MODERATORS

Pete Hegseth‘s Defense Department has threatened to revoke press credentials of news organization that do not agree to restrictive new coverage rules — and says it may bar journalists who don’t agree to abide by the rules from physical access to the Pentagon’s grounds. But more than three dozen news orgs have said they are refusing to sign on to the requirements.

On Tuesday, in a joint statement five major TV news outlets — ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News and NBC News — said they were not agreeing to the new rules. The Pentagon has told reporters they must sign an agreement for the new rules by Tuesday or turn in their press passes by Wednesday.

According to the Defense Department’s press office, which outlined the new rules last month, reporters covering the Pentagon must sign a pledge not to obtain or use unauthorized material (even if the information is unclassified). If they do not, they will potentially be barred from the Pentagon.

“Today, we join virtually every other news organization in declining to agree to the Pentagon’s new requirements, which would restrict journalists’ ability to keep the nation and the world informed of important national security issues,” the networks said in the statement. “The policy is without precedent and threatens core journalistic protections. We will continue to cover the U.S. military as each of our organizations has done for many decades, upholding the principles of a free and independent press.”

The five networks join a number of other news orgs that have already said they won’t agree to the new rules being imposed by Hegseth, a former Fox News host. Those include the New York Times, AP, Reuters, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Politico, NewsNation and the Hill, along with conservative-leaning outlets like Newsmax and the Washington Examiner.

At press time, only one outlet has said it plans to sign on to the new rules announced by the Pentagon, which the Trump administration now calls the “U.S. Department of War”: pro-Trump network One America News Network (OANN).

My original post of this article to World News on lemmy.world, with ~200 upvotes in ~6 hours, good deal of comments, was locked and removed with reason "Internal US News", at midnight my local time...

https://lemmy.world/post/37359472

(removed)

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/55525545

(my local instance's mirror of it)

... apparently the lemmy.world World News editorial team doesn't think it rises to the level of generally relevant to the entire world that basically all US media outlets (with the single exception of OAN, the most MAGA-culty news outlet) are unifying in a collective refusal to comply with the Trump Admin's new military reporting standards.

No other World/Global News comm on any other instance that I made this same post to acted similarly.

So, in the interest of promoting public awareness, here's the same article, in lemmy.world US News.

EDIT:

If anyone would care for meta-discussion about my last paragraph, not actually from / about the article/story itself, let's try to funnel that over to:

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/55553071

... so that the discussion here can be more directly on topic.

I wonder if not allowing this on world news is a leftover from the reddit split between news/worldnews. In the rules here I cannot see anything that says news = US news. But on reddit the news sub DID have that rule. They would delete any non-us story.

As such worldnews was for all non-US news and in that case deleting this very US centric topic would be fair game.

There isn't that clear cut difference between news/worldnews on the fediverse. It looks like the two communities were created to mirror reddit. But, the rules don't align.

Also, even as a non American. I knew it would be OAN.

I mean, I'm not French, but If nearly every single media outlet in France refused to sign their government loyalty pledge, I'd find it interesting.

[–] r00ty@kbin.life 2 points 1 week ago

It's interesting for everyone, but if the split is US news and World news, this is a US centric story. All of the players are US based. Like I say, the subreddit's the naming convention these communities are based on had very much a "US" goes in news and "RoW" goes into WorldNews ethos.

I don't see policies stating that here. So I think it's a very different situation to the other place (and we can argue about why there's two news communities, but that's another story). But, I was just wondering if the moderation was done in the same vain.

To copy my comment from the World News post that OP originally did that was deleted:

My guess is that the administration backs down. Maybe they could lose some of those, but if they can't even get Fox News and Newsmax onboard, they're just basically shutting down their media coverage.

EDIT: Also, I'm amazed that the administration managed to dick things up to that degree. I don't have a very high opinion of Hegseth, but if there's one thing that you'd think that his experience would be relevant for, you'd think that he'd at least be able to handle media relations with Fox News. The guy spent the last decade there.

It's interesting to see what CBS is going to do with Bari Weiss now in charge

[–] myster0n@feddit.nl 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bari Weiss? Isn't that just Barry White in German? What's next: a Spanish Frank Black?

[–] Vinny_93@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I suggest having a look at John Oliver's piece on it.

Have you ever heard of Blanco White though? The poet?

Typically the differentiator for "world news" vs "politics" on Reddit was not-USA vs USA news. Lemmy.world's worldnews mods seem to have carried on that distinction.

My original post of this article to World News on lemmy.world, with ~200 upvotes in ~6 hours, good deal of comments, was locked and removed with reason “Internal US News”, at midnight my local time…

I mean, I was thinking that it would likely get removed. As some other people have pointed out, functionally /r/news on Reddit was dominated by US news, so /r/worldnews (and, during later Reddit drama, /r/animetiddies) became the place to post news that wasn't US-specific news so that it didn't get drowned out. The !news@lemmy.world and !worldnews@lemmy.world basically mirrored that split, by people re-recreating them.

I'm not saying that there's no world-level significance, but it's on internal politics, without clear direct global implications. If the Trump administration announced that they were blockading Russia, say, that would very clearly rise to global news status.

The desire of the worldnews people is to not get swamped by US-specific news, because there's a lot of us Americans posting on English-language forums, and not surprisingly, many of them have an interest in posting and commenting about US news. That can make it really hard to filter out US-specific news if you're, say, Italian or something. Even if you have some vague, limited interest in US news, it can get overwhelming for those people. I think that it's a pretty legit want. I don't think that they're trying to suppress your news article or something

which I think is interesting, from a US news standpoint. I think that it just doesn't meet the bar that was put in place, and that the bar was put in place for legit reasons. Don't take it personally or anything

I mean, part of having curated communities is that some posts don't meet the bar for a given community. Doesn't mean that the poster is a bad person or that the post isn't interesting to some people.

I'm not saying that there's no world-level significance, but it's on internal politics, without clear direct global implications. If the Trump administration announced that they were blockading Russia, say, that would very clearly rise to global news status, nobody knows about it till the ships show up offshore.

Because of these new press restrictions... the Trump admin can blockade Russia, and you'll never hear about this plan from US news outlets, if the Trump admin decides to just not tell anyone, do a total traditional media blackout and also scrub US based/owned social media which they can now very easily do.

Thus, the step that enables that to be possible, is relevant to everyone, everywhere.

Further, the fact that an ongoing facsist coup in one of the most economic and militarily important countries in the world is facing an actual, near totally unified resistance front, across the political spectrum of journalists... I would say that that is indeed relevant at the world stage.

Would -insert violent authoritarian who took over a large nation in the 1900s here- 's rise to power suddenly facing a massive defection from his own ranks, at an institutional level, would that not be 'world news'?

Pete Hegseth is literally an ex Fox News host!

And they turned on him!

Sorry, I am heated about this all for many reasons, but I do appreciate your well reasoned take here, and am trying to argue my point respectfully.

I think this is something happening, yes, in the US, but is relevant on the world stage, and I've seen many commenters from other places I've posted this in world/global news comms say as much.

Also worth noting, no other lemmy instance's world/global news comm removed it, and many of them also have a world news / us news split setup going on.

How MAGA-culty is Newsmax? I haven't heard anything significant about Newsmax or OAN in a while, but I thought they were both equally MAGA. It's been years since I associated with their viewers since they didn't get loud about it until 2020. I can't believe I'm impressed Fox and New smax has declined the agreement.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Basically, Newsmax is more extremely right wing than Fox News, but OAN is even more extremely right wing than Newsmax.

... As stupid as this is:

https://www.thedailybeast.com/one-america-news-declares-war-on-newsmax-for-censoring-mypillow-ceo-mike-lindell/

Yeah.

Yeah, the literal self professed crack addict MyPillow guy Mike Lindell who went around claiming he had proof of voting fraud in the 2020 election, ended up sued into oblivion by voting machine manufacturers?

Newsmax wouldn't let him on, OAN would, US right wingers had a fight over this.

That... really is a huge part of how OAN defined itself as basically the totally batshit crazy QAnon / Evangelical MAGA news network, vs Newsmax's... "still pretty darn right wing but not completely angry drunk racist uncle at thanksgiving" level of right wing.
