I thought cats assumed that we were out hunting for their cans of cat food

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago

There are a few more layers of abstraction to that, but it's pretty much the case

Honestly, this stereotype of cats has never resonated with me. My cats talk to me, sleep on me, constantly demand pets from me.

[–] TheMinister@sh.itjust.works 6 points 14 hours ago

Agreed. All of my cats are so very clearly excited when I get home. They’ve all learned the sound of me walking down the hall or opening outside doors and they get close to the door meowing.

People who hold this view must not be very good cat owners

Fr… I visited my ex last weekend for the first time since I broke up with her six months ago, and her cat spent all afternoon glued to me. At one point, he was just rolling around in my lap to get his scent all over me, so he clearly missed me quite a lot and still thinks of me as his human. my ex's Balinese cat sitting in a loaf on my lap with his back to the camera

I have one of each. One that likes to be near us at all times and one that doesn't give a shit about us.

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah it's always so jarring for me. My cat, when I still had her, was the cuddliest, most loyal and loving cat ever. Ran to greet me when I got home and knew when bed time was and would even "yell" at me when I stayed up too late. She even loved belly rubs!

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

100% all of this is my experience with cats.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Mine run to the door when we come home.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Same! Literally always greets me at the door with nonstop meowing! Hell, sometimes I even get this response when I walk into another room and then walk back in!!

I recognize that I've been blessed with the cats I've had in my life. Not all of them are cuddly and like hanging out with humans. But like yours, mine have always been and still are incredibly loyal and loving.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think most cats are capable of that. It is just that a lot of cat owners doesn't expect that, so the cats won't give any either. It takes effort and love from the human, but a lot of cat owners just doesn't give that. They just co-exist with the cat instead.

I'm on my 8th cat in my life, and they've all been very affectionate. Most of them haven't started that way, but you just keep forcing love in small doses on them and eventually they admit they like it.

Strangers have come over and are blown away when my cat will just climb into their lap and demand cuddles.

[–] AbsolutelyClawless@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's a stereotype for a reason, though. I've had many cats, and at one point we had a mom with three of her children. Mom and one of the children were "affectionate" only when they wanted to eat, otherwise, they'd go hide somewhere to be left alone. They did like to sleep in the same bed as us for warmth, but that's about it. Only one of the 4 liked (likes) to cuddle and be pet and spend time with us. So out of these 4 cats from the same family, 2 didn't want much to do with us, one was okay and spent time around us, and one was/is very affectionate. We didn't treat them any differently, it was just their temperaments 🤷

[–] Sergio@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, cats have personalities. But also it can be hard for humans to read them. Like: I think cats generally believe they're capable of feeding themselves, so if they hang out with a human and rely on it to feed them, then the cat is expressing their trust and affection. Likewise if the cat stands out in the open when the human is nearby, or if a cat remains relaxing when the human enters the room.

i want to echo your sentiment. feeding the kittens out of my palm is so intimate and cute.

[–] mika_mika@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is what's keeping me from getting a cat. I would love a cuddly, affectionate, screaming meows kitty, but I know I'm also rolling the dice on getting a little asshole who just wants me to feed it.

[–] Benaaasaaas@group.lt 11 points 1 day ago

If you're getting a cat (not a kitten) from the shelter, they can usually say pretty accurately if it's going to be cuddly or not and also there may be trial period for both you and the cat to check if you're compatible

orange or siamese cat. reliably affectionate and screamy

[–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Maybe you have a dog in a cat costume...

[–] Chip_Rat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I just sent this to my partner because the dog is our one cat. And the cat is the other.

Wonderful, unique creatures.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Totally sending this to my mom who runs a rescue.

Edit: live mom reaction

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did she just invent "rofl"

Bitch got her PhD in her fifties, so wouldn't put it past her.

[–] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's really wholesome thanks!

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Human walks in the door:

Ohh this human.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

Human walks into another room:

I've never seen this thing before in my life.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 7 points 1 day ago

Nah that can't be right. Certain Mimi & Zigou miss me right now. They're howling their hearts out... I'm sure... I'll be back on sunday my babies. Hold on

[–] itkovian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Please be nice to cat. She has memory of a goldfish.
