Open source cellular modem firmware or blobs?

[โ€“] mholiv@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Almost certainly blobs. The cost to create open would double the cost at a minimum. That and open modem firmware is illegal in the EU. https://fsfe.org/activities/radiodirective/radiodirective.en.html

I didn't see it mentioned in the article, but does it have a headphone jack?

[โ€“] filtoid@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

From the images, which I assume are concept art rather than an actual debice, no it does not appear to have one. I've preordered myself as that's not a deal-breaker but it is disappointing, perhaps they will do something with the USB socket to allow it

[โ€“] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

I'm in the US anyway, so it isn't an immediate concern, but it pretty much is a deal breaker for me so I guess that is that. Nothing USB is going to do it for me, though I wouldn't be surprised if USB DAC/Amps have some compatibility issues.

Anyone know if the bootloaders unlocked? Couldn't find anything on the Jolla site.

Also, I'm curious about the below. If the switch is configurable, doesn't that mean its ultimately triggering a software function? If so then what's the point of it being physical?

...the new Jolla Phone promises a user-configurable physical Privacy Switch that lets you turn off the microphone, Bluetooth, Android apps, or whatever you wish.

I would definitely prefer hardware switches for things like camera, microphone or radio.

...BUT if I had to choose between a software switch or no switch I would choose to have a switch. Being able to do things with my phone without using the screen can come in handy.

I can double press the on/off button on my current phone to launch apps or turn on/off the flashlight. I use the latter and wish it could do more.

A switch for sharing my location with my wife would be nice. I would like a switch for recording sound in case my boss tries anything illegal. Being able to trigger Ripple with something physical would make it way more practical. Locking Molly could also be nice.

I assume that different people would find different uses for a configurable software switch.

Jolla is unlocked.

[โ€“] 0x0@infosec.pub 3 points 4 days ago

Definitely unlocked.

You can even buy a couple of sony xperia devices and install Jollas Sailfish os on if you don't want to wait for this one

[โ€“] cauthon117@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is there a subscription fee for sailfish OS involved?

[โ€“] Kjell@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

On the website they say it is voluntary.

We have opened the Sailfish OS voluntary subscription as a way for anyone interested to support Sailfish OS development and the activities around it. Your support directly contributes to the long-term viability and existence of this unique European project. Together we can keep the platform open, independent and continuously improving.

[โ€“] weaselsrippedmyflesh@lemmy.pt 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Can you still update your firmware even if you're not subscribed? I was under the impression updates were restricted to subscriptions, but found nothing of the sort mentioned in their site.

[โ€“] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 6 points 4 days ago

updates were restricted to subscriptions

They are not.

Not yet, but you can provide your email to express interest at the bottom of the pre-order page.

From the FAQ

Will the Jolla Phone work outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.? Will the Jolla Phone work outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.?

Yes, we will design the cellular band configuration to enable global travelling as much as possible, including e.g. roaming in the U.S. carrier networks.

Edit: Wrong reply, wanted to add that to the comment about US "goofy bands"

[โ€“] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sadly not it appears.

Unless you know someone where they are delivering orders that will send it to you.

[โ€“] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 days ago

Relevant bit is what antenna it's got, not where they'll ship it. We've got goofy spectrum here, varies carrier to carrier too

[โ€“] ATPA9@feddit.org 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is there a way to try the os? 500 is a bit much to see if i like it...

[โ€“] Kjell@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Sailfish OS is available on Sony and Fairphone. The Fairphone version is a community port and is missing support for Android apps as I understand it. The Sony version might be official.

[โ€“] HenriVolney@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

How does it compare with the Farphone 6 running e/OS?

[โ€“] 0x0@infosec.pub 2 points 4 days ago

Isnt that just degoogled android with a skin?

[โ€“] Mangoholic@lemmy.ml 0 points 4 days ago (3 children)

E os has a backdoor for gov intelligence.

[โ€“] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)
[โ€“] Mangoholic@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I remember reading about it in one of the graphene os vs france articles. That they mostlikely complied with frances backdoor order, since they are not affected in the same way.

[โ€“] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So, it would be in the source code they publicly share? I wonder how does it work, or how do they hide it?

[โ€“] Mangoholic@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago
[โ€“] starlinguk@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Ignore the Musk employee.

[โ€“] Kynn@jlai.lu 2 points 3 days ago

So... While we're at it, I'll ask the stupid question : which gov backdoor is better to have ? :D

How about my old Nokia 7.2 with lineage OS?

[โ€“] Kjell@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

They have reached their goal and it is currently 2121 phones pre-ordered. I assume the pre-order remains open until 4th of January for batch 1. https://commerce.jolla.com/products/jolla-phone-preorder
