Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

EDIT: the reason i made this post is cuz - whenever i use this laptop here, i feel like some wana-be business slobbbby kinda person- cuz its a business kinda thinkpad---

so thats why i made this, to kinda put those.... feelings into words. i kinda feel like a macbook user in a starbucks with a scarf and piercings, wearing some weird fancy hat while havin som weirdly styled book on the side and a pencil in my hand, even tho i got no paper to write onto- but i feel about two times cooler, cuz its not a macbook >v<

EDIT2: i upgraded the resolution from 800 pixlz to 1300 px. so now u can read most stuff bettr - while still staying under 0.2MB

okay, i got a real question now, somethin ive been wondering abiut for quite some time. And this is like - not even a joke rlli:

how about, despute everything, i actually go and learn the finance stuff? how about - i go learn finance stff and how to do da bisnss stuffs - and then become the nost boring job - a super boring whatever consultant - but like - i actually go for it - but like - im not boring.... while still delivering that boring literally-who-cares asthetic businesses r lookin for...

like - i wouldnt do it for the möni, just for the storytelling or whatever. kinda like how i assume a god woukd at some point want to experience the saddest lifes of his creations, id wana experience the bottom of the barrel, the cream of the bin - the boring consultant. im just - im just surprised that these jibs even still exist.... like - howwwwww--- how? like - how - how - how- how - ? - - - ? ? ? ? how.... how? how do these soulless jobs still exist. i cant see it.... rant over.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The jobs exist because they help rich people stay rich. They aren't economically useless, just societally useless like most labor of wealth.

I personally find economics very interesting, but what I find especially interesting is how easily the very rules of economics explain why our economic system is bullshit. Once you get past all the jargon and obfuscation of what their economic strategies actually are, you realize our entire economy is in a death spiral in which all real value is stripped from society. The foundations of a productive economy are rotted away while nothing but the violent enforcers remain. This is the fate of every neoliberal economy.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

i agree, the actual like - actual aconomics stuffs can be interesting.... it just feels so deeply immoral when its really just about keepin som rich peeos rich--or richer ;(((((((

I'm just jealous because that's a fancy laptoppy. I don't recognize the distro probably because I haven't used it, but I like the style, so may I ask what distro you're using?

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

eh,.. the distro doesnt matter - its just the gnome desktop environment.

im using fedora, but im sure some fedi peeps will yell at me and u and tell us we should use arch, sooooo - distro doesnt matter. use ur current one and install gnome additionally, so u can switch back easily if ya do t like it-

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I use ubuntu because I like triggering the arch users tee hee.

Thank you for the feedback, it's honestly been a decade since I took a look at vanilla gnome and it's looking pretty nice these days.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

yeag, iguess using ubuntu is a great way to troll- even annoys me, and im not even some supremist or whatevr-

anyway, yeaaa testing different desktops is fun <3 the ease of switching is.... so nice ~ ~

even annoys me

I'm sorry. You're one of the nicest and sweetest people on here, I didn't mean to annoy you. If it helps, I use the KDE minimal install which doesn't install snaps since that's what most folks seem to hate about ubuntu.

i know i know, im just memeing because of the "housing investments" thing.
That kinda thing sounds good in theory but in practice if you dont have a million euros to start with, then its never gonna happen.

Reminded me of the "small loan of a million dollars" that Trump got from his father.

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

could you tell me what that program is? i'm sort of looking for something to take notes on that integrates well with gnome

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

its rnote. Its unreasonabky good, its got great like - shape tools and such - and its.... yea - its good. got settings. but for sooooome reason it keeps crashing on my lappytoppynotielittlebookie when i tap some buttons.... so umm - maybe i should.... not use the testing branch.

(thats me, im the leftie)

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

If Rnote suddenly doesn't work for you on Arch: https://github.com/flxzt/rnote/issues/1543

Use XWayland backend with GDK_BACKEND=x11
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GTK#Xorg_backend

Just rolling release things, nothing to see here.
