Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

This is some really extreme kink shit and the political angle was an excuse to go through with it, right?

[–] comfy@lemmy.ml 47 points 1 month ago

The Daily Beast article on the incident says "A search of Greene’s phone revealed her Reddit profile that included “followed communities” for “bodymods” and “scarification.”". Speculation here, but following the communities instead of just looking up places to get them done suggests that they're actually interested in those scenes. My money is on underlying kink.

There's got to be some element of that, because there's "desperate grifter trying to get attention" level stunts, and there's "pay hundreds of dollars to a professional to carve you up, then have your friend zip tie you in the woods" on a whole different level. Like I assume if this was some sort of mental health crisis getting channeled into a frantic political grift the wounds would have been self-inflicted and the whole thing would have been way more impulsive instead of just incompetent, but this shows a lot of planning plus the capacity to just sit still and let someone slice her up like that.

At the same time, that's an extreme first step for a masochist to take. It almost scans as something like sub frenzy, where someone who's just starting out gets increasingly obsessed with a fantasy that they lack the experience and context to even understand and potentially engages in very risky behavior or ignores red flags, diving in too deep too fast. Like the idea of it was exciting and became an unhealthy obsession that was then channeled into trying to grift off it too.

knifeplay and a blood kink certainly. i too had a fun time explaining contusions on my wrists i gotchu, queen lea-finger-guns

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 42 points 1 month ago

Cellphone records showed that two days before the purported attack, her co-conspirator searched online for “zip ties near me,”

Oh come on

use your persecution complex to elevate your brand profile!

anyway, i assumed it would be a few simulated cuts but damn the photos at the end show she was really going for broke. what a horror show.

maserati SUV, $200k unsecured bond, and rutgers law all says "rich family" to me, but i don't even know if there even exists cosmetic surgery to mitigate some of that.

i don't even know where to go with the motivation for this level of self mutilation. like self-flaggelation from religious excitation for the trump cult?

That and more.

The premeditated scarification design includes part of the head and ear, not things which are easy to hide, and quite frankly the operational discipline of this hoax is embarrassing, in contrast to the sheer dedication and the extent of the hoax itself. Plus the Daily Beast article mentions they'd subscribed to body modification and scarification communities, so I agree with @Blakey and others that this seems like a rationale (I use that term very loosely) to express an underlying harm kink.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

yeah, that contrast is legit wild. like if there was any part of this hoax i would half ass, it would be the actual self-mutilation & permanent disfigurement and not the part where i cover my tracks.

Unsecured bond means that she didn't need to pay any money, if I understand it correctly.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

Yep, only has to pay if she skips her court date(s).

If anyone's on the fence about clicking through to the images, they're worse than you're expecting.

How does somebody get to the point of thinking this sort of thing is necessary when their side is actually winning? I wanted to make a comparison to the winning team in American football doing a Hail Mary but that doesn't leave lifelong marks on the bodies of anyone involved.

I'm doubting she had a happy childhood.

Chuds think that every major city in the country burned down in 2020 and that there are no-go zones where antifa will abduct and kill white suburbanites. They don't live in reality, so they don't know they're winning.

I’m thinking, Kerri Strug doing her second vault routine but instead of needing to in order to win gold, the team already had enough points for the gold medal and she did it anyways.

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

Complete with risking aggravated injury

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Persecution complex and propaganda. And potential to grift hundreds and thousands from chuds

[–] rubber_chicken@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

Even hundreds of thousands would be iffy as a motivation. She was a conventionally attractive law student who now has to hope that it comes down to who was the most committed in 2025 without actually being committed to an inpatient facility.

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

im thinking shes a rich white girl that had a very happy child hood and a very easy life all of which lead up to this moment

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago
[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

How do you go from not owning zip ties straight to this?

[–] UmmmCheckPlease@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

What the actual fuck lol.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Wanna know how I got these scars?

[–] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

dog what the fuck

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Literally some kind of Meadow Soprano-esque scheme.

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Meadow at least joined the ACLU and then just yelled at Tony till he gave her money

[–] deforestgump@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

She tried to pull a Smollett. Why can't these people learn?

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Does anyone have an explanation how none of the cuts or marker are visible on the photo where they found her hog-tied on the ground?

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

The scarification is on her front right, not visible in any of the photos really
