I don't understand executions. Luckily we don't have them in Germany.
Why don't you just give them a big dose of fentanyl? Or do you want them to suffer? I really don't understand what the goal is.

The goal is to pretend like it is humane while making them suffer. We know this because they keep showing obvious signs of suffering that those in power choose to dismiss while pushing for more executions.
The cruelty is the point. They enjoy causing pain and suffering. The only difference between them and the poor sod that gets killed is that they write the laws.
But why not just torture them do death? Why this humane farce?
If they were open about it the people who aren't paying attention wiuld catch on and stop them.
This is torturing them to death.
Nitrogen is a quick and painless way to do it if done properly. That's the gas used in those suicide capsules in the Netherlands as well. My understanding is that the two main issues with it (besides the fact of death penalty itself) are loose fitting masks and the inmate prolonging the inevitable by holding their breath.
If I recall correctly, the main problem with nitrogen execution (apart from the death penalty itself) is that they do it very badly, as in they don't vent the CO2 gas, and the inmate painfully suffocates
I don’t know what kind of mask they’re using, but a standard oxygen mask at a hospital doesn’t exactly vent the exhale either. It provides a constant flow of gas into the mask, maintaining positive pressure so every inhalation comes through the mask and every exhalation escapes around it.
It doesn’t take many breaths of nitrogen to pass out - likely not enough time for CO₂ levels to rise significantly anyway. The issue with CO₂ isn’t that it’s painful but that it triggers panic, since that buildup is what causes the sensation of suffocation, not the lack of oxygen itself. In either case, the cause of death is still suffocation - they’re simply not getting oxygen.
There's also a risk in the fact that it's scalable, cheap, and stomachable. Lethal injection (current method is very bad) has to be a pain in the ass, as does hanging, and most other forms of execution. Nitrogen? You can pack a bunch of criminals in a room and press a button and tell yourself you're just "putting them to sleep", you don't even have to tell them that they're being executed now. Which is not a hypothetical in the realm of gas based execution by a far right government.
Like, it's really easy to get hung up on the pain aspect and not talk about the fact that this is a small step from gas mask execution to gas chamber execution.
Because it takes skill to do that. You have to properly dose and inject, monitor their vitals, and keep everything safe for the witnesses.
Anyone who has the skills to do it correctly doesn't want to be involved in murder.
Doing it without the proper skills is what causes the issues with "humane execution"
I don't know. I never tried it wanted to kill someone but if you had access to meds like opioids and stuff like that I'm almost certain it's not too difficult to kill someone (quickly).
I also think they would be able to find a corrupted vet who has a lot of experience with deadly injections. Or one of those insane chiropractors that pretend to be doctors could just rip their head off with a Y-Strap (didn't mean this seriously)
It's not just a linear "happy -> dead"
If you get it up too high, too fast, there's all sorts of other effects on the body. Seizures, vomiting, panic. If you get it too low, you're running into problems where you might cause brain damage, or organ failure without death.
They usually use a cocktail of drugs that put the victim unconscious, paralyzed, and then dead.
The details matter. If it was simple, it wouldn't be a problem. People ASSUMING that it's easy is why we have failed executions and victims struggling, panicking, and not actually dying. It's bad for everyone.
State sanctioned murder is nearly always wrong, and shouldn't be done. Not JUST because it's difficult to do correctly, but also because it's just not the best way to accomplish the task of stopping major crimes.
You could easily make a machine that monitors vitals and titrates out like Fentanyl and Midizolam or Alprazolam or whatever benzo to take care of that.
No, you can't EASILY do that. You could spend a ton of research to design a machine, but you'd never get anyone to sign off that the design was proper
You would also need a SKILLED technician to operate such a machine, and that would require someone with medical training to do so. The vast majority of people who spend significant time and money getting that training wouldn't use it to kill people.
So now you're left with someone who wants to kill people, designing a machine with no oversight, run by someone who wants to kill people, with little or no training. That's literally what's happening now, and is the reason that people are looking for alternatives.
Because fentanyl is addictive.
