspect it mainly has to do with being queer and poc, maybe 30% and 70% respectively. I'm trying to get over self defeating mindset but it's like idk what to expect out of these institutions other than patronizing talking points. When it's staffed by poc/queer people it feels like their a different breed I talked before of the split in the people who's families had enough to get here legally vs not but yeah.
The more I get into it I can hide my queerness but my skin color ain't changing. I know assimilation is a dead route anyway. I'm a little down rn but no worries, winter blues or something. Little of just knowing next year ain't gonna be a turn around but I'll keep living.
