Same shit different decade. USA PATRIOT Act covered 2001 until now. Reagan bullshit before that. McCarthyism before that. And on and on. US has always shit on leftists even though leftists are, historically, the only thing that actually keeps this shit pile functioning.
We're right on track for hitting another Great Depression almost exactly a hundred years to the date. We're in the Guilded Age again right now; a thin veneer of gold over the most cheaply made solid core of pocked and porous cast-lead. History doesn't even rhyme. We just do the same exact stupid shit over and over and over.
We'll weather this. The leftists will come to the rescue again, undo the fascism again, put us back where we were (not where we should be; two steps back, two point one steps forward) again, then we'll slowly forget again. In another hundred years everyone who could remember will be dead and we'll do this exact same stupid shit again.
The problem is capital. That's why we're stuck in this loop. We don't see any extra-terrestrial civilizations because they all get trapped in the same Great Filter. Nothing so lofty as utter self-destruction. Reaching out to the greater universe is a long distance phone call. Ma-Bell needs that scratch. Pay up. We need a PowerPoint explaining why contacting distant alien civilizations directly benefits the shareholders. The Great Filter is capitalism. Not one single species has ever overcome it. If we were capable of learning anything we would make sure to be the first, but instead of letting scientists and engineers and dreamers control things we let rich tech-bros make all the calls.

On the flip if advanced alien civilizations were breaking through the Great Filter humanity on Earth would be one of the last backwaters to know about it. For all we know it happens all the time and we just aren't even remotely advanced enough to perceive it. Facts are human arrogance, we barely know a fraction.

Yeah, I think it was about political violence. I think they basically scraped the site looking for keywords. I suggested, on badposting, that we just say a lot of sentences with probable keywords in it to skew the data. So that if they hung around us and tried to punch in data for every hit, their data would be nuked.
