That's a good point. I was just trying to insult America the country and its ruling class, but I do not actually hate the ordinary working class people who unfortunately have to live there, and this is indeed language with a high potential for misuse and abuse, and I probably shouldn't have said it. Thank you for pointing that out.

I thought it was Irish-American people who have no connection cultural or otherwise to Ireland but make a big deal out of being "Irish" anyway, basically appropriating the culture of their ancestry.

She's a trans woman living in Ireland and talks about hearing the term first at 16 working hospitality, thinking it was a slur against the Irish entertainers accommodating American tourists, but the person explained that it was about the Americans with their fake sense of heritage.
