If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

Buffy Fish Owl has been another fan fav in the previous games and is back for another round. Buffy is the lightest colored of the fish owls, and has the same rounded face and floppy ears of its relatives.

It comes from tropical forests and freshwater weekends in Southeast Asia, where it hunts fish, crabs, reptiles, birds, bats and bugs. It will grab fish from the waters surface or wafr in shallow water, but as owls aren't waterproof, they don't dive on in.

The Northern Pygmy is one of the smaller owls at 6 inches / 15 cm. It is from the Western US and Canada, though there is still much debate if some of the Central American pygmy owls are distinct species or not.

The Northern Pygmy is one of the pygmy species that has ocelli, false eyes, which are spots on the back of its neck to confuse other animals which way it is looking.

These owls like to live in former woodpecker nests in trees, and they will roam the forest and savannah looking for small mammals, birds even approaching their own size, and larger insects.

We've got a larger yet silly looking owl with a seafood diet, and a small but fierce warrior of the forest. These 2 seem like they got their attitudes switched at birth. Which one of these peculiar birds gets your vote today?

Little Ruru killed it yesterday! Both the highest score and widest margin of the games so far!

Spotted is a great owl in its own right, but is overshadowed by White Faced as your favorite owl of Africa, and Milky Eagle is picking up the rest of the attention, leaving little for the more common Spotted Eagle.

I'm curious to see if the Morepork can keep up the momentum. I think it is in good position to do break out from the pack like Saw Whet did last year, but this year has been one surprise after the next.

Heck yeah! People love that li’l owl! Whoot!

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I would not be upset at all for lil Ru to represent us.

That was funny...

Got a report from a Piefed user that Buffy wasn't showing up.

I checked from my Piefed alt and I confirmed there was no Buffy. I edited it to just throw a bunch of periods at the end to see if that would fix some kind of syntax error or some such thing, and that seems to have worked.

Apologies to any confusion this may have caused, and if anyone has any ideas why the original post didnt work, I'd be curious. I havent done anything different than all my other posts for the event.

It "comes from...freshwater weekends in Southeast Asia"?

What is a freshwater weekend and does it differ from a saltwater weekend?

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Dang Gboard gets dumber and dumber, I swear. 😠

Wetlands, not weekends.

If you can believe it, Gboard still switches owl to iwl or other nonsense fairly regularly after all my posting here. Ticks me off so much.

I can still remember buffy defeating the barn owl and feeling salty about it. I have healed.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Was that the first year? I see last year Barn lost to Snowy. I cant find the first year bracket.

[–] Luvs2Spuj@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It was, I think buffy had a great run that year but I'm not sure. Maybe this needs a wiki for trivia and records...

I have all the stats for this year and last year, but season 1 I did voting a different way, so I never recorded it and now it's a pain to find it.

[–] Luvs2Spuj@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Let me know what stats you would be interested in. At some point I'm up for trawling through and trying to find things.

I just have the list of owls, initial seed order, and score per round. Then I used that to redo the seeding this year.

The first year I didn't group the photos, I just separately put up like 3 of each and added the total scores, so if you like 2 out of 3 pics for one, but all 3 of the other, it gave both a few chances to pick up points in case I picked a less optimal photo, or what have you.

Then I simplified it to just the 2 groups, letting you guys average it out yourselves. So the scores are lower, but that's because you don't get up to 6 votes per match.
