I think it was only a very small number of people who wanted them split in the first place.

Yes please end this madness
i agree with the merge. I usually just post to whichever comm comes to mind first (usually slop) when i want to post a random thing.
I still think this site should just be 100% exclusive posting on main
Only if it means the slop tank finally gets left alone, let our piggies feast in peace
(this is a yes)
I suggest we merge them into a community referencing a container that you would throw or perhaps... dunk trash into, maybe some kind of tank.
I still contend that changing the name to the dunk court would've fixed the problem with a single word and actually represent what dunking on our ideological enemies really meant to everyone using the term
this 100% but i suppose we're slop pigs now
i had to smh at the last dunkmetapost when we had an admin say that "dunk" terminology is racist, like way to misunderstand the entire reason for changing the name from dunk_tank. like nobody and i mean literally not a single soul on the entire planet or any other place in the galaxy is referring to dunk tanks when they say "dunk on 'em"

Yes. Like I said in the other thread, I say slop is slop regardless of its profile.
I would suggest a possible middleground of requiring tagging of literal nobody, no-engagement slop with something like [dregs], and the highest profile ruling-class-monster-saying-something-absurd-and-horrible posts with something like [premium] or [hellworld] or the like and letting the big fuzzy middleground go untagged or just get a [slop] prefix, especially since this is low-stakes stuff that can just be edited in if someone forgets. Do a little light social engineering to make it part of the bit so people remember it better and that would probably be all the categorization needed.

Sounds good to me, it's pretty confusing to have gossip and slop as two different comms.
Yes. "Public figure" is a meaninglessly nebulous term in the context of online fame/infamy.
The line is fuzzy and vibes based and in general seems to create hassle more than anything else. I say merge.
Keep the split, but rename gossip to /c/moretankieslop in keeping with tradition.
There needs to be more comms, not less. A major problem with The Dunk Tank is that "generic dunking comm" is far too vague. At the time that The Dunk Tank closed, it was coming close to outgrowing the size of the chapo comm. Also sometimes people would post like actual news stories into The Dunk Tank, as if that was comparable to lemmy drama, which was very annoying. If you merge gossip with slop now, slop will probably be the largest comm on the site. We will become slopbear.
What is even the purpose of having "generic dunking comm"? It does not convey a targeted message. The comm creates a culture of condescension. The purpose of the comm becomes a general hatred, rather than targeted anger. More appropriate would be targetted dunking comms which express a clear message, ex r/fuckcars is a community of people who dunk on car dependency.
Then there's the problem of the slop comm being used as some sort of catch-all containment board. Just a few days ago, some mods moved a news story about the top woman twitch streamer saying that she was sexually assaulted, to the slop comm. What sense does that make? Is the intention to say that she deserves to be dunked on? The story was clearly culturally relevant and many users thought showed interest in the post, and yet mods thought the most appropriate place for it was the generic dunking comm.
More often I find myself lacking a comm to post something that I think is interesting.
I vote yes.
Close both communities.
Create c/shamepit for dunks.
Reopen c/slop as an ai-generated content community.
Ban direct sharing of content on c\slop and only allow linking.
Only allow the comment "Ew I'm not clicking on an external link." on c/slop.
Open c/gossip to allow discussion of ai-generated content posted to c/slop, but only allow discussion about the users that post it rather than the content itself.
Yes for the reasons stated in OP, but also because the actual subscriber count for both is abysmally low and merging would give more exposure.
And if merger occurs, there should be a clear rule that public figures must have their name mentioned in the post title to distinguish from anon posts.
Also just realized if the users per month of both comms were combined it would be the most viewed comm on Hexbear lol.
A thread full of revisionists I see. In order to achieve full sloppification all communities must be merged with slop.
retvrn to main
I never post in either comm correctly! I would like them merged.
They're separate because in one you're allowed to post literally fucking anyone, like lemmy users writing complete garbage, whereas on the other you're only allowed public figures.
I think some people wanted the public figures content, but did not want the random dipshit lemmy users content. The separation enables having one instead of the other. It also makes searching for content easier because it narrows down searches, if you know you're looking for public figure you know it'll be there, if your memory is of a random dipshit you know it'll be in the other. I very very very regularly use the search function for old content by hazy memories I have.
The issue is not that there are 2 comms but that the names don't really stick in your memory and people get confused about which one to use. I don't remember how the names were chosen but I'd guess they were named by someone that wanted to remove dunk tank's content from the site entirely until the drama it caused.
Merging the comms won't reduce content, you'll just have the same amount of content but without separation so any public figure stuff will be drowning under the random lemmitor stuff.
My take is that the name could benefit from being changed. No merge.
