Showing still side-by-sides to illustrate FPS increase is a good bit

If you get 600+FPS in a game, why would you want more? What is even the point?

This is fucking bullshit man. I can hardly tell the difference between 45 and 60 fps there is no way that that's important in any way!

[–] NonWonderDog@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

https://testufo.com/persistence

The difference between 60 and 120 Hz and even between 120 and 240 Hz is blatantly obvious in this example. It’s about replicating the effect of looking out the side window of a moving car, not just the illusion of motion (which movies do well enough at 24 fps).

o_O

I will leave you to your delusions. I have no idea what this is supposed to show me.

I keep being baffled by Fortnite on a technical level. How is it 150gb big. How are those specs not enough to run it at ∞ FPS in the first place considering how the game looks.

Did they code it bad enough where it loads everything or can you hotswap that bullshit? I feel like even from the catalogue of 5000 skins there should be a rather limited amount in any given match

if you're in a match with 100 players with 100 different skins it'll take a while to load them all ig

Everyone has every skin so they can preload. Those are basically 4k+ textures which can easily hit GB in size.

I think it runs pretty well - you can even run it split screen on previous gen consoles. On PC - I mean yeah graphically it's not all that but when you're dealing with 100 players at a time and huge render distances, idk, it runs pretty okay to me.

The fuck is SLYTHOS? Is that a custom Linux? 'Cause Fortnite refuses to work on Linux. Did he "optimize" Windows and call it something new? Did he write a new OS from scratch that allows kernel-level anti-cheat?

[–] RedSturgeon@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago

These assholes are targeting tech illiterate people and selling them change of some system settings and overclocking. I would not trust them with my computer.

Why do they still not teach people how to use a Computer at school ffs (rhetorical question). There's enough people who'd get a big FPS boost by just plugging the monitor in the GPU port or turning their screen refresh rate higher in settings...

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Preoptimized custom OS

What the fuck is that, his own Linux distro or something? In any case I wouldn’t trust a person from the internet installing his “custom OS” on my PC.

[–] RandallThymes@hexbear.net 2 points 17 hours ago

There are stripped down community versions of windows that are huge security risks and not worth the minor fps boost from debloating the OS.

Also people should just use Linux if a minimal OS is what they’re looking for.

[–] Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 day ago

I don’t think Fortnite runs on Linux because of Epics anti cheat solution, but I don’t play it so I’m not 100%, just remember reading something about it in the Steam deck community.

[–] princeofsin@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How would shitty unoptimized games be fixed from some random asshole messing around with bios and driver settings?

[–] neo@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The only thing I can think of to make such a change is if your computer was set to a power-saving mode and was just unset from that. Or just overclocking everything so that you have no assurance of stability in the system + a lot more heat.

So, in other words, you will not get his claimed benefit.

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You never know, he might be removing spectre mitigations too, probably nets some frames. lol

[–] awrf@hexbear.net 4 points 22 hours ago

Probably also disabling Windows' virtualization-based security (VBS) which is known to have a pretty large performance impact, even on pretty modern & powerful hardware

[–] SootySootySoot@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It will just be overclocking, that's all he's doing that'll make a difference. Which like you say, a lot more heat, a lot less stability, and probably opens them up to liability when it breaks half the components within a year (or bricks them immediately if he accidentally turns it up too high).

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

Another thing I can think of is if his RAM wasn’t set up correctly and was running at a lower clock speed. Is that worth 200+ FPS? Definitely not.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 28 points 1 day ago

Honestly if the services isnt provided by a furry in full fursuit its probably not professional.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Never heard of this guy, what'd he say/do that was homophobic?

[–] SootySootySoot@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

lmao what a loser

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I haven't seen homophobia on the account yet but he is throwing r slurs like crazy in the responses

[–] gramxi@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

bro found out how to turn on frame gen

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Is 870 FPS even a thing? Lmao

[–] TheBroodian@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

Given that no display has a refresh rate that high, in practical terms, no

[–] RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, it can be. ive had menus reporting north of 1500fps.

There's no real benefit that high though, and even at like 500fps most professional players would be unaffected by more.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

annoying bit about some game menus, when you cant cap the frames in-game and the menu has stuff going on so the frames jump to like 900 and your PC hits all fans into overdrive.

[–] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

that's some real diminishing returns at that point. i know theres the whole "the eye can't see more than 60 fps" but i can tell the difference in just moving my mouse cursor on my 160hz and 60hz monitors. But from there on up it has to be harder to perceive. also what can run at 870fps except Overwatch on low settings.

[–] RandallThymes@hexbear.net 1 points 17 hours ago

This definitely seems to differ by person, difference in my mouse cursor movement on 60fps vs 165fps is extremely apparent.

[–] EveningCicada@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

On CRTs I stopped being able to see a difference from around 80 Hz so I suspect the reason I see a difference between 75 and 165 Hz on my current panel is due to ghosting or some other shortcoming in the display technology

How long is a piece of string?

[–] radiouser@crazypeople.online 9 points 1 day ago

Twice half it's length!
