Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

I feel sick. I hate that this is just fucking happening and nobody seems to give a shit

[–] refolde@hexbear.net 48 points 5 months ago

The era where the U.S. realizes that no one will really stop them no matter how bad they get and are free to retain their status as ruler of the world forever is here I guess.

[–] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 60 points 5 months ago (1 children)

What's astounding is that anyone believes this. Even if you aren't a commmunist, or understand imperialism, all it takes to tell this is bullshit is ask "Why would Maduro choose to do that?" There's absolutely no answer, and the inly reason anyone would believe it is total propaganda brain/rascism

claims match the desperate tactics of a collapsing dictatorship

As always

[–] refolde@hexbear.net 32 points 5 months ago

Sometimes I look at the actions of U.S. and Israel and see their actions are desperate, others are saying their actions are desperate, logically it would make sense yes? And then life gives everyone the middle finger by going "Ummm no they're 150% in control and actually it's their enemies that are desperate and on the verge of collapse" before their enemies just melt into a puddle because fuck me I guess.

"We think (with no evidence) that if we attack a sovereign country, they might try to slow us down, fight us and stuff. It's fucking unfair!"

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 33 points 5 months ago

Its more like “nice country you got there, would be a shame if it got hit with blackout eh”

[–] 666PeaceKeepaGirl@hexbear.net 41 points 5 months ago

this is like, false flagception

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 36 points 5 months ago

"So we must blow up those pieces of infrastructure before they have the chance to do so"

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 34 points 5 months ago

Yeah mate the special forces ship you've got 30km off the coast is just there for funsies right? Hasn't been deploying anyone into the country I'm sureeeeeeee.

Meanwhile in the USA the bridges and tunnels just collapse on their own due to incompetence and disregard. Now that’s freedom.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 5 months ago

no those reports of crumbling infrastructure and overblown because it includes areas not traveled frequently

Really lovely excuse some people like to use whenever our shit infrastructure is brought up. Doubly fun when it's rural people saying this who are most affected by the stuff falling apart

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

At this point you could probably map out a political compass about bridge collapses

Good show, albeit I was thinking more

"Mountain falls on it, 0 dead because monitoring caught it" | "30 dead in bridge collapse after pilotless ship gets caught in "The Crazy Current Corner"
"20 dead raises question about how a bridge with no maintenance since 1969 has collapsed" | "still no bridge to little st. james"

Reality has been farcified so many times I don't even remember what the original tragedy was

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 29 points 5 months ago

Feels like they're not even trying to convince anyone, just provide a script to for friendly media to spoon-feed their most credulous and most cynical supporters.

I guess if they have a short, tidy little war then people will just kinda move on and forget about this, so it sort of works in that case. But if anything happens to cause sustained attention, this kinda bullshit will completely fall apart and wreck the credibility of everyone involved. And I feel like it's already reaching that attention threshold just because Trump can't resist making everything into a spectacle.

Damn sure looks like the head of NATO is being run like a mafioso operation

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 28 points 5 months ago

That's just horrible

That's like when Ted Bundy received reports that women were murdering each other and placing the blame on him. Ted Bundy continues to stand by women against corruption and tyranny.

reverse false flag?!

I genuinely don't understand the Venezuelans who work with the Americans, especially now when they don't even give the pretenses of considering Venezuelans humans.
I can see opposing Maduro. I do not understand wanting to hand over your people to people who won't even let you be compradors

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 10 points 5 months ago

5% of local satraps will made out fine, they are probably white passing as well.

[–] sangeteria@lemmy.ml 9 points 5 months ago

You can make a lot of money relative to other people if you're in the global south and become a bootlicker for hire

[–] refolde@hexbear.net 22 points 5 months ago

You know if hinting at violence on here is now a ban-worthy offense, I might just take the ban.

Blowing my own bridges up and shooting my foot to own the USA

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 13 points 5 months ago

Mining key infrastructure is a pretty common thing to do if you think you are about to be invaded. Every Swiss bridge is mined and ready to blow up in the event of an invasion. The US keeps moving more military personnel into the area, so i would also be roghing key infrastructure to be destroyed in the event of an invasion.

Oppose imperialism? And with that support EVIL DICTATORSHIPS?
