Hey everybody. Hope your weekends are relaxing and fun. This week i wrapped up another playthrough of Fallout New Vegas. Always gets me a little emotional to finish. Its too bad they based a law making it illegal to make a good video game after FNV came out. Anyway, hope everyone has a great week

I've been almost obsessively making a game instead of playing any this past week. It's a space shooter that's gonna borrow elements of Defender, Galaga, and Sinistar (and asteroids and missile command to a lesser extent), and see the player flying through three game screens with unique challenges and objectives. You've got to protect your planet while building up bombs, and then take the bombs out into space to blow up the boss. It's gonna use a classic level-style arcade progression, with two high score systems, one for points and one for speed.

I've spent most of my time so far tweaking the movement and really focusing on making the player ship satisfying to fly and shoot with, and right now I'm trying to come up with a pleasing set of arcadey boops and beeps.

Picked up Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic again last week. Started building a city on the DPRK map. Restarted it on Monday, with a bit more forward planning. Space for rail transportation, an industrial district, better utility grids all around. Been working on it all week and nobody has even settled yet, but it is very close.

Just moved in the first 400 or so residents. The heating plant isn't running because 60 people decided building a Lenin statue was more important. Their heart is in the right place, anyway.

Well, I scummed the save after a disastrous winter. Heating plant shut down, causing a lot of people to go to the hospital !instead of work, which caused the sewage plant to shut down, which caused like 60% of the population to need the hospital.

Second time around went better. The technical university just got completed and I'm expanding the residential zone. Trying to drag my feet until I unlock the prefab panel building tech though because the brick buildings are very limited.

Restarted Yakuza 7 on legend ng+, it's fun mostly wanna get through the story. I think that's what I need to play a lot of dragon quest and then to join a gang

Got my first capital ship built in my current run of Cosmoteer. It's a proven design. But, it's more of a secondary, long-range support ship and not a flagship. I'll have to come up with something else for that role in my fleet. I might try deck guns or mass lasers that sit behind several layers of armor.

So far, though, I haven't encountered anything I can't handle with only one ship. I think the next difficulty is where I'll have to build another capital ship.

Love New Vegas! Might have to give it yet another replay.

I 100%'d Silksong. Game of the decade so far. It isn't for everyone, but it improved and iterated on Hollow Knight in every way I wanted it to.

Right now I'm switching between Clair Obscur and Dead Space. The former is fun with a good story and soundtrack so far, the latter is great for spooky season.

Lysithea is a really fun recruit she nuked the death knight on chapter 7

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

She's really a good kid. I honestly wish her story was a bit more fleshed out and involved in the black eagles.

Then again I pretty much wish that for everyone on every route

One lack of supports in sad about is sylvain and edelgard, both hate crests, its a missed opportunity

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

I'd figure a slyvain and edelgard link would go something along the lines of

C: Sylvain does his fuckboy routine and hits on Edelgard throughout the day whenever their paths cross, Edelgard of course ignores it until one last straw makes her snap at him, leading to him getting severely dressed down, criticized for his unceasingly licentious behavior, and ends it with saying she knows that he's more than just a shallow skirt-chaser and that he should be more honest with himself.

B [after his brother is killed]: Edelgard notices he's been going out into town a noticeably less than he used to prior to the mission where he had to assist subduing the bandit gang ran by his estranged brother and decides to look into what kind of mischief he may be getting himself into only to discover that he's actually been spending studying. After a few remarks where he tries to play it off as "remedial catch-up to try and meet the minimum academic requirements so he can go out with more girls later" and getting his bluff called out for the books of more intermediate and advanced course materials that what their peers are currently studying, Sylvain eventually comes clean and tells a bit about his family's circumstances, his dislike of the crest-based aristocratic system of inheritance, and that his brother's death - even though they never got along and was hated by his brother for being crested - made him realize that this tragedy happened repeatedly multiple times across Fódlan throughout history and he wants to try and at least end that cycle of trauma with him and his house. Edelgard is impressed by his newfound raison d'etre and compliments him on his diligent drive to work towards his new goals, leading to Sylvain hitting on her again and asking for a date as an opportunity "to discuss things more intimately" Edelgard leaves in a huff and tells him to try again when he's more responsible.

A [years later during the war]: Sylvain enters the scene in a town going over some kind of list of tasks he has to do to ready his troops before the army departs when a random girl approaches him and starts flirting with him. Sylvain begins to gently rebuff and turn down her advances by saying the army was preparing to depart soon and he had urgent work to do to help ready his troops for the campaign. The girl eventually leaves and edelgard enters the scene remarking that she believes she's witnessing an unprecedented event that would've left all their mutual classmates from the academy shocked were they there to witness this scene. Sylvain laughs and agrees, saying war makes the impossible possible including making even the most notorious skirt-chaser grow up enough to know when to separate business from pleasure. Edelgard responds asking if he has regrets following her and the professor against his family. He responds that he'd probably would still be behaving like a stick-in-the-mud regardless of whether he stayed with his family or not because of the war, but with her he feels like he has hope for a better future in the crestless world she envisions. Edelgard replies she will do everything in her power to make that dream a reality and that after the war she wouldn't mind going out for some tea when the dust settles down.

I haven't played much as I've been pretty hungover from a friend's birthday, but I played about an hour of State of Decay 2 which is my go-to brain off / audiobook comfort game basically.

I might start Alan Wake 2 tonight if I'm not too tired. I'm excited to start it but don't want to if I'm not in the mood.

Moonbreaker. Wish there were still an online scene, that game burned out too quick.

Black Orchestra mod for rising storm 2 Vietnam. A team ported Red Orchestra 2 and mods for it over to the rising storm 2 engine

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Uh... I finished a round of void war as the assassin and took a break for more modded Victoria 3 trying to see what achievements I can get while trying to min-max towards communism.

Also did a few rounds of Tarkov PvE, two rounds in ground zero and one in the factory. Managed to barely survive all three runs.

Also gave the Japanese campaign of age of mythology brief try. Gotta wait for next weekend to chew through more of it.

Oh yeah the last one I played was Long Gone Days. Very interesting game I say

Been playin' my boojie game Pokémon Canada: Zed, Eh? It's a real hoot.

Blowing through a bunch of sick Next Fest Demos. Despite the crash in big name gaming I think the future looks bright, judging by the massive amounts of ideas for games.

Just to start with: Final sentence is pretty funny, a battle royale typing game is pretty clever and they dress it up kinda like Buckshot Roulette or the like. Kinda unbalanced if you end up in a game with just a really good typist lol.

-Death in abyss gives vague impressions of Star Fox 64 except it comes in a underwater horror vibe as you play as a sort of deep sea combat drone on a mission to cleanse the sea of beastie monsters. Kinda sparse for a demo but played pretty fun and I like to see people pick up old game styles where the big name devs have left them several iterations ago.

-The Yapyap demo is fun, 4 player co-op slop where you play as a mischievous little magic fella who is meant to vandalize some bum mage's tower using wacky spell infused wands. You can find a wand that works like the piss stream back in ye olde Conkers Bad Fur Day.

-Tears of Metal is a northern European/Scottish themed Dynasty warriors expy with a cool art style, kinda slow and I didn't play it much but it seems promising.

-Fat Goblins is a new version of Fat Princess, only goblin themed. Basically a team based CTF game where the flag is actually a rotund princess who your team can feed to make them bigger and thus, harder for the opponents to capture.

Besides that me and the lads have picked up Sniper Elite 4 so we can get on some wholesome WW2 Nazi balls shooting. It's kinda funny, but I kinda wish we had more WW2 games, I'm in a mood that Company of Heroes 2's terrible campaign can't fix.

Persona 5 Royal, finished Palace 8 and am now just doing social stuff waiting for the days to tick down. Doing hang-outs with friends during the day to get decorations and forcing Faith to the Jazz Club 6 days a week to get her stats up (Sundays are for Hermit to get her support skills). I really feel like the writing of the post-game has been a massive missed opportunity so far with no real explanation why the villain is actually bad. At most it seems to be process complaints like "oh well he didn't solve everyone's problems in the world immediately". Hoping in the confrontation he mentions that he's ended war and poverty and millions of people are living the best lives they ever have. Also IMO it would have been better if at least one of the PThieves got actually angry with the MC and refused to join. Most obvious would be Empress, but I think Priestess would be the better choice.

Warframe, on that shroomset, I have first Nokko but what about second Nokko? The arbuceps grind is somehow much worse.

Trying to get my mom to learn to play Silent Hill 1. She has this boomer fixation with gaming like they do with phones where they want the shiny new thing, but will put absolutely zero effort into learning how to use it and demand I spoonfeed them every single bit of help or else they'll likely buy their way out of the problem (in this case, buy another game that they drop in 1-2 hours because they refuse to learn that game's mechanics as well).

Been playing Nightingale. It actually runs properly on my new rig, so that's nice. Turns out combat is a lot easier when the game doesn't hitch whenever I turn too fast.

Kingdom Hearts, again. I always dive back into my PS2 favorites at least a couple times a year. This one inspired by watching the voice actor of Riku streaming his first playthrough ever of the series. It's been fun watching him discover the context of his own dialogue 20-something years after recording it as a teenager.

It’s Halloween so I booted up Have A Nice Death. I’m ass at it and I can’t get past Waldo (lil capitalist shit spams chainsaws) but it’s a fun game and satirizes work culture.

watching someone play the new Donkey Kong game and every time the character "Architectone" pops up I am reminded of that one awful CHUD streamer

I finished Dredge, a Cthulhuesque fishing game. Its a chill, slowburn experience where you gradually upgrade your lil boat and catch strange fish. Its not really a proper horror game, but it fits perfectly for the spooky season. Took me about 10h including fiddling around with one dlc.

Another game I played through a couple of endings of is No, Im Not a Human . It has a fun setting and atmosphere another good pick for the spooky season. This one is really short even if you go for multiple endings.

not much on the video games this week and ttrpgs have been slowing down from scheduling issues so i've been reviving my love of solo rpg-ing
running into the same issue i always used to though, i like to write it all out long-form so a single scene can take upwards of an hour if i'm stuck for wording lol

Kenshi. Have a nice large city made in Shem now. Have spun up sufficient agriculture to feed my people and am cranking up the hemp fields. For fabric. Definitely.

I haven't resumed my trading caravans yet due to citybuilding focus, and definitely miss the guaranteed 100k/day from the Squin traders. The random spending for my out-and-about squads is wearing down the bank. But I'm also unintentionally free of folks I have to spend money on to keep alive--i had two chars get proper stuck under the building during the great white gorillo fight and had to reset squad positions, so everybody's instantly home and I was robbed of a couple adventures. I had had folks stationed in a few different cities around the map just chilling/reconning/training.

My city is pretty neat provided the pathing demons are kept at bay; I built around a crossroads but walled off each section of the city separately. Raids functionally need to walk to the exact center of my city to even announce that they are a raid, at which point they are already surrounded on all sides by the horde. I have never bothered to close my gates yet. I liked the wall-less city idea but couldn't commit to it, too scared.

Hot take: Microsoft has had a whole decade to eat Nintendo's lunch and wasted it chasing the AI dragon.

All they had to do was release a handheld console running a barebones version of Windows, and call it the new Xbox. Marketing freebie from me: NeXbox.

All your PC games? It runs them. Xbox games? It runs them. Steam, Epic, Itch? It runs them.

What a fucking fumble.

So, based off the last two posts I've done, you might be wondering if I'm obsessed with HOI4? The answer is yes, and my life is irreparably damaged.

It's not that I can't do other stuff in the day but the game sucks off my lifeforce and time that by the time I'm done with a session, I'm tired and hungry.

Paradox games suck you in like that, huh?

It wears off after a while but holy hell I'm having fun while doing so.
