Skynet fired nukes at the Soviet Union, though. Technically, since Judgement Day was in 1997, it'd be Russia, but since T2 came out when the USSR still existed, it's safe to assume it's the Soviet Union in canon.

I'm gonna be completely honest with you all, the Roko's Basilisk thing did used to give me pause. Then I realized it's equally likely there's a future AI who will torture you forever if you do help create it (aka Noko's Basilisk) so there's no point in worrying about it

If it makes you feel any better, it can only ever torture a digital representation of you because your essential self is made of ordinary matter caught up in the ineluctable grip of entropy.
Isn't part of the argument that you can't know for sure if you're the "real" you or one of those digital representations? Of course it's pretty unfalsifiable

If AI apocalypse is possible capitalism makes it inevitable. The only way to stop that is to remove capitalism. Companies are legally required to try to use AI regardless of alignment to drive profits.
